Kruger, Waltz & Rust Joining Inglorious Bastards

Inglorious Bastards writer/director Quentin Tarantino has cast actors Diane Kruger, Christoph Waltz and Paul Rust in the Weinstein Co./Universal drama.

They join Brad Pitt, Eli Roth, Mike Myers, Michael Fassbender, B.J. Novak and Samm Levine.

Kruger ("National Treasure" films) plays German actress Bridget Von Hammersmark, who figures prominently in a plot to sabotage the Nazis. It is a role for which Nastassja Kinski was first mentioned.

Waltz, who is best known in Germany for his television work, has landed the role of Col. Hans Landa, who is the primary antagonist.

The film begins production Oct. 13 in Germany.

The Hollywood Reporter says that German star Til Schweiger (King Arthur, Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life) has also landed a role in Quentin Tarantino's World War II movie Inglorious Bastards.

The Universal/Weinstein Co. feature revolves around a French girl's revenge on the Nazis and also follows a band of American Nazi killers. Both story lines eventually converge.

Diane Kruger will portray the part of a glamorous German actress who ends up helping the Nazi hunters infiltrate a movie premiere.

Schweiger will play a member of the Nazi killer team, headed by Brad Pitt's character, Lt. Aldo Raine.

Others in the cast include Christoph Waltz, Daniel Bruhl, Eli Roth, Mike Myers, Michael Fassbender, B.J. Novak, Samm Levine and Paul Rust.

The film starts shooting in Germany on October 13.

Has Quentin Tarantino cast the one last major unoccupied role in his WWII epic INGLORIOUS BASTARDS? Dark Horizons is reporting that Tarantino has cast Melanie Laurent, who you might remember from...well, nothing (unless, of course, you're a student of French cinema). Laurent would play Shoshana Dreyfus, a young Jewish women who flees to Paris where she runs a movie theater. With Brad Pitt and Christoph Waltz set as Aldo Raine and Hans Landa, Dreyfus was the last significant role to be cast.

It's probably the most pivotal in the movie, hence Tarantino taking his time to find the right actress. With the film pretty much all cast up (Eli Roth, Mike Myers, Samm Levine, Diane Kruger and BJ Novak also co-star), production is set to begin on October 13 in Germany. No release date has been set for the Universal/Weinstein film but Tarantino announced that he expects to bring the film to next year's Cannes Film Festival.

Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds (sic) began principal photography last week on location in Germany. The ensemble cast of Inglourious Basterds includes Brad Pitt, Diane Kruger, Mélanie Laurent, Christoph Waltz, Daniel Brühl, Eli Roth, Samm Levine, B.J. Novak, Til Schweiger, Gedeon Burkhard, Paul Rust, Michael Bacall, Omar Doom, Sylvester Groth, Julie Dreyfus, Jacky Ido, August Diehl, Martin Wuttke, Richard Sammel, Christian Berkel, Sönke Möhring, Michael Fassbender, Mike Myers, Rod Taylor, Denis Menochet and Cloris Leachman.

Inglourious Basterds reunites Tarantino with Academy Award-nominated editor Sally Menke, Academy Award-winning director of photography Bob Richardson, and production designer David Wasco. Joining Tarantino for the first time is Academy Award-nominated costume designer Anna Sheppard.

Academy Award-nominee Lawrence Bender is producing Inglourious Basterds. Erica Steinberg and Lloyd Phillips, and Bob and Harvey Weinstein are the film's executive producers. The co-producers are Charlie Woebcken, Christoph Fisser and Henning Molfenter. Pilar Savone is the associate producer.

The Weinstein Company and Universal Pictures, through its newly formed International Studio, are co-financing and co-presenting the film with TWC handling domestic distribution and Universal handling international distribution. The two companies are partners on the project.

Zehnte Babelsberg Film, a subsidiary of Studio Babelsberg AG, is producing Inglourious Basterds. The film will shoot at Studio Babelsberg as well as in Berlin, Saxony and Paris.

Inglourious Basterds begins in German-occupied France, where Shosanna Dreyfus (Mélanie Laurent) witnesses the execution of her family at the hand of Nazi Colonel Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz). Shosanna narrowly escapes and flees to Paris, where she forges a new identity as the owner and operator of a cinema.

Elsewhere in Europe, Lieutenant Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) organizes a group of Jewish soldiers to engage in targeted acts of retribution. Known to their enemy as "The Basterds," Raine's squad joins German actress and undercover agent Bridget Von Hammersmark (Diane Kruger) on a mission to take down the leaders of The Third Reich. Fates converge under a cinema marquee, where Shosanna is poised to carry out a revenge plan of her own...

Samuel L Jackson and Maggie Cheung have joined the cast.

Just yesterday it was announced that Samuel L Jackson had been cast as Sho’nuff in a remake of The Last Dragon. Now, The Playlist has learned that Jackson will reteam with Quentin Tarantino in his WWII film Inglourious Basterds. Jackson, who was featured in Tarantino’s Kill Bill: Volume 2, Jackie Brown and Pulp Fiction, will provide his voice for the narration which is sporadicly used throughout the film.

Also, Chinese actress Maggie Cheung has been cast as Madame Mimieux, “the French matron of the Cinematheque that takes in the protagonist Shosanna (Melanie Laurent) when she is homeless and being sought by the Nazis.” Cheung has appeared in over 70 films, and was the first Asian actress to win a prize at the Cannes Film Festival (for Clean in 2004), among her numerous other awards (including five Hong Kong Film Awards).

Will Quentin Tarantino's rush to Cannes cost him a completely original orchestral score from Ennio Morricone? According to the maestro himself, it's a distinct possibility.

Speaking to Variety, the eighty-year-old Morricone cautioned that, while he has accepted Tarantino's offer to score the World War II epic, he is concerned that the three-month, February-to-April window between the completion of principal photography and the April delivery to the Cannes Film Festival won't leave him enough time to finish his work. Per Morricone, "Either I start working on it before he stops shooting - after we discuss it together - or I just can't do it." (Couldn't he get an extra two weeks stretching into May? Movies cut it close at Cannes all the time. Just ask Wong Kar-Wai!)

If it comes to this, Morricone might just contribute "a couple of tracks", which means Tarantino would fill out the rest of the film with old, lesser-known Morricone cues? Given the composer's prolific past, that shouldn't be too difficult. There are lots of rotten movies (particularly from the 1970s) sporting classic Morricone scores.

Finally, CHUD's Russ Fischer informs me (via the The Quentin Tarantino Archives), that Eli Roth is taking a break from his baseball-bat-wielding duties as "The Bear Jew" to direct "Nation's Pride", the film-within-a-film starring Daniel Brühl as a heroic Nazi sniper. Though it's all in jest, I'm sure it's still a little... odd to call the shots on a Nazi propaganda movie.

That late in August isn't a good place to be as far as release dates go...

The Weinstein Company has announced that Quentin Tarantino's sixth movie Inglourious Basterds (the title is spelled as such by the studio and Tarantino), a WWII film starring Brad Pitt, Diane Kruger and Christoph Waltz, will be released on August 21, 2009.

Co-financed by The Weinstein Company with Univeral Pictures, the late summer release will put the movie up against New Line's Final Destination: Death Trip 3D and the comedy The Goods: The Don Ready Story.

Inglourious Basterds begins in German-occupied France, where Shosanna Dreyfus (Mélanie Laurent) witnesses the execution of her family at the hand of Nazi Colonel Hans Landa (Waltz). Shosanna narrowly escapes and flees to Paris, where she forges a new identity as the owner and operator of a cinema.

Three things are certain:

1. It's gonna be great

2. Loads of people will hate it and make a big deal about hating it

3. I will love it

Hehe thats how I feel too! ;)

And I couldn't care less that loads of people will hate it.

During the last Cannes Film Festival, director Quentin Tarantino promised to return in 2009 with a finished copy of his World War II film "Inglourious Basterds."

According to Variety, Tarantino will keep his promise and is already getting ready to step into the editing room to prepare "Basterds" for its Cannes premiere in May before releasing in theaters on August 21st.

The site added that the film will consist of five chapters:

Chapter One: Once Upon a Time in Nazi Occupied France

Chapter Two: Inglourious Basterds

Chapter Three: German Night in Paris (filmed in "French New Wave Black and White")

Chapter Four: Operation Kino

Chapter Five: Revenge of the Giant Face
