Call of Duty: World at War

Man, the blood and bullet damage looks pretty damn good.

Yeah, these sorts of games really need some damage decals and blood. Make me believe i'm really shooting someone.

The flame effects look superb as well.

But all the concerns about the same old mechanics remain, though.

That said, I like the look, graphics, animation and so on. And it sounds like it's going to be really intense and grim, from the preview i've read.

Man, the blood and bullet damage looks pretty damn good. Pre-ordered this today at GAME, gonna have to do it on the website though, I want the beta-key. But I don't want to pay now. Urgh.

GAME won't take the funds until the game ships.

I have never seen an exit wound look as good in any cod game before.

not sure i agree. Cod4 has incredible blood decals. really subtle yet utterly convincing. This looks a step too far, a bit too videogamey. One of the things I really love about cod4 is its gritty understated realism. When you see a teammate run into a building and then see a bunch of shadows moving around, some flashes of gunfire and then just some brains hit a wall. It still blows me away now.

Whilst Cod4 can be effective it's still very neutered though, blood decals are rare and the splashes at impact are minimal. I think Rainbow Six Vegas did it best myself, the deaths looked weighty and violent without ever being gory - mostly down to some unusually fantastic ragdoll work.

Agreed, YellowSamuel. It was crucial that shooting somebody down in a hail of bullets was believable for a game like RSV, and do they indeed crumple and drop in the a very satisfying manner.

I would welcome a step up from COD4, to be honest.

It looks great so far. I'd like to see more of the Pacific stuff though. The art direction of the Russian bits is so dark and brooding I think I'm going to get depressed playing them. I hope the Pacific levels will be more like the Green Hill Zone. It's all about the 4 player co-op though.

The bullet hits in COD4 looked like squibs from films - they had that dusty, spray-ey look. That's my favoured approach to be honest, I don't really know what real bullet wounds look like and I don't want to know either to be honest. I'd rather a game went for that look than the gore-fest of something like Soldier of Fortune.

Yea I'm with Sam too.

If you look at a lot of movies they use somewhat "unrealistic" effects to make it more in your face. A lot of videogames miss that.

Pushing it and adding particles and shit flying around is all good - makes it more dynamic and intense.

I was actually looking forward to this despite my better judgment, but having watched those co-op trailers I've completely lost interest, dull looking visuals and gameplay and eergh those horrible world war II weapons. Horrible horrible horrible.

I found the thing about choosing to shoot surrendered and injured soldiers interesting. Not in a ghoulish way, but it's an interesting direction. The guy in one video seemed to suggest this happens a few times in the game. I wonder if they'll include things like Japanese soldiers pretending to surrender and then setting off a grenade as happened in real life. It could make you question your approach to these situations, if you've been letting the enemy live up until that point, you might become more trigger happy next time the white flag is flown.

What's the deal with the Russian/Japanese split? Are they just aping CoD4's intertwined US Marine/SAS storyline thing, and if so I wonder how they're going to link them together? Not that I'd mind too much if there's nothing at all connecting them and you just flit back and forth between them. What's more important is are we going to be able to use a katana as a melee weapon?
