Mad Men

Loved the latest episode - not sure about spoiler etiquette in this thread/UK airing dates so thoughts below:

Weird to see Don in that sort of low power position when he's waiting around the office and then meeting with the partners. Peggy was particularly nasty too (she's a right wagon this year). This surely ends with Don losing his stake in the firm (reporting to Lou, no booze, pre-approved pitch patter, no being alone with clients). And he's been assigned Laine's haunted old office.

I seriously thought they were going to push in and cut to black before the answer. I was counting down the last few seconds on the video. In hindsight though, it doesn't seem Mad Men's style to pull that kind of a trick.

It's exactly Mad Men's style. Remember the end of Season 5?

I don't see Don killing himself. It's always been a narrative of reinvention, rebirth, redemption - don't see it going that dark.

Yeah, I can't see it either. In fact, I'd find it rather cheap.

There's so much speculation about what will happen to Don in the end (and to a lesser degree, Pete and Roger) but I've always felt that Mad Men has never needed anything so 'final' or such a definitive ending. So far, I think every season has always ended in a way that could have been a great finale to the series.

What was the significance of the Mets banner and it's various positions through the episode?

I like this berated down-at-heel Don, it could go literally anywhere in this last series.

I don't like how Peggy has become the replacement hate figure - Betty to Megan and now her.

Also, I think Laine had it proudly displayed in there - I think it reminds Don of the cursed office he's in and the destruction of his friend.

Peggy and Don will come good. They're both being chewed-up and spat out by SCP - I smell a breakaway agency ending. Draper-Olsen. Or Olsen-Draper. Or Draper-Draper, if they go totally mad and make her wife no. 3.

Thats completly different. The answer to that question wasnt relavent.

Accidently pos'd this but I don't think it is much different and it was certainly relevant to Don's character, or at least a possible change in his character. He'd been faithful to Megan for the whole season and it was geniune moment of 'will he or won't he'.

Hamm's said this season is about how Don rises to the occasion when he's down-and-out. I'm well up for that instead of emotional breakdown no #3.3. Haven't seen the latest ep yet but loved the end of the last one when he accepted their terms. They have no idea what they're up against.

Also what's with Joan's hatred of Don now, they used to have a lot of mutual respect. Is it all about him throwing away Jaguar last season, ruining their chance of floating the company and becoming millionaires?

Yes, but probably more to do nullifying the reason for her prostituting herself for Jaguar.

This episode is really cutting into my dreams of a spin-off sitcom starring Stan and Ginsberg.

(They would ride around in a VW camper van and solve mysteries. Julio would drive the van. They would call Peggy on the phone every week and she would give them sarcastic advice, but it always inadvertently leads them to solve the mystery. I can have a spec script ready in one week. Call me, Matthew Wiener!)

(Alternatively I have a show called GINSBERG VERSUS THE MACHINE, but that's just a title right now.)
