I don't play my Wii yet I don't get rid of it. Anyone else?

you tireless extremes of a meaningless bar

That's fucking beautiful man.

Anyone else noticed that the only people who use the word 'fanboy' in t'internet arguments are quite transparently fanboys themselves?

It's threads like this that made me leave Gamesradar, I didn't think we did this sort of stuff on here. I don't go in the sales thread often, admittedly.

I don't think it is a bad thing that we can discuss our issues with the various consoles and people will always disagree. Even the OP said that although they hadn't played on the Wii for a while that they were not about to sell it either.

Healthy discussion about what might be/is perceievd to be/is wrong with our beloved industry is... well... healthy!

I'm exactly like the OP but it does occasionally get used and I guess unlike the PS3 (which I sold after a few months sitting dormant) I don't feel it cost me so much that it's a pisstake for it to sit unused - plus I have great sessions of SSBB with the weeman.

But somewhere at the back of my mind I wonder if I shouldn't cash in and sell it and pick up another ps3 even though there's nowt I want to play on that either...... (having said that wipeoutHD cometh!)

I had a good 6 or 7 hours with Mario Kart just last weekend.

Amaze :(

Indeed. Mario Kart is bloody brilliant.

Add in the crushing disappointment that was PES 2008 on the 360, compared to the excellent effort that is PES 2008 on Wii and Nintendo's little machine has surprised me by becoming my on-line console of choice! Personally, I never expected that when I got it.

What I do find funny is how many people on here seem to sell consoles and then purchase them again a few months later. Totally bizarre. I haven't used my 360 for anything other than playing DVDs (which is does horribly because of the NOISE IT MAKES) but I haven't raced out to sell it. Just seems a bit odd to me, I suppose.

These consoles are worth a couple of hundred quid and a lot of people dont have that much spare cash laying around so it seems a bit wasteful to have one sat there doing nothing when the money could be used elsewhere. I flogged my PS3 back at Xmas, it was a 60GB BC one and ended up selling for almost £500! More than I originally paid for it. I used that money to repair my car at the time but now several month later I'm back on track moneywise so just bought another today.

I must add I sorely underestimated how small an upgrade over the cube it really was. It's a real mess that they aimed so low, but even then why so many titles actually appear graphically worse than cube titles is beyond me.

Well Nintendo decided first and foremost that it was important the console be small and quiet. So that limited the tech that could be used.

I guess that 95% of Wii owners would think those priorities are sound. Can you imaging it selling like it has if it was the size of a small PC and made noise like a quad-core server?

Nonsense.

A PowerPC of the sort they've used could easily be doubled before that becomes a problem, and cheap in the sort of numbers Nintendo are requiring. (Apple's recent PASemi acquisition specialised in exactly this sort of thing). Anyway these days it's the graphics chip, which seems to be severely below par (and there were fairly well hated graphics bottlenecks on the cube). Why they couldn't have made it at least 720p capable is beyond me. As it is the iPhone really isn't that far behind it, which is a ridiculous situation.

The thing is I doubt Nintendo expected it to be this successful, so they made it to still be profitable at half the price it is now and with a fraction of units made.

It's unusual to get more money than you paid, though, especially for the games.

you've got a point here Escape... In my opinion, the Wii opens up the opportunity to also make intelligent 'casual' games for older folks. Point'n'Clicks fall into this category. I'm still amazed at why Lucasarts haven't done anything here.... a few companies have, there's that Agatha Christie game that seems to be a bit mediocre unfortunately. I love a good point'n'click - the original Broken Sword being the last of its type (which was ace on the GBA)

Apparently Tunguska is pretty good on the Wii. IMO, Eternal Darkness on the cube was one of these types of games as well.

I don't mind ports... I don't have a PC to play games on.

I do agree with you, there's a whole bunch of genres that are basically dying out. I do reckon though that the Wii is probably the best console fit for them, not just because of the pointer, but because of the audience. I'd like to to see more strategy games... more adventure games... more games that buck the trend a bit. In the Alone in the Dark thread, I mentioned that I'd love to see a game done in the time of the first one. Everything needs to be modern now - modern with butch heros and busty ladies. Eternal Darkness is the last game that I can remember that really tried something different in the adventure genre and, to me, it was a huge success - I loved it. The industry seems to be heading more towards more 'lightweight' but enjoyable games and 'core' games which seem to be mostly racing, fps or 3rd person shooters. While I do enjoy these types of games, I do miss some of the type of games I used to play on the PC - XWing, Alone in the Dark, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, Command and Conquer...

I can't be bothered (nor do I have the cash) to keep up with the PC arms race - so the 360 and Wii are my only gaming choices now... and I don't see these kind of games being made for them. :(

EDIT: recent demo of Civ for the xbox was really impressive, but reading impressions made it sound as though they've dumbed down the actual game - made it shorter and aimed towards online play (with a really small zoom out level). Which is a shame.

Chegwin on Wii

The really poor shovelware on the Wii is unforgivable. The fact that these are mostly ports of a console now almost ten years old isn't exactly inspiring. The lack of a half decent online system doesn't help either in terms of gaming. What the Wii does offer the non-gamer is a web browser, the photo channel (the channels in general are excellent) and something simple to use as it is point and click.

Hopefully the European Brawl release will reinject the interest of the trad gamer but beyond that, what is there?

shovelware on the Wii is interesting ... one mans shovelware is another mans family entertainment. Take Smarty Pants for example. It's a great multiplayer. There's no way on earth I'd every play it single player, but, I've spent hours on it on multiplayer... I reckon it falls into most people's shovelware.

The PS2 had TONS of shite on it - but it didn't grow as quickly as the Wii so there was more of a tradition of solid 'core' games as well. The Wii has come out of the blue and it's obvious that it's surprised Nintendo as well... folks are still playing catch up. It takes a good couple of years to get a good game original and new game together.

Btw - I think Clone Wars (which is exclusive to Wii) will be excellent.

Hardly ever play my Wii but I'm very reluctant to get rid of it. Have barely touched Metroid Prime 3 on it which was the last game I bought for it I think.

Can't even remember the last time it was turned on, a good 2 months possibly and that was only to play bowling with a friend.

Yeah, it was really sad when Harry Potter became huge and all books for intelligent adults slowly disappeared.

I have no issue deceiving myself of this outcome and would gladly lay the blame solely on that talentless harpy. Have you seen the bestsellers list?

This relies powerfully on ignoring the fact that most people who read are very, very stupid indeed and that total bullshit didn't see daylight 'fore Rowling's spirited tripe emerged but that too isn't a difficult request to honour.

Fuck you Rowling!

Even if the PS2's line up wasn't much better than the Wii's by this point, it certainly had plenty of games to look forward to. The Wii, from what I've read, has none at all, apart from Animal Crossing and possibly that game by ex-Clover members.

I agree that it'd be wonderful if some good point and click adventures and strategy games popped up on it; apart from offering something deeper and more substantial on the format, they'd also be less affected by it's lack of graphical power and its lack of HD support (I still prefer adventures to be 2D and cartooney, and strategy games don't need anything fancy.) Hell, I'd even be happy with a Myst-like game to relax with (the controller would suit it.)

I do think criticisms of its lack of HD support are valid. Sure, it never aimed to rival the other two consoles in terms of power, but if you've invested in an HD television and are used to 360 and PS3 titles on it, the Wii just looks ridiculously ugly (apart from Mario Galaxy...) and there's no way I'm switching back just because it doesn't support the new tv. Luckily 2D sprite based games aren't too affected by this, so I can still enjoy all the old SNES and Megadrive classics without a problem....

Enough wibbling.
