I have to admit my expectations keep lowering with every preview I read. I was hoping for something getting close to GP4 - but clearly it isn't going to be.

I know that is hoping for too much, but the devs keep boasting about how it might be the best F1 game ever made, and the people playing it are saying something quite different.

Won't stop me enjoying it. But I'm really disappointed that the sim side of it doesn't seem to be as hardcore as I had hoped.

It feels like it to me, it really does. I've only just started to play, but with all the assists turned off it's pretty unforgiving. If you make a mistake it does punish you for it. It certainly doesn't feel arcadey. I haven't been following opinion on other forums, but I've heard it's getting some criticism. What aspects of the game could be more 'hardcore' do you think?

Well, it was reading about the tyre issue, the fact that damage so far doesn't seem to affect handling too much from what I have seen.

I'm hoping to start a race and if I make a mistake on the first corner that is bad enough, I could be out altogether. Of course I've yet to hear of things like engines blowing etc, which I'm also hoping will be in there. I want it to have the same engine rules, and the possibility (however slim) that I could use my allocation and then be penalised places for using extras.

All nitpicking though to be fair :)

You can go out at the first corner. Just make sure damage is set to realistic and not just visual.

Tyre and engine rules are in, too.

Just got my version.

It plays slightly better then on my system on the PC (to be fair, the wheel rumble and FFB are slightly different).

Note that many sharp corners can be dealt with in second gear - going to first instead will increase spin risk as you try and keep up with the pack.

Also, try to just coast (little or no gas) over cambers. Bahrain has one in particular thats quite nasty.

Are engine failures in it?

I used to love it in F1 97 when puffs of smoke would start to come from the engine. Running in first with a 12 second lead, and just 4 laps to go and having to coax the car round not pushing too hard as the engine would go pop. It had a great way of making you feel just how hard you could push with a failing engine, and it was agony to be overtaken near the end as you couldn't push too hard. Sometimes you did of course and prayed the engine wouldn't give out just to hold the position. Very tense and very enjoyable.

No engine failures for the player but the AI suffer them. Their reasoning was that they wanted to have engine failures based on engine wear and the players driving rather than just be random but they didn't have time to implement it.

I think your engines still 'wear', you'll lose performance and you have to change them but they just won't fail completely.

I get the feeling that racing these cars is going to be similar (ish) to the race we did on Forza 3 where we drove Holden Commodores round maple Valley. That was a beast of a car to drive, but once you got used to the car, knew where the grip was, and where to completely lift off the throttle, then it was a fantastic experience. I can't wait until tomorrow!!

These are slightly easier IMO, but its a bit annoying to lose that sense of tactile road grip. You can feel the road, but its not as good.

Woo, finally got mine!

They were right about getting a steering wheel. The problem is that the deadzone for both steering and accelerating/braking is huge on the pad, and you can't calibrate it like with the wheel. This means that for sharp corners it's more often than not a case of running right through or oversteering. And on the long corners you constantly have to twitch the thing, not knowing if the next constant adjustment will take you into a spin or not.

On the plus side, I got disqualified from the practice session (after getting 2 5 place grid drops) for driving backwards and crashing into Alonso (backwards) respectively.

watching someone launch out of the tunnel exit chicane at Monaco at over 100 mph into a wall head on, only to have wing damage is stupid.

Please tell me the wheels fly off?

The wheels fly/come off. I'm guessing the video you saw was set to 'cosmetic' damage.

Just doing some TT, I'm currently on my 25th consecutive 'invalid lap' of Silverstone and I'm loving it.

Bloody postman. Waited in all morning as I ordered signed for, and he arrives five minutes ago and just plops it through the (communal) letterbox and has left the little sticker thing on it. I'm thinking bad thoughts now about denying its arrival

7th place on Medium AI on Monza with a Virgin. Not bad for a first race? I was just chuffed I didn't spin once.

One weird thing is the pit limiter, is it just a one off thing (just before you reach the lines), because no matter how many times I bash B once activated it doesn't switch off again.. .which is what you would expect.
