I think he's just a dude trying to do well and maybe get some of Joan's boobies but it's jarring to have a character who isn't a total monster or comedy shambles on the show.

That's how cannabis works I'm pretty sure. Anyway the whole episode felt like classic Mad Men, was the lad with no arm the real Don Draper? Could we also infer that his comment about don not looking so good in the afterlife ("you should see what you look like") suggest Don will be jumping off the noisy balcony?

The intro isn't about Don killing himself, it's about Don losing touch with what going on around him. He doesn't jump in the intro, the floor underneath him disappears and he sees images of a modern society as he fall helplessly. It's losing touch with the world. If he was suicidal he would jump.

Also as several others mentioned Matt Weiner (the creator of the show) wants to show Don in modern times when it ends. I mean he could kill himself as an old man, but I really really doubt that.

I thought it was the soldier/marine from the Hawaii episode who's wedding Don was in. edit: yeah I checked IMDB it's the same kid.

What he said didn't really tally at all though - something along the lines of "my wife thinks I'm MIA but really i'm dead", which doesn't fit with the Don Draper story.

It wasn't that long ago that Don meant Private Dinkins, so i just recognised him immediately.

Poor Pete - he's like Cassandra in ancient Greece (although in his case it's his own fault that no one believes him. If only he'd heed Don's warning about where his unlikeability will land him...)

Oh, and the last ever scene in Mad Men is clearly going to be of Don falling from the skyscraper (like in the intro!), with the reveal being that the whole show was Don's way of dealing with his impending death, like in Jacob's Ladder. When he hits the ground, it fades to black. Then a new scene of Don Draper, sat with his back to the shot, cigarette in hand (like in the intro!), camera slowly zooming in. Don turns slowly, smiles and winks at the camera.

Of course, all through any jovial scene involving Pete you're always expecting things to turn sour. It's nice that it didn't on that occasion.

This has happened before. Last season I'd finally gotten over the earlier seasons Jerk Pete and was feeling sorry for him after they formed the new company and he was putting in so much hard work and getting no recognition.

Then came the Joan episode.

Agree. Very well written and insightful.

'Mad Men' just gets more and more entertaining. This season has been a delight. I just can't guess where it's going and that is quite rare for any tv show.
