I'm going to Atomic Burger on Friday actually (and again on Saturday for breakfast, natch). Any recommendations?

I'm liking these in theory:

Dead Elvis

Swiss cheese, American cheese, bacon & onions

James Earl Jones (V)

Cajun rubbed burger, blue cheese dressing & onions

The Chuck Norris

BBQ pulled pork, American cheese & onions

Naturally for breakfast the following morning I will be having this:

Judd Nelson Breakfast Burger

Sausage burger patty, bacon, fried egg American cheese, homefries and two buttermilk pancakes as the bun

My favourite at present is the Frito Bandito and Mrs Oli is crazy about the Cheech and Chong (she claims the chili is amazing). I've tried the Chuck Norris and the James Earl Jones both were good but Chuck edges it for me (though I'd be tempted to add bacon because I bloody love meat)

I was in California this weekend so decided to check out In-N-Out burger after hearing all about it.

Went for the 'Double-Double' :

It's your standard Cheeseburger, the double-double meaning double meat and double cheese. Tasted pretty good, very fresh, they are made to order so there is a bit of a wait. Probably the best fast-food burger I have had here, beats McDonalds/BK/Wendys by miles, but not the best burger ever by a long long way.

Hated the fries.

7/10

So jealous.

What was wrong about the fries? They look a bit pale to me (I hear you can ask for them to be cooked longer so they're more golden).

I had an in-N-out burger in LA back in March and after the amount everyone had gone on about how amazing it was I really disappointed. It was a totally average take away burger, yeah it tasted fresher than most but still - top ten burgers on the guardian website? Fuck off! I know what you mean about the fries, there was something weird about them. My conclusion was the type of potatoes that they used were quite acidic so tasted a bit odd as fries!

We did a little bit of a burger tour of the US (unintentional but AWESOME!) The best ones we had were at a place called Fatburger in Las Vegas, they take a ball of meat and squish it down on the griddle with a plate to give it a really good colour. The main nice thing about it was that it was seasoned really really well. We had another sweet burger in a weird secret burger joint behind a curtain inside Le Parker Meridien hotel in New York. The staff were grumpy as hell but the burger was a good'un :)

Well Atomic Burger was excellent. I had a Cheech & Chong with American cheese. Also ordered were a Daisy Duke, Chuck Norris and Belushi Bolognese burger.

Breakfast was also great, especially the homefries that came with the Judd Nelson.

It was pretty tasty but I think I'm going to give it another go tonight with a few changes.

I was using decent sized burgers so I cut them in half to give a thinner patty, I'm going to leave it in one piece tonight, the extra cooking time should help the bun steam for longer. I'm going to add a little paprika and garlic to the onions, slightly less cheese and crispier bacon with all the fat cut off. I'll probably omit the super hot sauce in favour of something a bit milder too.

Cooking it on the onions was good though, if I'm not BBQing this is the way to go for burgers I think.

I was going to mention the bacon fat, but it's a minor consideration with such an impressive monolith.

What sort of roll did you use? I favour a very soft white bap for this sort of burger. As mentioned on the previous page, Warburtons sandwich rolls are ideal.

I didn't think to take it off, it was a bit of a rush making the burger, milkshakes and a vegetarian option all to be ready at the same time. I realised at the last minute I had no tin foil to wrap the burger in so just threw the bacon on as it was and started munching ( after I took a photo, of course )

The buns were plain soft white rolls, I picked them up based on your earlier posts, they could very well have been warburtons.

How are you cooking it, I find even with a decent amount of fat just grilling it sorts that out. Crispy bacon heaven waiting for it's beefy bride, right there.

I rarely use the grill for anything, I just threw it in a dry pan for a few moments. I'll probably cut off the fat and get the foreman out tonight.

Cool. The roll looked a bit like a crusty one in the photo at first, but looking again it looks soft and delightful.

Smoked bacon?

Of course.

The roll could have done with more steaming, it was starting to go a bit dry. I had the same rolls for my sandwiches at lunch time and the difference between plain / steamed is ridiculous.

Cutting off bacon fat is about as morally defensible as cutting up kittens.

I have no need for bacon fat or kittens.

Ah yes. Warburtons Sandwich rolls, only discovered them recently having been disappointed with nearly every shop-bought bun ever. I steamed them in the frying pan with the lid on, Slider style, just to warm them through. Absolutely perfect for this sort of burger, I'll never buy anything else again.

Thanks for posting this, found some of these rolls in my local Tesco's, and tried the whole onion steaming slider thing, and it was excellent. Definitely the best burgers I've ever made at home, you have made me a happy man :)

Warburton's are great, glad to hear there are fans in here.

Wish we could get Martin's potato rolls in this country, though. They use them at Shake Shack in New York, most prominently, and are ridiculously good. Buttery, soft and slightly sweet. A Hamburger Today are big fans: http://aht.seriouseats.com/archives/2011/04/the-burger-lab-whats-the-best-bun-for-my-burger-taste-test.html

Had a chilli burger from Wannaburger in Edinburgh at the weekend during a last snatch of Fringe. It ain't fine dining but they do know how to burn some cow and smother it in the right amount of whatever shit you asked for then wrap to bits of tasty bread around it.
