Glitching

I've seen alot of people spending whole games glitching, it can be pretty annoying on the whole, epseically when your team loses because some kids are spending the whole game kneeling down for each other.....

But a look on utube at some of the glitches got me thinking. Obviously if there is some numpty lying inside the pipes underground on pipeline, thats a collision mesh type exploit which is borderline cheating (not to mention useless).

But alot of these things seem fairly legit, snipers on the roof of grandmas house for instance, they were always annoying glitchers to me, but now I know how to get up there it seems fair enough, likewise getting on top of the wooden bridge.

So whats everyones opinion on this kind of thing ?

I quite like the idea of climbing onto some hard to reach spot, maybe thats the camper in me :) And to be honest I wouldnt feel like that was cheating. Not like getting outside the map and going invisible to popping inside the collision mesh.

I was thinking about this very thing after Raize's post in discussion. He said that he wouldn't feel it fair to use the useful, but glitchy, positions he'd found in the league and I agree with that.

Is it "cheating"? I'm not sure. Depends how you define it. As a constant mover I'm inclined to say yes for obvious reasons. Trying to stay neutral, I wouldn't say it's cheating as such, but I think it's pretty bad form. I'd feel dirty using them, personally.

That said, I personally have no problem taking people out on the roof of grandma's house or the bridge. Sometimes people appear to go up there just for the sake of it, and are sitting ducks.

In a hardcore league match with no kill cam I wouldn't like someone on my team or any other glitching some spot to pick everyone off without them being able to see where he is.

I think a fair rule is use legit climbing only. Ladders and obvious jumps.

Personally, if I can jump there it's fair game. Equally the same if I can climb up it. I don't agree with somewhere like the one underground on pipeline, but roof based ones are fine as far as I'm concerned. Unless some bastard is destroying me from there, then I have a problem with it :)

Well this is the thing isn't it. If you can get there in the map then surely it`s legit? After all wouldn't they have not bothered texturing areas you wernt sposed to get to ? I`ve personally never used a glitch/jump thing I usually do enjoy shooting people that use them though. But some of the videos I saw got me thinking. For instance you can get into an area on Ambush that is a sealed area between the buildings, first glance a glitch but then you notice that the devs have put a ladder in there so you can get out of it again. No need for a ladder if no one was ever meant to get there.....

There are a few 'hidden' places that are pretty useful if you can get up there, but most of them aren't worth the effort.

I had a cage match on backlot the other week and the other guy spent the whole game trying to climb up to various places. After killing him a few times he asked me to stop so he could show me his amazing climbing skills. I asked him what the point was of climbing up to all these places was and he said it gave him a 'massive advantage'. I told him to stop being such a twat and play the game properley.

Personally i think if it's an area well within the map boundaries eg a rooftop or a balcony or something then it's fine. If you're actualy climbing out of the map boundaries then you're just being a twat.

They've textured areas outside of normal play because Infinity Ward arent lazy ubisoft cunts, and you can see a lot more of the map from the various killcam/spectator cams than you do while playing.

If theres a ladder there then fair enough...

I don't particularly have a problem with it as long as they stay within the map. Like on Ambush, if someone is inside that enclosed area and kills you, at least you have an idea where they are and if you know about that enclosed area, you can chuck in some grenades or shoot through the fencing. Saw one guy get outside of the map on Ambush and was taking out loads of people running down the sides. Didn't like to see that.

Even if you can't do these jumps, as long as you know where they can be, you have got a fighting chance. Plus, it often takes some time to climb long a fence or across a rooftop, so you are vulnerable to getting shot until you get into position.

It is annoying though when you get two of your team members ignoring the game and just waste time trying to jump on each other's backs.

Personally, I quite like just the exploration aspect of it, pushing the boundries of the level, getting to places you might not be supposed to go.

Having said that, I've never been able to manage to do any of the stunts ive seen on youtube for COD4, and don't even know half of the ones you lot are talking about!

I tried the one on Crash in a private match on my own and just couldn't do it heh. What's the one in pipeline?

Anyway, yeah, most of them seem to leave you at a massive disadavantage in terms of warring anyway so I don't really see the point during proper matches.

I have no problem with it to a point. if you are playing sabotage and some shmuck takes the bomb out of bounds or stick it in a place that is inaccessible then that person should be kicked. If you are playing one of the other game types and the people are just pissing about not actually playing the game then I think the rest of the team rightly should tk the fucks. You're meant to be shooting the opposition not pissing about seeing how high you can climb.

I'm allf or it . The glitch on pipeline is bullshit but thankfully it gives no advantage. the ones on ambush give massive advantage but they were obviously designed to be there so I like em. likewise the one on crash. its a great spot and is quite tough to get to, so kudos to anyone who manages it midgame

I do like a good climb, annoyingly most of the ones on youtube can only be done by playing oldschool, being that you have the massive jump.

I do wonder though, some of those videos show so much more to the maps than you normally get to see ..makes me think it'd be better if they used the entire map.

So whats everyones opinion on this kind of thing ?

I don't agree with it at all. I used to use the ban hammer on a regular basis on the VSF CS source server when I saw people glitching. We are playing a game that has rules... if I go into an area and I check all the usual places and then have someone shooting me because they've managed to perch themselves on top of a street light I view that as cheating. It's not uber skill, its just exploiting a loop hole in the game engine. Even more so now that people are not using any skill what so ever to find these things, they are just going onto youtube and bunging in COD 4 Crash Glitch.. OMG!!!!

You should be a good enough player to twat someone upside the head without resorting to underhand tactics.

I think some of them are deliberate parts of the level design - there's a window in the bombed out building on overgrown which you can climb through but is eally hard to reach for a reason, I think.

Most of them aren't very useful though, a couple of the ones on Ambush are annoying if someone gets up there, but on most of the maps it's quite obvious what's going on. Folk on the roof of the cottage on Overgrown make me laugh as it's a big 'shoot me' sign.

This.

I'm against glitching, though. I don't see jumping on ledges etc as glitching.

Yeah, could someone clarify, what does the OP actually mean by glitching?

I assumed it meant just a bit of lucky/skillful jumping. Is this not the case?

No. Glitching is an exploit in the game that can get you into places that you aren't supposed to go to, such as outside the map boundaries. I find these illegal.

Then there's the places that you can get to using a combination of running and jumping to and on ridges/roofs. Some are designed to get on to (using fences/walls, jumping over gaps or pulling yourself up), others are solid errors (as we 3D artists call them) where there's no visible (or wide enough) ridge to stand on, but you can nonetheless. I find these legal.

Everyone in the game calls it glitching no matter where you are, I`m talking about the more legit side, like getting on roofs etc.

I don't call it glitching! :) I call it "you bastards how did you get up there"

If I can climb there and it's not (as was mentioned above) outside the map or on some ledge that doesn't exist then it's ok.

Well, being an old Action Quake 2 veteran where jump skills was the name of the game I am all for jumping and climbing walls and rooftops. Because you have to work a bit to get up there and you are exposed like hell when you try to get there you are fair game. High risk high pay imho. But pipeline glitch is just stupid. I feel the devs must have had it in mind that you can jump up places since they have put in a function that you "grab" ledges and pull yourself up to them in some cases. And when a player hides out in some of those places and I spot them it takes me about 10 sec to kill him or flush him out. And i find it a bit frustrating that ppl just want us to use "the usual spot" all the time.

It's all about perspective. I play Halo online with my partner quite a bit and she has always moaned at me for cheating when I jump. Essentially, she sees ducking to reach the long jumps as cheating. 99% of Halo players will see it as completely normal.

The problem is that there has to be a line somewhere and the position of this line is different to different people. Of course, in an ideal world, this line would be set by the developer but people will always find a way to break it.

Things like granma's house roof are clearly not breaking the line drawn by the developers.

In a way, the combo system in Street Fighter 2 was glitching as that was an unintentional addition to the game.

I'd say for this game that if you're doing anything that wouldn't be physically possible in real life (such as climbing through the pipes in pipeline) then it's fair game. The majority of the positions mean not much movement is possible and you're a sitting duck anyway.

It's not particularly useful, but if you enter the underground from where the trains are and take a left, there are pipes on your right. You can climb through/inside them and lie prone, waiting. I've not actually done it so I'm not sure on the specifics of doing it. If you spent the whole game there you wouldn't get 5 kills as there's so little traffic, but it's bad form to go there, really.

I've still never managed to get onto the roof of Grandma's house.

Well then, I think it's time for a wee tour-de-glitch! Tomorrow night?

I'm not watching that video meerman and after checking all relevant laws in this area I don't think you can make me.

Awwh go on! I'll let you hate me even more!
