Doesn't want you to play MGS3

I totally disagree. Not only is it the best MGS game to date, and set a great background to the MGS series, but it ties into MGS4 too. MGS4 spins off all the games, MGS3 no less than the others, plus it's brilliant to play.

I really think Shinkawa's drawing abilities have never been better. That's awesome.

Aye, lets hope they decide to release an artbook for MGS4. I've been going through the artbooks for 1&2 and i love Shinkawa's style. :P I was really disappointed that they didn't bother to release one for MGS3.

I can't work out if you've played MGS 4 or not, but this is certainly not the feeling that I came away with after completing it.

I agree, though, that MGS 3 can seem a bit unforgiving at first, but actually I just think it requires you to adopt a slightly different approach to stealth compared to MGS 1 and 2. I found the first hour or so unreasonably difficult till it all clicked into place and instead of trying to pop in and out of hiding places (as in the first two games) I started to snake around in the grass by default and used stealth a little differently. Then it became a lot easier than MGS 2. And in that respect it's also closer to MGS 4.

Right. my reply.

I've played the first chapter, seen the first briefing and saw a bit of the second chapter before they chucked me out.

The problem with playing MGS3 as you've said abvove is that the cam (pre Subsistence) wasn't up to it, and the controls were pre-MGS4 rigid - with walk > crouch > prone lacking the quick transition.

Also, the alarms were bollocks - in MGS2 guards had to spot you and radio in; in MGS3 the alarm activated as soon as they spotted you as long as they had an active radio. Rubbishness.

Well all I would say is that the most thrilling moment I experienced relating to the narrative came a few chapters later, and it definitely wouldn't have been so thrilling had I not played MGS 3. My second-most thrilling moment would similarly not have been so thrilling if I hadn't played MGS 1/Twin Snakes.

I'm not sure I get your points about rigid controls. Compared to MGS 4, all of the previous games have rigid controls. I think MGS 3 is the closest to the fluidity of MGS 4 in terms of controls and the sort of stealth/action you employ.

Taurus, do you mean the

Eva bike chase bit?

I can't wait for it after replaying MGS3. BTW, does she spent the entire section

firing into Fray Bentos pies like Rab Florence at a wrap party a la the end of MGS3?

To the first bit: sort of, I think. To the second bit: I don't even know what that means...

The camera and controls weren't a problem in the industrial setting of Shadow Moses and Big Shell. Supplanted into the wider outdoor environment however, the game struggled to approximate the type of stealth you'd want in that environment.

Which MGS4 wholeheartedly fixes, might I add. :(

It's come around quick hasn't it.

Like a numpty I forgot all about it and only ordered my dualshock yesterday.

So... who's going to be using a dualshock? Surely it's the only way to play MGS4, given how it's been used by Hideo in the past.

PS - I'm just guessing about the dualshock - can we talk about it without spoilering anything, thanks.

Mines has been sent and dispatched.

However how are they sending these? Cant be by normal second class royal mail considering the price can it? Whats the chances of a courier service...

Mine's got a Pacelforce tracking number attached to it. Could be here a wee bit quicker then!

Am getting mines delivered to my work so it shouldn't be a problem.

Same here, not worried about it arriving, more when it arrives.

They should all have a tracking number. I still expect it by thursday though, cant see me being lucky enough to get it tomorrow.

I'm going really crazy now, more excited about this than GTA4 tbh.

Velos (or anyone that has played it), is it worth shelling out for a Dual Shock 3? Does it make a difference and without saying much is it used for anything other than the usual rumbling during shots and explosions etc?
