Female Vocalists and Artists

Recommended Posts

Nellie McKay; not for everyone's taste, but definitely a damn good singer. As The Independent said: like a cross between Vera Lynn and Eminem. And a fantastic sound from the New York underground.

Brandi Carlile

Awesome voice.

Really?

Sounds like she's straining at times to me (and not just at the more hoarse moments), I find it a bit grating.

Crucially though, and most damning, I found the song reminiscent of Coldplay's Yellow.

Really?! I just love how raw yet controlled her voice sounds. Her other songs aren't quite as strenuous. I recommend

Horses for courses I suppose but that's what it sounds like to me, I like pushed voices but that (to me) sounds like she's trying to do something that's just a bit too far out of her comfortable range. I thought the video looked quite nice though

Brooke Waggoner

She has a silly name but makes amazing sounds with her mouth and hands. Free EP for download at her site, too. Excellent orchestral/piano pop stuff.

Thanks for that! Just checked out her free EP and thought it was really rather lovely. :)

Glad someone's got something out of that post! I'll be looking out for Brooke Waggoner's full album. I believe it's out fairly soon-ish.
