Metal Gear Solid 4

Just finished it - fantastic game! The ending was pretty lengthy, but still enjoyable though. Sorry - didn't time it, but I'd estimate around an hour in total.

I got some pretty cool rankings upon completion -

Eagle - loads of headshots (highest ranking), Hyena (or something) for finding and hoarding loads of items, and Tarantula - dispatched a lot of people without being caught a lot. :)

I've just looked at the conditions for getting the

stealth and bandanna items and fuck me! Complete the game without killing anyone or getting any alarms!? Maaaan....

Everyone on here is loving the game, but is it a gamers game? Doesn't seem to be the media overload and public consciousness event that Halo 3 was. Would have thought that Sony/Konami would have pushed the marketing harder as it is the PS3's premier franchises? Just seems a bit subdued.

You know what....I'm really shocked as I'm loving it. I loved the first segment of MGS2 and then haven't been able to get back into since. And once I adjusted to the controls I have suddenly been consumed by it (to the extent that I missed most of the football, which is most unlike me). Still on Act 1, but I'm finding it very exciting, in fact bringing back those feelings when I first played the MGS2 Demo. I'm a bit useless at it, and therefore a little concerned it might get tricky on the difficulty setting I chose (the default one). However, I'm even really liking the cut scenes, and it makes me want to get up to date on the backstory. Anyone got a handy link as I'm feeling lazy and just want to play more of the game!!! Oh, and the sound and music have both been spectacular so far. God bless my Kef Reference Four's :P

To be fair, this would be bloody hard to sell off to the mass market. You have to be a fan of the series going into it really to get half(all?) of the conversations.

Yeah. MGS was relatively straight forward and that - along with lashings of hype - was enough to sell MGS2 to the mass-market....MGS2 ending up being a batshit insane, looney-tune affair *really* didn't do wonders for the series' hopes of expanding its userbase and Snake Eater sold more than 3m less than its predecessor as a result. I can't see this doing anything but continuing the decline given the PS3 userbase.

I'm not an enormous fan of the series - I got a fair way through the first, completed the second and never really got into the third, though to be honest I didn't even try. Despite that, I've got MGS, MGS3 and MGS: The Twin Snakes all laying around the house. :P That said, I'm really enjoying this one. I'm not going to 'get it' on the same level as one who has played them all to completion and really embraced the stories, but I'm finding it enjoyable by itself. I suppose it helps that I've played the others to some extent though...

I think I may attempt to play through one version of the original and then Snake Eater properly after I finish Guns Of The Patriots. Would it be worth my while to get hold of Subsistence instead of playing the original version of MGS3? I'm liking the sound of the improved camera, mainly....

Absolutely. You simply cannot underestimate the significance of that camera. Plus I think you also get a new type of camo which makes the game that much easier (or less of a hassle) to play.

I

forgot the password to use in Otacon's office. It's not ranmdomly generated, is it? :P

Probably not, as Otacon actually says it out loud. I quickly bashed it into my phone when he said it - it's 48273. Although if I'd had the balls (I hadn't saved it for a while), I might have tried putting the wrong one in to see what would happen...

Same here, fired it into my phone just incase you had to remember it, didn't think they'd have the balls to make you remember it. So what happens if you dont, can you actually not continue the game? :P

I was gonna get it wrong too to see but didn't wanna ruin the flow, so will try next play through!

Regarding the use of the Codec...

Is is just me, or are there significantly less Codec contacts here - and indeed, altogether less lengthy Codec conversations in MGS4 than any of the previous games?

Or am I just missing a trick? Are there more that I should be noting down?

Can I, for instance, call Cambpell or Meryl or Drebin at any time in any mission?

Having only Otacon and Rose to call for advice feels a little... lite, compared to the established set of Mission Commander | Mission Support (Save) | Weapons Expert | Sympathetic Scientist | Female Insider Contact | etc etc.

Boys, it's on! I bought this a few hours ago. I meant to hold out until August, but I just couldn't based on the enthusiasm in the thread. Now I've just met

Drebin

and I'm back taking it to the streets. It's so good to feel love blooming on the battlefield again.

Oh man, are you in for a treat!

It's past 4.30am and I just finished chapter 4... took a shower, made a coffee and am now settling in to finish this mofo.

When I have I'm going to sleep all day, wake up and watch the Making of Blu-Ray, then nip into town before everywhere shuts to grab the MGS4 headset and spend the remainder of the weekend splitting my time between replaying certain chapters to experiment, and trying out MGO.

Or if I wake early enough, a train trip to a nearby indie that sells DS3's could be on the cards.

Epic really isn't the word for this game; I'm giving it a weekend to match. :P

Woman in Blockbuster said DS3 was due in yesterday but hadn't arrived. Does anyone know the release date? Watched the intro last night but really don't fancy starting it with the piece of shit Sony give you in the box.

I'm sorry, she lied to you, there is no current street date. You could always import and become an online ninja in the meantime if you really object to the idea of starting the game without rumble...

Well after deciding I wanted nothing to do with MGS4 a long time ago I went and bought it anyway. This means I've come into it knowing nothing about it at all. I've completed and loved the first and second (Well, not so much the second) but didn't get along with MGS3. I was thinking that MGS4 was going to be more of the same, and it is, but it's just so well put together and just really good fun.

I'm in act 2 at the moment but there is still something that really confuses me. I really enjoyed the bit at the start where

you break out the prisoners

and then attack the

power plant with them

. The problem with this for me is that I'm still not clear on just when you should be fighting the PMCs. Am I supposed to get into actual firefights with them at any point? Does it matter if they see me when in the middle of these firefights? The reason I ask is that sometimes it seems like the game is asking me to get into a firefight (Especially with the amount of weapons and ammo you have) but doing so seems to alert the soldiers of your presence and they seem to be respawning. It's not like I want to play it as an FPS or something but I'm not clear on what the deal is with firefights. Is it pointless to get into firefights because the PMCs will infinitely respawn?

Its a bit either or,

They can get a alerted to an "unknown enemy", you kinda have to be a support sniper-type role

and the bit you are at specifically -

they stop spawning when the rebels get in and shut down the power plant. but I did have a "are these guys infinite re-spawning?" moment on an area later

Yeah, the

power plant

bit is where I noticed it the most. I was shooting the guards and could see them respawn from the same place (Well, they wouldn't appear out of thin air, but you know) so I was just confused thinking "So I guess I shouldn't be getting into firefights as it's pointless, but then why the hell am I being given so many weapons?". So just to get it straight, you can shoot and kill as many people as you want, you just have to avoid getting seen? That makes more sense I guess.

Essentially yeah.

The PMC's know who the Rebels are, but have no idea who you are so it brings a higher alert if they outrightly see you.

and well with the weapons you can essentially do what you want. Snipe, sneak or run and gun.

If you wear one of the

rebel disguises

that match the rebels that the PMC are fighting, will they spot you and the alarm go off? (While they are in a two way fight already I mean)

Don't think so.

At least it doesn't in Act 1 so I can't see it suddenly changing for Act 2. Though I never did find a disguise

There are just too many weapons in this game.

How did you guys go about boss 2?...

Eventually my tactic became just to run around the lowest level, shooting out the windows to make her come inside and then fight her like that while hiding behind pillars for the attacks. Took ages though, was using the G something rifle and one full burst at her would take like 3% off her at the most. Took me roughly 20mins a fight. Took several attempts

There was one in a locker in Act 1 in the Rebel's underground safehouse. In Act 2 it's in the starting area
