What can we do to save PC gaming?

man what's that smell.

where is this supposed demise of PC fps games.

When every major FPS developer on the PC is porting their games to X360 (simultaneous release becoming the norm), and the X360 version usually matches or outsells the PC version, I don't think it's much of a stretch to say the PC dominance in the genre is on the wane commercially and in terms of actual numbers of players.

So other than CoD4 and Vegas, what are these great microsoft FPS games you speak of?

There is a game called Halo, you may know it, I've heard it's quite popular. Resistance on the PS3 ain't bad either.

Yeah, but there aren't that many out on the Wii yet though.

Who cares, apart from Nintendo evangelists.

Or £175 for the Core.

So what are these hidden costs? XBL subscription presumably?

Look, you don't just buy that, do you? Rechargeable batteries, Play and Charge, the wifi adaptor, more pads etc.

None of these are required but it's not hard to see how someone will clock up some fairly substantial bills, is it?

Well I expect many people do just buy that, what you get in the box even with the Core is enough to let you play just about any game, but that aside, the PC has got enough going for it without trying to convince anyone that it's a cheap gaming platform. I don't mind mind having to play a game on low settings but I do expect to run it at a stable framerate and at at the native res of my screen.

As for PC gaming being in decline (or even dying) Steam alone has totally reinvigorated the platform, and then you've still got the RTS / simulator / indie / MMO / twitch FPS genres which are still much better on the PC than what you can get on the consoles.

doesnt the core come with a wired pad? negating the need for batteries.

Wi Fi adaptor I actually dont know anybody (apart from myself) who has that.

any more hidden costs?

to be honest its not the price of consoles that makes them better value its the length of time that they will provide you with gaming goodness.

I was just citing examples, I'm not here to prove someone else's point. I imagine they've sold more than 1 wifi adaptor, though.

Of course but I dont think it counts as a hidden cost in the same way as batteries do.

personally I stick to console gaming cos its just a lot less hassle. The last pc game I bought was San Andreas and I sold it after a day as I couldnt get my joypad working properly on it.

got the xbox version put the disc in and a couple of minutes later I was playing.

Doom was by no means the state of the art of 3D graphics when it came out, no one would dispute that.

But it was Doom that showed PC and console developers that making fast 3D action games wasn't the preserve of coinop developers with thousands of pounds worth of custom hardware at their disposal.

Doom. Released December 1993.

Starfox. Released February 1993.

And your point was again?

That HDTV which makes your games actually look like they were made within the past year (and the comfy couch)

HDTV I bought my 360 in december 05 and I still havent bought a hdtv. So not really a hidden cost although a shitload of people did get hdtvs just for the 360.

Not sure too many people bought a new sofa for it though :)

I'm sure valve would disagree, being the biggest FPS developer on the PC market. I don't disagree that PC companies are doing dual development, but to say its the demise of the PC FPS is silly.

Well you don't need a Spangly 300 quid graphics card for your PC either.

Man this has got waaaay off topic.
