Call of Duty: World at War

Maybe it will be more fun on an easier difficulty level, I have been playing it on veteran.

To it's credit it does look nice in places but thats a given as COD4 looked fantastic. It's just a better looking COD3 pretty much.

I'm not getting this game as the multiplayer just feels second rate compared to 4, but CoD4's single player was a miserable experience on Veteran too, I thought.

What a miserable game this is.

Remember those really shit parts of call of duty three where you are funneled through trenches and the enemy randomly pops up at the edges and kills you? Remember how frustrating it was and how everybody hated those sections? Well, after the quite frankly abysmal first level at least half of this fucking game is indeed running around trenches on some Japanese island getting shot. That is until you have the spawns memorised. ;)

What a waste of a fucking great game engine.

Avoid.

In the wrapper it stays! I appreciate that trenches do funnel you, I just despise them in these kind of games.

Thanks Skeez I will be exchanging this for the awesome looking Left FOR Dead.

wouldnt this just spoil the game, if its allowed in multiplayer.

The interesting strategy that you can use in conjunction with the Suicide King cheat is affectionately called “the lawnmower” by the team at Treyarch. How it works is, one guy runs out into the action, gets himself downed, then unloads his grenade rounds into everything around him. Once he runs out, his co-op homey can snipe him from safety, reviving him on the spot. Point guy now gets knocked down again, unloads explodo-rounds, gets revived again and so on and so on. Clever stuff that the testers discovered on their own.

So yeah, well presented...Trey have taken lots of pointers from COD4.

The first level

Semper Fi

a test level of course, lovely cinematics as to be expected, but as the enemy (on Normal difficulty BTW) spin round in cirlces and don't shoot at me while I'm 3ft in front of them and the way I can walk through the base of a solid metal lookout tower but for some reason cannot enter some wooden huts that appear accessible signs are not good...oh Treyarch...if you've learned anything from COD 4 you should know the first 10 mins should ooze perfection. Hmmm...pretty unimpressed.

Onto level 2

nice opening and beach landing

...it looks like its running on a different machine from the famous COD2 beach landings that wowed us in '05...grfx have come along way. The baron war-torn wasteland with its blitzed palm trees looks devastating...now let's see what this battles offers...

Oh shit, I forgot to cancel my pre-order too. Will GAME do a straight swap in-store for something good?

If it's still sealed you can just get a full refund. I'm in the same boat, ordered when those £3 off vouchers were flying about, forgot to cancel after being disappointed by the beta.

I've played through up to about mission 5 on hardened.

It's ok, much like the multiplayer feels like COD4 but ever so slightly off the single player is the same, better than COD3 but worse than COD's 2+4 IMO. It just doesn't feel as polished and enjoyable as COD4.

One thing that is really annoying so far is that they've not made much effort to realistically edge off the play-area. There are loads of small walls and hills that you can't jump over, where you'll come across an identical looking wall later one that you can. I've died a number of times trying to go somewhere that looks accessible but isn't.

I agree with Skeeez comments about trenches too, and random death from above.

On the plus side the Flamethrower is fun. And there is a good

sniper

level that is very similar to

the pripyat level from COD4

.

So I'm on the first Russian level...and once again we've got a scene for scene snooze-inducing 'Enemy At The Gates' scenario that's trying to be the Chernobyl level in COD4 but without the tension.

This game's got a review score of 6 or 7 (if lucky) written all over it so far from a story perspective. Shame, I really wanted to like it but it's all so sloppy and unoriginal.

Like you Fusty I just so wanted this to be awesome.

I can't let WWII games go without giving them a try, but this is sounding to be so generic and not the groundbreaking game the previews and trailers led us to believe it was. The COD4 of WWII shooters.

If it's really linear and the split direction and outcomes aren't really game enhancing I am not going to bother.

That's the bit i was referring to as good ;) I quite enjoyed that level as it was a change of pace but yeah, it was just a crapper copy of a similar level from COD4.

It just shows there's a innate knack to games/level design and IW have it, and Treyarch don't. Virtually everything from COD4 is here but with less finesse and refinement. The levels often just kind of end (much like in resistance TFOM) and the jumping from location to location is more jarring than COD4. I've got stuck on scenery a few times. The range of weaponry is a bit boring and samey. The soundtrack consists of heavy metal (in a WW2 games WTF!!). The maps are uninspiring. and more things I can't be arsed to type.

That said I am still enjoying it if taken on face value, but it can't help but be compared to COD4 and it falls massively short on that front. That and I'm bit bored of WW2 shooters.

That's the problem with games like this, tbh. QOS suffered from it as well, these developers have an excellent engine at their disposal, but simply don't know what to do with it.

90% of my problem with the BETA was that the maps were uninspiring.

Zombie Mode? Forget it, L4D will satisfy that urge and from what I've played so far, has the tools to keep me engrossed for some time.

Will Treyarch ever make a decent game? They can't even copy a great game (COD4) properly!

Obviously it's a crap mag, but this got a 10 in PSW (IIRC), and the strapline of the mag says it's better than COD4. Not read the review, mind.

Got that magazine today, seemed like the Editor (was the guy who reviewed it) absolutely loved it and found it very exciting and much better than COD4. He mentioned how much he liked the perks in it and thought that some of them were better than COD4 though I can't remember offhand which ones he mentioned. He didn't really talk about the online multiplayer that much at all though I suppose that's a given since it's a lot harder to test everything with not that many people playing it. He did applaud Treyarch for the lots of creative ways they used co-op and thought it was a great addition to the series and gave it a lot more depth. He mentioned 4 player split screen though it didn't specifically say if it was for the online normal multiplayer or specifically the co-op, here's hoping it is both.

He also mentioned how fun he thought the setpieces were and how different they were. With the japanese levels being more new with the tactics that they use with the russian levels being a throwback to the old call of duty. It was also said it was very polished and a lot better than COD3's safe and sound approach with this being at times a lot more dramatic and shocking, especially with the use of gore adding to the 'visceral' feel.

I'm actually quite looking forward to this, whilst the game may be crap I sometimes get the feeling that people want to shit on Treyarch just because they've been so average in the past and not give them a fair chance, which of course is understandable as they've made some fucking shockers in their time. This could well be the case but I love the COD series so am going to give it a chance anyway.
