Turn off ABS! Makes it so much better, seeing the wheels lock up is great as well. Scaaaary.

With a wheel and force feedback, do as you please.

With a pad, BY ALL MEANS DON'T!

Just got this, and a wheel, if any one fancies a blast tonight, add me. Looks great

Add me :) I should be online around 21:30ish.

Have you tried Game at Crown Point? I'm sure I saw some stacked near the door there about a week ago.

You can't get him to shut up then?

There's a speech slider option under the audio options so I presume that would work. Weather info etc is probably quite important though. Unless there's other notifications, I guess there has to be for deaf users?

Depends how desperate you are but if you don't mind an hour or so round trip there seemed to be plenty in the stores (GAME & Gamestation) around me, Manchester area. I'm sure they'll all be gone come the end of the weekend though.

I think the pad works fine, you just have to get used to it. Most of the trouble is on the street circuits such as Monaco and Singapore, I find myself twatting the inside barrier at least once a race, although this might just be me trying to cut it far too fine. I'll play around with the setting tomorrow and see if I can make it even better, and maybe crack out the wheel. Would be interesting to compare times, for most people I'd expect they'd be pretty close, but the best wheel users will be faster than the best pad users, that's just the way it is.

I'll be online around 21:30 :) Who's joining for some hot laps and a few Grand Prix's?

Sorry i got stuck into the career mode, got too engrossed to try multiplayer.

Did the first couple of races, all the proper qualifying sessions.... Brilliant stuff. Tonight's flown by. Started at around 6-ish, first time i checked my watch it was 10:45. Playing on medium with the abs off and racing line off and im finding the difficultly pitched just about right for me. Struggled for and hour or so then claimed a points place in both races(set to 10% length). The sense of speed is awesome, tearing round Melbourne at 200 mph with someones rear wing 3ft in front of you is just ace. Some framerate dips when it gets busy (360) so those used to forza might be a bit disappointed, but nothing game breaking.

First impressions: Top stuff, not a let down in the slightest

@Dave

Seemed not bad to me. Didn't really notice any slowdown when I was playing it, except for maybe Monaco. However, I wasn't really looking for it, but it didn't jump out at me if there was any, so maybe if there is any it's pretty minimal. Performance wise I think it has run pretty well so far. This is on 360 by the way.

whats the frame rate like with a full grid? I have just seen some shocking slowdown on some videos.

Yeah it chuggs a bit but i can't say i noticed it much when actually playing, but it struggles on the replays. I'll be getting the PC version at some point i presume that fairs better.

Righto, time for my thoughts after a couple of races in my career (360, pad, no driving aids, Expert difficulty)

It's... tricky. The car handles really curiously at first, but you get used to it after a while when you realise you need to be really, really delicate with the steering at times. Braking seems okay, but the acceleration/spinning out under acceleration seems wrong to me, as if it's canned rather than worked out on-the-fly. For example, the 5th gear left hander at Bahrain near the end of the lap will have you spinning like a top if you so much as dare put too much throttle in around the apex - in reality there's next to no chance you'd lose a car in 5th at a place like that. As a result, it's somehow curiously more tricky than the sims I have been playing, but in the not-so-great way that there are times when you really, really will not expect what the car does. There are situations you feel should make the car spin that don't, and situations that you feel the car should handle easily where you end up buried into a wall. Once it does go, it properly goes too and there's little chance to save it. Perhaps it's something a wheel will cure.

The AI are okay, although I find that rather than being a consistant challenge over a lap they are particularly weak in some areas and uncatchable in others - at Melbourne, for example, I was so much quicker than anyone through the 5th gear left/right chicane round the back it wasn't true, but the AI were immense around the T3-T4 combo. It kind of balances itself out over the lap, and when fighting with them they're quite fun in the way they joust about and protect their position. They are prone to a bit of over-ambition, mind: had at least 4 people slam into the side of me so far.

This all sounds a bit negative, but there are plenty of positives too: it looks lovely, and the engine noises are great (oh... the race engineer... er... yeah. Another negative - never gives out useful info, blabbers on about who is leading even if you are fighting for 16th in a Virgin... moving on) and the driving itself is actually pretty rewarding, although I am definitely looking forward to testing it with my wheel when I get the PS3 version tomorrow. The career mode is interesting enough, the circuits all seem pretty well realised and driving around in the wet with spray hanging around everywhere is marvellous. It also manages to convey that particular F1 atmosphere nicely too.

There have been plenty of nice little moments along the way as well - zooming around in 19th at Bahrain to come across Kobayashi in the middle of the track pointing the wrong way, di Grassi spinning as soon as the track got slightly damp in FP1 in Melbourne right in front of me, Jarno Trulli being such an uncooperative shit when being lapped ahead of me that he ended up getting disaqualified etc. Oh, and me getting a 5-place grid penalty for baulking Buemi in qualifying. Tee hee.

All-in-all, I'd rate it somewhere about 7 on my first couple of hours. Oh, and folks who are racing the RLLMUK championships and using a pad, book physio appointments now. Trust me, 50% races with these things is going to seriously fuck up a heck of a lot of knuckles.

Worst comes to it I'll do a Virgin and retire with a lap or two left. Or maybe just 'take a rest' in the middle of the race and lose lots of time.

First impressions on 360 version:

After setting up my driver, went straight into a time trial round Spa in the McLaren. Took a while to get used to the handling and power of the beast so I invalidated my first few laps by going wide at La Source/Blanchimont/Bus Stop. Finally managed a clean lap but there's loads more time in there.

I'm using the official steering wheel, Hard mode with all assists off and in cockpit view.

Went into career next - half race distance, short weekend. This means you get 1 hour long practice, 1 10 minute quali and the race. You can speed up time in the practice and qualifying sessions or skip them completely if you like.

Went for Lotus as my first team from a choice of them, HRT and Virgin. Bahrain GP first then. Was 20th after quali and finished 19th in the race, just missing my team target of 18th. Beat Jarno though so all good.

During the race I was impressed by the way you can feel the tyres going off through the stints. Started on options then went onto primes after my stop - could definately feel the difference in grip between tyres and going out on cold primes after the stop was pretty hairy. I think I span 3 times during the race, riding the curbs was a bit of a lottery with the setup I had (default middle setup - average speed and downforce, neutral handling).

The AI seem decent, if a little twitchy at times. They will definately defend their positions. Not sure if hard is the right level for me yet, may have to switch to expert.

Technically the graphics are good. Frame rate was a little choppy, but I got used to it and didn't see it after a while.

Penalties didn't seem overly harsh as some people have been saying and my pit stop was fine!

i just read on the codemasters websites that the slicks are faster than wets/inters on a wet track? thats a bit bonkers.

Hopefully it's just more misinformation/noise.

The problem with their forum (and EA's and no doubt most forums of that ilk) is sorting out the screaming from the opinions that actually offer something worthwhile. I quite enjoy the build up to a release when the insane ones are content with their smiley faces but as soon as the game's released they're posting within 5mins about retuning the game. One guy posted a thread that had an huge list of faults that he'd 'read about' in various places and it was basically "if this is broken FIX IT!" I realise I should stop reading but until the game is in my hands, it feeds me.

Cheers for the impressions Sharky. Post here doesn't come until 2pm most days...
