I'm still listening to stuff from 2006-07 mostly but of the year so far my favourites are:

Sebastien Tellier - Sexuality

Cut Copy - In Ghost Colours

Zeigeist - The Jade Motel

The Roots - Rising Down

Biggest disappointment? Has to be Kelley Polar - really haven't taken to it at all.

Most looking forward to? New Juan Maclean LP.

7. The Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra & Tra-La-La Band - 13 Blues for Thirteen Moons - My favourite Silver Mt. Zion, a haunting album.

Holy shit! I love Silver Mt. Zion - they've been quiet for so long I gave up on a new album. I had no idea this was out.

Thank you!

Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend - Suprised no one else has listed this yet (have they?) One of the most hyped albums of the year so far, partly down to the Pitchfork effect and a BBC 'sounds of 2008' poll listing them both favourably. If you haven't heard anything about it it's this sort of Afrobeat/pop combination, like Los Compesinos it does have quite 'literate' lyrics that might be a bit sweet for your tastes sometimes but the music is brilliantly catchy and immediate, you'll either get it on a first listen or not.

I have no idea why these guys are taking off. I really don't get it. That video is quite charming, though. Shame about the music.

4. Sun Kil Moon - April - If you ever have to sit for hours in a train, this is the album to pick. Quite long, but in the right circumstances anything you ever wanted.

Ooh! Didn't know they (he, even) had a new album out. Will have to pick it up. Cheers. :o

The Mae Shi - HLLLYH

My friend knows them and got them over to play in the town.. they seemed okay, if a little try-too-hard to be edgey and cool.. but on your recommendation, I'll attempt to track some mp3s down!

Cheers for all the recommendations.. this is going to take a while.

I saw them at the weekend and thought that they were supremely entertaining, but I was expecting an element of chaos rather than a normal show.

is probably their best track, the other tracks are little more spazzy but infused with a very pop sensibility (which has pissed off several of their older fans).

Guest CornerUnitSofa

Portishead - Third

The Fall - Imperial Wax Solvent

British Sea Power - Do You Like Rock Music?

The Breeders - Mountain Battles

Clinic - Do It!

Although, those are the only five new albums I've heard all year, so it's all a bit moot.

It's fantastic. Nights Of Passed Over (his lyric book) has been reissued in a limited run with a CD of live / unreleased / rare versions of songs, too.

I love the fact that I have no idea who half of these bands are. I never realised I was quite so set in my ways.

Anyway, big-ups for the Nick Cave, dEUS, Raconteurs and Supergrass albums from me.

Was the Gutter Twins album this year? If it was, that, too.

I'd second it, it's my album of the year so far. One of those lovely, timeless summer albums. Like the Is This It? meets Graceland. I predict it will soundtrack many a BBQ this year.

I've seen the Mae Shi live twice this year and they were absolutely fantastic on both occasions. Did you see them on the DiS tour with Johnny Foreigner?

There's nothing that's grabbed me this year and I've listened to about half the albums mentioned in this thread, aside from Weezer - Red Album which hasn't leaked in full yet. Less Than Jake - GNV FLA and The Hold Steady - Stay Positive both being out soon will probably change that though...

Meshuggah – Obzen

The Gutter Twins – Saturnalia. Mark Lanegan from Screaming Trees and Greg Dulli from Afghan Whigs. What on earth more do you want?

Must admit the new Portishead one really surprised me. Very good stuff, and not a boring rehash of all their old stuff.

I'm sure the new Mudhoney and Opeth albums will be right up there, too.
