DOOM - Rip and Tear... Anywhere

Gambit

I maybe speaking hyperbole but Halo CE is my all time favourite FPS when it comes to combat but this comes close or equals it.  Nothing better than getting in the zone and dodging, glory killing, chainsawing a room/area full of demons.  I do think the weapon switching mechanic is simple genius allowing time to slow down but not stop when changing weapon.  I understand the technical reason behind it but I wished demon carcasses with guts and gore were left behind like Brutal Doom.  (Hopefully mods come out for PC to enable this)

i could be late on this but I hope there will be more single player levels like the original doom games with more difficulty levels.  Or user created levels.

Still not completed it yet but saviouring every moment.

Have you tried the snapmap and arcade modes? They might fulfil your needs.

I recently completed the campaign on this and wholeheartedly agree with all the positive comments here. What a stunning game.

I'm praying for the day some DLC is announced.

It's such a shame that their only misstep with this was to bet on multiplayer instead of the campaign, and focus their DLC strategy accordingly.  I can only assume some marketing idiot didn't appreciate the masterpiece that they'd created?

It's such a refreshing game to play - no pretensions, just mayhem. Turn on, blast your way through a couple of checkpoints, maybe mash one of those demon infestation thingies for a challenge, and that's your lunchtime sorted.

I mean, playing Doom in your lunch hour - just how it should be! (LAN) Party like it's 19991993.

(Even then, the background story is just enough to satisfy - I just pissed someone off bigtime by the way I 'turned off' three relays; most gratifying.)

Sorry, I know I'm late with my enthusing but haven't had a game grab my attention in such a way for a while.

A thing I'm enjoying a lot during my daily hour or so with the game is that it has completely forced me to change my FPS playing style.

In shooters I usually chip away at levels, taking the sniper / long-range approach, peaking round corners, firing off a few shots, inching towards completion... here there's not even a scope unless you add a mod! But more to the point, you have to charge in guns blazing, looking for up-close glory kills to have any hope of progressing, and doing so is so satisfying that there's barely any inclination to go back to the softly, softly approach honed over 20 years.

Just a beautifully designed game that encourages the player to go wild with the playset created and have a huge grin on their face while doing so.

I really love the weapon mod challenges as they require you to adopt a particular approach for each one. Sniping for the rifle mod, blowing imps to shit with the explosive shotgun etc. The whole game just made me smile, especially when played through headphones. Although my wife scared the crap out of me when she appeared halfway through an intense gore nest session.

Yeah, I'm the same - but it feels so natural and slick to do so, I hardly noticed the change in my style; the movement is spot on, especially mantling. It's more like ballet than battle, especially waltzing with a Hellknight or two ('You just follow my lead, darling...').

I was thinking how stodgy Resi 4 would feel after playing this...

I just started this last night after getting it for a bargain 11.50 during cyber monday.  Loved the first levels so far!

Can i just hammer through without looking for secrets etc or will i need to find all the powerups to be able to stand a chance later in the game? I kinda cant be arsed looking about too much as my gaming time is always short.

Spoiler

There's a really useful secret on level 2, but really although finding them is optional, i enjoyed hunting them down

need to go back through and mop up the ones i missed

i think you probably get it next level anyway but it was my favourite non-shotgun weapon by far

Absolutely, feels very natural within minutes. Same with the movement, haven't even thought about adjusting the camera or sensitivity (don't even know if you can). I picked this up with an older Call of Duty, imagine I'll need to play something entirely different before switching because as enjoyable as the COD games can be, anything other than Doom will feel pretty pedestrian for a little while.

Found a few secrets but after my collector OCD kicked in last night during Argent Tower and slowed things down thought I'll just have a run to completion and then go back to explore the levels a bit more. Get the feeling when the credits roll this will be a game that demands a second (and third) play-through.

Picked this up for 20. So just

gone to Hell a second time

I'm ready for it to be over. I enjoy the game (and it's beautifully made/responsive controls) but I think it's shown me all it has to offer several hours ago. I've not seen any new weapons (bar one story one) or new enemies for a while (bar a boss). About 2 hours ago I got a "Glory Kill all Normal Enemies" achievement.

It's good - but it feels like now I'm just killing the same enemies in similar rooms with same weapons. There's no ongoing escalation or evolution of design or mechanics - or inventive set pieces/rooms (although the room where you got the aforementioned story gun was different)

I get why - that's not what Doom's trying to be. The closest comparison I can think of is Wolfenstien. That was an old style game reimagined for the current times - combining new and old. This is an old game remade for the current times - they've added/tweaked some stuff.

Feels like it could have been an excellent punchy 7 hour game, that's been stretched out to a 10-12 hour game to it's detriment.

Have you tried whacking the difficulty up?  I found it was at its best when I was only just barely surviving each arena, strafing around like a madman trying to get a health drop and not get killed.  Appreciate that's not for everyone though!

Yeah I tend to get frustrated then :P Might give it a go (not sure I can put it up further without finishing it though).

Can you mission select back to previous levels and keep your weapons/upgrades/collectables (i.e. only a little bit more to get in most of them, dont want to start from scratch)

Re:Runes

Are most of them as rubbish as they appear? e.g. the avoid death once rune?

Other than wanting to level them all up (10/12 so far) I'd never switch from Glory gives Amor, Glory from Further Away and Speed Boost after Glory

Finished this over the weekend, but think I made a mistake playing a big 5-hour session as I did fatigue a little. Still very, very good and a welcome change to recent games I’ve been playing.

Once finished I went back to Arcade mode (tried Ultra Nightmare… my lack of skills were not ready for such brutality), which is good fun, and will probably have another dip into the main missions to find a few more secrets.

Even with the slight fatigue at the end, glory killing demons never got dull, brilliant system to encourage the player to get the most from the game. Dat shotgun too
