Call of Duty: World at War

After reading people's initial impressions on the game and what they liked/ disliked, I became more intrigued - why people didn't like the addition of dogs for instance, or how the guns felt in game, compared to those in COD4 etc. How the three MP maps are and whether Treyarch actually did put more thought into this game than the dire COD3 or not.

Since the only real way to find this out is by myself, I politely asked for a beta code if anyone had one spare but yet you and some other monkeys decide to lambast people and effectively tell them to fuck off elsewhere - what people ask is relevant and not everyone 'begs'.

Not everyone will read requests elsewhere and most probably won't. Those offering in this thread have offered to those (with thanks) in here so what is the problem exactly?

Is it really so much to ask? If you don't ask you don't get and so why was my post harmful to twits like you Charles? It only takes a split second so skip something uninteresting to you so stop making this thing to be bigger than it really needs to be.

I kinda liked the dog idea. I just think the games a little like a fan-made cod4 mod.

And as interesting as world war II is (and it is interesting from a studying point of view) I prefer the modern weapon sets and environments of COD4 (although truth be told me and COD4 don't see eye to eye).

Every day thousands of gamers go betaless. For only one code a month you could help posters like Pootle UK.

Ah yes, but give a man a Beta and he can play COD BETAS for a day. Embarass a man into getting off his arse and being more proactive when it comes to acquiring betas and he shall play COD Betas for a lifetime.

And perhaps, sell them on Ebay too.

I was going to come in and post about being conflicted about the beta, but now that I actually think about it I realize that every positive point I was going to credit it with was an invention that ought better be ascribed to the previous game. The weapon set is pretty baffling in term of balance (the bolt action rifles especially being slow-firing Thompsons), the maps are sort of ok but they - for want of a better word - 'flow' really strangely.

It's not bad by any means, but the better facets of CoD4 that it incorporates fall into the category of "seen it" at best and that of "weird" at worst: special forces operatives with laser-sighted, gleaming chrome weapons made a sort of sense, but filthy stragglers sprinting around Stalingrad with tricked-out shooters is a very odd and incongruous sight.

This is trolling. I bet you're the kinda guys that 'beg' for 48hr Live codes.

Anyways thanks to the other chaps who posted in between these shit ones to give their impressions. How does the game compare with COD2 for instance? (I say COD2 since it's WWII set) I mean the maps and gameplay in that weren't bad - sure the series has moved on a little from that but as someone once said on here, it's still pretty much run and gun no?

Cheers!

The pure, stripped back basics of the Beta are:

• Its pretty much plays like COD4 in some respects but feels less refined in that the guns have a more 'older' feel to them. I find the game darker and moody compared to COD4 and sets the scene well for a gritty WW2 setting.

• IMO its NOT as good as COD4 so far. Sure the full game may suprise but I doubt it. The guns dont seem as accurate or as powerful (i feel like I have to pump more bullets into someone to get a kill compared to COD4).

• The dogs are a cool feature but like said, they are exacuted poorly in the game. I feel that they sort of jump about to much and dont fill me with terror. A good melee attack normally sort them best as its detracts from shooting on the radar and is near 99% more cahnce of killing them. The doogs also are very easy to rake up a decent kill streak compared to the helicopeter. Last nite, on my second go, I won my Free For All 75 points clear and a 22 kill streak.

• You can get INTO tanks. There slow to Move, reload and trun and I dont like them. There are PERKS that can make them behave better if you like them though.

• The Mortar strike is cool. Feels 'realistc' compared to the airstrikes in COD4 that felt a bit poor IMO.

• Some guns (like the single bolt rifles) seem VERY poor in the game. Slow to reload and when direct hited still didnt kill someone, who then turns round, and kills you in the time it takes to reload the gun!! Not good!

• Menu and stuff is layed out in the same way to COD 4 so all is the same with a new look. Prefer COD4 look but its not bad.

• Levels seem larger and more spread out with more knooks and cranies to dot about in. The added players over COD4 10 is goo with the larger levels but spoiled by the fact that people are respawned rignt next to you after a kill which is a BIG worry in my eyes as it ruins the game!

Would I still buy it!?

YES. but I would NOT trade COD4 for it. I can see this doing ok but I cant see people lossing interest in COD4 for this. COD4 is just a perfect game IMO. I have played COD4 for over 450 hours online and on level 9 prestige (I dont want to be a gold cross just to not look a noob! hahaha ) and I cant see this playing as fine as it.

But good game, shame COD4 is better!

So is it a case of Treyarch trying to offer more than COD4 by packing it with all sorts of stuff (dogs, tanks, vehicles, etc) and falling somewhat short? It seems from your views that no one new addition to this franchise has been implemented well - least not well enough to at least match the greatness of COD4 in terms of MP.

It's a reskinned CoD4, to an almost ridiculous extent. Gas grenades are stun grenades, flares are almost flashes, grenades are grenades. The first gun you use is a G3. The Thompson is a cross between a Scorpion and an Uzi. The german alternative pretty much is an MP5. The Bar is an RPD. Apetures are red-dot scopes. Telescopic sights are ACOGs. Most of the perks are identical. I could go on.

The balance could well be messed up in the long run. I could be wrong, but putting a grip on a BAR seems to have no ill-effect at all. If this is the case, the perfect balancing of CoD4, (having a grip removes a perk in that), is thrown out the window somewhat. I spotted a reconnaissance perk, there wasn't a description but it looked to involve the radar. It's unlocked at a high level. If it gives radar then that's frankly a stupid perk and throws all balance out of the window. The new re-pinning grenade perk should be great in objective games, though.

I like the maps other than the night time one so far (down to it being night time more than anything else, although a little bit because of the overly cluttered feel), and I don't follow everyone saying they're more open or there's a lack of cover. Don't see that at all. Forgotten Creek? That's far more open than Roundhouse or whatever the tank one is called. You can be damn sneaky on that map, I love it so far. Cover everywhere.

Someone above mentioned regional filtering. I can't see it - was it removed? A joke? I'll find the post later if no one knows.

I've noticed that the menus don't look as 'clean' as Cod4, as if they're a lower resolution. Which is ironic because while Cod4 always had rubbish, blurry loading screens for the maps in this they're much improved, but the menu's are like a step backwards.

Maybe the Reconnaissance perk is the new equivalent of the UAV Jammer?

When people say the maps are 'too open' they don't mean in the sense that there's no cover, it's because there's no 'flow' to them, no real sense of direction. They're too aimless.

CoD4's loading screens aren't blurry. Your TV must be shit!

Or maybe my TV's too fucking good and they're just not high res enough? How 'bout 'dat muthafucka!

Seriously though, they've been using dodgy screenshots for the loading screens in Cod4 since the beta.

Well I just plainly disagree then. I've learnt them quickly and I know where I'm going all the time. I'm not saying that in a show offy way, I'm saying they seem well designed so far. I'd put all three as better than Bog, China Town, Countdown, Wet Work and possibly Vacant at the mo. For TDM anyway.

I sat open mouthed staring at the Crossfire loading screen when we first got our HDTV. Maybe you were drunk.

If it was your first HDTV you could have been looking at 25k gif of Dave Benson Phillips and you'd have still have creamed your sofa.

You'll get no disagreeal from me there, because they are by far the the worst Cod4 maps. I'd say the Pagoda-based one is about on par with those (it's rubbish) and the other two are slightly better. The difference is that we got given some of the very best maps in the Cod4 beta, whereas I'm reliably 'informed' that the maps in the full version of this don't get any better than these, and there's nothing here even close to the standard of the best Cod4 maps.

Yes. I agree. the font seems squished down and it looks a little out-of-focus which makes it harder to read than the clean COD4 menus.

Sorry to drag this out, but aside from those maps I mentioned, I love every other map on CoD4. If they can average out around this quality I'll be pretty chuffed. I'm not trying to be an argumentative prick, honestly, it's just that I'm enjoying these maps.

The thing is, I don't think a fun CoD map needs anything like the consideration of, say, a Halo one. As long as it's not too symmetrical, it's not featureless and it always has alternative escape routes from most situations (Bog, Countdown and Wet Work, I'm looking at you), then it's good enough for me.

Aces. If there's a (working) function that guarantees you regional/four bar connections every game, then I may well never play CoD4 again. (I will really, I was just being dramatic, it'll be MASSIVE for most people if it works.)
