Metal Gear Solid 4

I finished it, my rank was Hawk. Such a wonderful game, maybe too good as there's a big gap in my gaming now that only another MGS can fill. I dunno where Edge got their 8 from, but for me this is the game of the current generation. If Halo 3, Galaxy and GTA IV are 10s then MGS4 is a 15, not since Resi 4 has a game held my attention like this.

I picked up BF Bad Company and Ninja Gaiden 2 on Monday but it's not the same.

Act 5

Just done Screaming Mantis. I was disappointed that the "tanker" level didn't last any longer than one sneaking area but never mind. The "ZOMG it's a PS30R" crap that keeps being referenced is embarrassing and tiresome.

Still, I did enjoy the REX/ RAY skuff at the end of Act 4. Vamp was weak. So sick of seeing Otacon weeping. Raiden

Whilst it is an incredible experience and a lot of fanboy jizz, from Act 2 onwards I don't recall there being any Metal Gear-type gameplay.

Shadow Moses

is all well and good but for the only enemies to be armballs and cow-frog mechs is a colossal wasted opportunity. Even Act 1 wasn't especially MGS-y as the war situation negates the subtlety that made the previous games what they were.

The story is fascinating and engrossing though and the fact that it *is* a massive fanboy jizz is brilliant.

What do you mean?

There hasn't really been much "sneaking around bases playing games with guards" kind of stuff. There's a couple guards to tranq on Act 3 when you're following the bloke, Act 4 is full of stupid fucking armball things which are just utterly shit, Act 5 there's one tiny area where you do a bit of good old fashioned hiding and inching forward then it stops. (Not really spoilers so haven't bothered tagging)

I have sneaked all my way through the game instead of scripted events and bosses. I even "stealthed" my way through Act 5.

What are you on about? The game gives you the freedom to do what you want.

Not from Act 3 onwards there isn't. There's some but you'd have to be clearly insane to think there's loads (and I've already conceded that Act 4 is sneaky but, again as I've already said, armballs are nowhere near as good to sneak by as Genome guards).

Almost the whole thing mate. And I am not the only one. My friend did it first.

The whole thing is one small area. Act 4 is pretty good for stealth, but I do agree that there should have been a lot more emphasis on it.

MGS4 is a fantastic experience, but if you want the "traditional" MGS gameplay i'd recommend tracking down a copy of MGS2: Substance. This game has all the traditional gameplay of MGS mixed up in different ways in the VR/Alternative missions including the hallmarks of the game such as the boxy environments with the radar & vison cones. I still really like the little story slices that are the Snake Tales too as they are'nt so convoluted as the main game's plot while still giving a reasonably satisfying Metal-Gear story context for your activities.

Speaking of the plot of MGS2 though, I feel a bit more charitably disposed towards it now that a lot of wierder story elements & less than satisfying conclusion have been resolved by MGS4.

Well except for whole Ocelot/Liquid thing. (MGS4 Spoiler)

Hypnosis on himself? Why? how does convincing himself he's Liquid help Big Boss?

That has to do with the scale of the area, not the stealth aspects of the mechanics which is what he was talking about.

I stealthed the whole game which means the stealth mechanics are there for anyone who wants to use them. There is as much emphasis on stealth as you want.

You stealthed the on rails sections? And the

Metal Gear

fight? And the sections where you just hold fort against swathes of enemies?

The stealth mechanics are there for the sections you use them, and when they're used they're brilliant. I just wanted more of them, and Act 5 was disappointing in it's use of them. Stealthing through that area is all well and good, but I felt it needed more.

Allow me to summarise thusly since we seem to be a little bit befuddled here.

Act 1 and 2, yeah stealthy. Sneak around, guards patrolling, lots of options.

Act 3 little bit of sneaking and guard-baiting at the beginning.

Act 4 sneaking but armballs are crap. No wall-knocking, porn-mag placing fun. Can't CQC an armball, can't use one as a shield, can't hide them in lockers, can't tranq them, can't kill them. Rubbish.

Act 5 sneak your way to a door. No more sneaking ever again.

its was basically one big massive distraction for the patriots. He pasted a big "look at me! look at me! Come and get me! nerr nerr!" sign on his back

I'm still not entirely satisfied with the supposed explanation for that.

I mean, if that's what the purpose of becoming Liquid was, why did he need to remove the arm which actually was turning him into Liquid only to go to a massive effort to turn himself into him? He clearly wasn't in control of it as some of his actions (like going out of his way to kill Snake at the end of Act 4) clearly were of no benefit to the overall plan.

I can see what you're saying, but personally I saw it as a way of varying up the gameplay in order for it not be become repetitive. So you apply the stealth mechanic in different situations.

The initial intent, was what i posted but there were times where the liquid personaility was a bit too convincing and didn't quite stick to the plan

Act 5 was a weird mixture of gaming styles. Firstly you have the brilliant nostalgia it brings, then the annoyance of the

armballs

, then a

pretty great boss battle, then a whole host of gaming styles in the second half with another boss battle

. I was actually won over by the

armballs and Geckos

in Act 5 after a while, reminded me of the drone in Empire Strikes Back just hanging around in a wasteland, ready to fuck up anyone that it stumbles across.

I found stealthing my way

past the armballs

far more satisfying than shooting all of the fuckers, and it's an essential tactic on harder levels.

Looking back I found Act 5 to be pretty amazing and chock full of more ideas than most games wheel out in their entirety.

Imp appears to be on the 16hours mark. So him probably

I had a go this morning after not playing for over a week and... man, I sucked! This aside, I'm probably not the man for the job - I have strange playing hours and rubbish organisational skills. Also, I don't want to step on Spacehost's toes if he wants to head the clan, but I'll gladly set the clan up if I can abdicate control to someone else when they reach 20 hours though.

question on act 5

Why does Snake walk through the Microwave hall? Could he not have just sent the MK iii seeing as Otacon does all the work anyway?

Did you miss the bit where

the scarabs try to attack it

?

Are you simple? It even bloody tells you on screen! How did you manage to get this far?
Im not simple. Thanks for your helpful and constructive post though. I was battling in my mind, is she alive, or is she simply a dead husk being cruely manipulated by "that" external force and maybe I had to make a more considered choice with which doll I used. We cant all be as massively clever as you young man now, can we?
