Sega Saturn Emulator (SSF)

Hi, just flicking through the Emulator thread in the stickies and had a crack downloading the sega saturn emulator and I must say I'm shocked at how good it is. It has handled at full speed every disk I've thrown at it. Including demos.

Now what I'm hoping to do is create ISO images of my 40+ games here and run them on my TV through my PC, using a 360 controller to play them with.

Is this doable? First of all I'll need to know how to make an ISO image from my saturn games (what programs the best to use), then I need to know just how decent a 360 pad will be when playing saturn games?

Has anyone tried this setup? I'm thinking that, via the PC > HDTV link it will stop that scart/rf slowdown that you get with older consoles.

I'm looking forward to hearing your replies!

I've just tried it and it works a treat for me too. Saves me having to pull the saturn out to play shining force III. Last time I tried a saturn emulator it was awful.

yeah, agreed! It must be a while ago, because I'm sure it was around the time I was still playing my Dreamcast a lot. But even so, I must have tried about 10 disks in total (briefly) but they were all running 100%. Only thing was there was a very slight blip in the sound, almost like it was overlapping itself by running fractionally too fast, or something.

But anyone have any ideas on the ISOs?

Playing with a 360 controller?

and tv lag when playing on a HDTV?

It runs perfectly on my PC:

Intel Quad 2.4Ghz

4GB RAM

GeForce 8600 GT

Vista 64

No idea about 360 pads but i dont see why it wouldnt work, although the dpad might not be up to it. I just use a USB Saturn pad.

Also, i've got my PC connected to my TV through DVI>HDMI and that works fine, if thats what you're asking.

And yeah, you can create isos, but the saturn is a bit weird in the way it handles audio se you need a cue file and a load of wavs too.

How? the wired pads are not detected in the settings

I plugged my wired pad into my PC - 'ages ago' - it detected it - I think it did little download from Microsoft and voila - everything sees it. It takes a little more for the Hori stick. I posted the link how to do it in the Virtua Fighter 5 thread. As for SSF - goto options/controller - on the port1 drop down bar choose 'direct connect'. Then below that in player1A - choose 'Control pad' then press the Redefine button. Press the directions/buttons on your 360 pad as UP/DOWN X/A etc as are asked for on the screen. Pad works!

What are the recommended system requirements to run this emulator smooth then? I have an older P4 2.66 with 2 gig ram. Some not too good Gfx card though which is prolly about 128mb ram ATI thing. I do have a laptop which has a core duo, but would rather use my main screen.

Not sure, I think its game dependant, but I've found that my PC seems to be fine with everything so far, and I wouldnt call it an 'uber ninja pc!11!!!', but i do remember trying this before on my old sempron and it not working at all.

Does Dragon Force work yet? Last time I tried (admittedly quite a while ago) it certainly didn't.

Yep

You need some sort of dual core to get good performance off it. Run it on your laptop and it should work great, and also - S-Video Output :D

I had a quick go at work as I had some Saturn games in my desk drawer (don't ask) and no go. I got around 1 FPS.

Spec:

3.2ghz P4

2GB RAM

ATi Radeon X300

I know the card's rough but surely the rest should make up for it? If not, I think the answer to peoples' spec question is: it's more about the gfx card than the CPU.

I may go as far as buying a card for my PC. Should one for around £20 (an older Geforce card, say) do the job?

I'm using a Athlon 64 3800+ single core and it runs just peachy.

how about without scanlines?

now I can compare this to cassini...

[edit]

cassini no longer runs on my machine(!?)
