Hmmm, read in a couple of places now about twitchy steering with a pad. I don't get why some F1 games make steering so twitchy. I'm sure Martin Brundle has stated many times that actually getting one of these things around a corner takes some effort, so why do devs include steering that feels light as a feather.

More to the point, don't any of the drivers associated with the game try playing with a pad and let them know it feels wrong?

Hype has slipped down a couple of notches.

Will you be imitating that flap thing that goes over the hole in the pedals area? I'm currently using a couple of books for that (Jurassic Park paperback with The Lost World hardbaok on top, literature fans!) and it's far from ideal. Don't have a suitably thin/strong piece of wood either.

No a 100% what you mean but if your on about the red thin piece of steel that lies across the pedals to keep in place yeah i will be replicating that the design i am following is the one for a driving force pro so not extra attachment for gear stick though.

I just watched the Playr review... genuinely worried now for Friday. I was quite capable with GRID using the analog stick, but apparently it's twitchy as fuck with F1... can McSpeed confirm you can change the sensitivity, or if indeed it is playable without a wheel?

I hope its sufficiently playable without a wheel, as playing it with one just isnt possible for me :( ...

DIRT, GRID, both twitchy. It's what codies seem to do, goodness knows why. The smallest breeze near the stick and the car jerks around like it's having a fit.

One "using the pad issue" for me, is that surely your car is going to handle very differently from all the AI drivers around you? Can a human easily re-create their tiny movements on a stick without massive practice.

Ah well!

Video review:

Is that a fair bit of frame rate drop around busy corners?

No 2-player co-op campaign is a bit of a pee take, considering there was a few years to get this right/design/implement it

No split screen is understandable (engine limitations) yet a real shame

Physics don't look overly great in the vid? Just me? Has anyone seen any cars smashing up and flying around in the air yet?

It's going to sell well anyway, it's an F1 game.

Yeah you are right about being able to drive as well as the A.I. It has been a problem in many games where steering feels too light - the A.I cars nicely hold a racing line, but you can't do it yourself.

It is crucial to have smooth handling in a game like this, where tracks can be narrow and you don't want to hit other cars and lose some bodywork.

Surely with the MS wheel being discontinued they wouldn't fuck up something like this when the majority will no doubt play with a pad. Here is hoping for a full selection of sensitivity settings for pad users.

McSpeed we need you on this stat :)

The cons pointed out in the vid are no big deal for me... drivers don't switch teams? They're set teams, what do you expect!

The 4 wheels off track = instant lap invalidation is a bit nasty though, in real life cars run wide but still post a time. I hope it's for qualifying only, imagine getting a stop-go penalty if you've been shunted off the track by someone and the game interprets it as cutting a corner!

Have a look at the Playr thread for some truly LOLworthy footage. Apparently I shouldn't get it if I don't have a wheel though. Pre-order cancelled etc. It's probably hard to drift round corners without the wheel or something, you'll see what I mean.

That Meerman works for Playr...?

:D

I shall also be keeping it hardcore, using a pad. I manage ok on Forza with it so hopefully I'll be able to adapt to the F1 without too much troubles. We'll find out soon enough though I guess :) Maybe Joe could tell us how he's getting on with it on his pad?

I don't doubt it'll be a more fun and involving experience using wheel and pedals, as I think i may have mentioned before, I played extensively GT4 and other PS2 racers using the set up pictured below, but sadly don't have the room for a wheel at the moment.

This is something I really want aswell, over system link ideally. I don't think it's high on any to do lists unfortunately.

There's a potentially fairly major bug being discussed over on the official forums about pit stop release/queuing.

T4RG4 Twitter:

Q: can you confirm that the long pit stop bug is on all playforms and if so will a patch be released to fix it

A: It's all platforms and we are aware of it - I can't yet comment on when/if a patch will be released for this or anything else

How come your MS wheel comes with 3 pedals? Can't believe MS have discontinued the wheel by the way. Most retarded thing ever considering the price of the Fanatec ones in comparison.

Awesome sized screen there by the way :) oh and while the wheelstand pro looks to be a great piece of kit, I reckon you have the more stable solution. I'd certainly prefer a small table like that if I had the space.

They're pedals from a Logitech G25. You have to do a bit of soldering to get them working with the Microsoft wheel but it's worth it as they feel much better. The clutch pedal won't work though, not that F1 needs it.

My mind is wandering to wheels today, is there a good comparison of the options for 360 anywhere? Official vs Fanatec etc

The Fanatec is expensive because it has things like 900 degree steering, 6 speed shifter and a clutch pedal but all these features are useless in an F1 car, to be honest i reckon you'll have just as much fun with the Microsoft wheel. Of course if you want to play Forza, GT5 and Pc sims a lot then the Fanatec is essential imo.
