I'm curious now,

how did you stealth it past?

Just get low as soon as the section starts, get the camo going. Then use your tranq gun to take out the frogs as they approach. They often hang around in pairs so when you tranq one, keep an eye out for another nearby. Keep doing that to work your way across the deck – didn't bother going up ladders or stairways in the end – and when you come to the geckos, crawl along slowly, and wait for the to pass.

Trying to do it guns blazing was fun for a while but it was getting me nowhere

I stealthed that too, tried it a few times various ways as I thought it was nearing the end and wanted some good sneaky action in before it finished!

Much more satisfying when you get past the lot of them without being seen, took them all out with the tranq gun too.

How?!

I couldnt move a few feet without being seen!

And when I was, that was pretty much it as sneaking options went.

As Herbs says, just stay low, and take it slowly, use your Solid Eye to see where they are and take them out one by one, hiding the bodies if you need to!

Also, you can use the Mk.III for reconnisance (sp?), send it out and have a look about, or even zap people with it now that I think about it, forgot you could do that!

The one thing to remember is that

whilst you are in Caution mode for the whole time you can take them down one by one and they won't respawn. When you get spotted in ALERT mode you are essentially fucked as they keep respawning and keep coming at you. It makes getting to the door and turning the handle near enough impossible.

Whilst some of the other fellas here used tranquilisers I never bothered. My favourite was to stun them with stun grenades and then shoot them with a silenced rifle. No chance of them getting up then or recovering. You can use silenced weapons with no problem, even if there's 2 guards together as even if you kill 1 the other one doesn't know where you are as long as they can't see you and you can pick them off once they appear again.

Also, make your way along the ladders which are very handy. What I did was when I started killed the 2 guys coming down the left, then stunned and killed the 2 guys in the middle, made my right and then killed the guard up high and stunned and killed the others to the right. Made my way down the right handside and climbed up a ladder which put me on a balcony which then let me jump/roll to another section platform to the right. Crawled all the way along there and then sniped everyone that I could. Dropped down off the platform and then continued slowly down the right hand side. Hid behind one of the boxes and popped and shot the gekko when it wasn't looking with the railgun until i killed it. Then got to the door at the back

Interesting. I know the level is set up so you can drop from rail to rail and jump from gap to gap; I'd like to explore that, see how far you can go.

Shame its such a short chapter, though. That's basically the only stealth in the final act of the greatest stealth epic ever.

I've just started act 4, about 10 minutes in, and realised I'm playing the game of the year. Well, joint first with GTA for me at least, though I'll concede that's partly because it tugs on the old nostalgia strings pretty well if you've player the other MGS. Which brings me to my next point:

I've just spoilered the ending for myself :( Although I only completed MGS1 and MGS2 I only played the first hour or so of MGS3 so there was a load of stuff I didn't understand properly at the end of act 3, you know, info on who some characters are. I looked it up on Wiki and was doing well avoiding spoilers until some dickhead casually drops into the entry for Solidus

They used his body as a decoy for Big Boss'

out of the blue. FAIL  Not only that, but then someone dropped a similar cuntsack of a spoiler in a different profile, saying how

Big Boss

pulls the plug on, well you know. Fuck fuck fuck, the ending has been wrecked hasn't it :o

Despite this I'm going to treat this bit of info like The Game (Which you've just lost  ) and try and get it out of my mind. Can someone please explain the following to me:

Is Big Boss the person you play in MGS3?

Who is Zero?

Who are the Patriots (I know who is in them, but in relation to the story)

I don't understand why they need

Big Boss' body. What is Big Boss' relation to the AIs?

Revolver Ocelot is

actually Liquid Snake right?

Are the PMCs evil? I don't understand why Meryll seems to be running them yet so is Ocelot.

I don't really get this AI thing. Who made it? What's the purpose of it?

When they tell Snake he's turning old they say he was

built like that so that he would essentially have a use by date and people couldn't use him against the company that sold him. I don't get it, was Solid Snake built as a weapon?

.

I think that covers it for now. Non-spoiler help would be appreciated.

That's really harsh, I'm sorry for you :o

Is Big Boss the person you play in MGS3? Yes

Who is Zero? The Colonel in MGS 3, the equivalent of Roy Campbell. Head of the patriots

Who are the Patriots (I know who is in them, but in relation to the story)

They control society, well they do when they became AIs. I always think of them as the illuminati

Revolver Ocelot is

actually Liquid Snake right?

Wait until Act 5 - it is explained in full.

Are the PMCs evil? I don't understand why Meryll seems to be running them yet so is Ocelot.

Meryl is US military, the PMC's are evil but only because they are forced into it by the Sons of hte Patriot system. The War economy is a result of the Patriot's AI

I don't really get this AI thing. Who made it? What's the purpose of it?

Zero made it to continue the legacy fo the patriots (he was aging) and they are intended to control and regulate all of society. Ie electricity, water, etc as well as teh people under the SOP

When they tell Snake he's turning old they say he was

built like that so that he would essentially have a use by date and people couldn't use him against the company that sold him. I don't get it, was Solid Snake built as a weapon?

. Well

I don't think he was built like that deliberately - Liquid and Solidus are superior clones. As I understand it, Zero ordered the Les Enfants Terribles project to create a new Big Boss because he was the icon for his Patriot organisation and because of his guilt/friendship with Big Boss.

I think that covers it for now. Non-spoiler help would be appreciated.

Also I just remembered the Dr Madnar who

Raiden sees

is from Metal Gear 2.

Word of warning for those who don't want a lot of the "Kojima" touches spoiled: don't watch the 1Up Show review. While, for all I know, it might only be revealing a tiny amount of the game's quirks, there was a lot of stuff in there that I had no idea was in the game, and that I kind of wish that I'd found out for myself.

Yeah, after finishing it I watched the video reviews from gametrailers and gamespot, so glad I stopped myself from watching them before finishing it!

Haven't watched those, at least now I know not to. The 1Up video review (viewable here) is pretty damn spoiler-free, though, so that's safe to watch.

I am a bit of a cunt when I play MGS sometimes. I traq people because I don't feel like outright killing them. But then I walk past their sleeping body and imagine them waking up very soon and sending in a squad to look for me. I decide I don't want to be arsed with the hassle, so I shoot them in the head with a silenced handgun. I feel bad everytime the Z's abruptly stop with my execution, but I dunno, I keep doing it.

I just beat the first boss in act 5 last night.

I tried setting my controller to 2. Then Otacon called me and said that wouldn't work a second time

Me too...

although I wonder what happens after the fight

if you aren't using a Dual Shock 3...

i were hoping people would post there rank ,

mine were frog if your interested becouse i like to roll forwards a lot.

I did:

Eagle for head shots

Hyena for finding loads of guns

Tarantula for Killing lots of people but rarely being seen.

All in all I think I was a bit gung-ho...

Having finished the game yesterday, some impressions.

Overall I loved the game, definitely GoTY for me so far. The improved controls have made this the most playable MGS ever in my opinion, and the rest of the stuff in there (production values, bafflingly silly story, crazy boss battles) is pure Metal Gear. Loved every minute of it. I liked the fact that choosing an easy difficulty option actually makes the game easy (unlike certain other games I could mention, ahemNinjaGaiden2ahem). Loads of replay value too - my first play through I was very stealthy and used the tranq guns. Looking forward to delving into the Drebin system more for weapon mods etc. Also the missus actually enjoyed watching me play the game despite not being a gamer - she was enjoy the characters, story, and silliness of it all.

Now for some criticism!

Stuff I missed:

  • The Metal Gear Solid theme song! It might have been in there somewhere, quoted in other tunes etc, but we never really had that big Bond-theme payoff, the big theme from MGS2/MGS3.
  • The cast of codec chums. Glad the codec is less intrusive than MGS2 of course, but the whole game only has two codec contacts. Can't help but feel the game has lost an important hallmark of the series.

Stuff I didn't like so much:

  • The product placement. Too much of it, felt too heavy-handed. Basically, I noticed it, that's the main problem.
  • Big events in the game that had been spoiled by promo teaser trailers. IMO they showed FAR too much before the game came out.
  • Why does Sasaki / Akiba have so much screen time? He's not an important character.
The romance subplot with Meryl just didn't work at all, with the awful "let's propose marriage in the middle of a big fight" thing being ripped straight from Pirates of the Carribean.
  • Nanomachines. Jesus, that's the explanation for absolutely everything. Kojima has always suffered from feeling compelled to explain every tiny thing in excruciating and needless detail. and MGS4 is no different.
  • I thought it was odd to pick old, minor characters and make them suddenly so important in MGS4 - Mei Ling, Para Medic, Sig Int etc. I guess KojiPro didn't want to add even more characters.
  • Those little robot spider Gekko things were okay, but I think their overwhelming presence in the entrance hall of Shadow Moses really cheapened what should have been one of the most dramatic moments in the game. Act 4 would have been better if you'd been left to your memories and flashbacks, only interrupted occasionally by elite PMC troopers etc.
  • In Shadow Moses, after going to Otacon's old office and encountering a Gekko... it took a while to figure out what I was supposed to do in electrifying the floor. It wasn't helped by the fact that there is an anti-tank weapon on the ground nearby so I assumed I was supposed to take on the Gekko with firearms (but he's actually invincible - you have to electrify the floor).
  • The Raven boss battle is probably something I probably didn't do correctly. I just stood at the top of the tower and kept shooter. There must be a more satisfying way of taking down that boss, but I thought it was weak compared to the bosses of MGS3.
  • Meeting Big Boss at the end was a brilliant moment, but felt rather rushed. It is as if someone realised there were still a few loose ends they had to quickly and cheaply tie up, so they just had added a tedious long discussion where Big Boss explains everything (and in some cases muddies the water even more).

I did it using sixaxis... it's quite funny, he tries to move your controller, fails, and then freaks out about the lack of rumble

See when your going through again for extras, for example the

bandana

, you've not to kill anyone, which is fair enough, bosses you can still shoot and then finish off with the tranq gun when they are in human form but what about Gekko and the like? I guess you can kill them as they aren't people? Or can you not? Any help would be nice as I'm going for a

bandana/stealth

run through now I think!

I'm about to do the same - you definitely can kill them with no detrimental effect. Remember the part in act 4

where you have to kill gekkos to stop them reaching Raiden's fight? well... there's no way to do that with tranqs!

I think with the bosses if you defeat the beast stage with tranqs/stun you get a little statue of them too...
