Revisiting the last-gen, older games you're still playing

After about 5 months of searching I finally managed to get a copy of The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction on the original Xbox yesterday. A brilliant game and just good silly fun. Blasting around the city smashing tanks, people, buildings etc. all while increasing your abilities as you go along and becoming stronger. It seems the new game hasn't got anywhere near capturing spirit of being the Hulk, whereas this got it down almost perfectly.

Othar "last-gen" games I still go back to are Halo 1 and 2 (mostly 1) and Crimson Skies, which needs a bloody sequel so badly it hurts. I wish more people still played it online.

So what last-gen games do you still go back to from time to time?

In the last few months, prompted by Chains of Olympus, I've replayed GoW 1 and 2 and thoroughly enjoyed them both. More recently I've just spent 30 hours in San Andreas, (Xbox version) and my time there has confirmed that it is a better place to be than the new Liberty City.

I've also replayed all the RE games available on GC since acquiring my 360.

These are all games that I'd played before, but I played Bully on PS2 after I'd already "upgraded" and will eventually get round to playing the PS2 version of Okami.

I hadn't really thought about it before, but I don't feel put off playing an older game just because it's been designed for use on older hardware, this may be because I've grown used to taking a step backwards, (kinda), to enjoy DS games.

Hmm... perhaps I'm not quite the graphics whore I assumed I was.

Edit: Oh yeah, it was only last year that I got round to playing Shadow of the Colossus for the first time.

I actually found San Andreas to be worse than Vice City, though that could be because, while there was a massive game world it was filled with a whole lot of nothing between the cities.

Also I hated Sweet.

"HOOD BALLAS HOOD GROVE STREET MOMS MOMS HOOD HOOD ROLLIN STREET MOMS GROVE STREET HOOD!"

"I only asked if you wanted a drink..."

"MOMS BALLAS HOOD STREET!"

Vice City does seem to be the gamers choice, but I love the huge playground and fantastic toys that SA bring.

I know what you mean about Sweet though. Luckily he spends most of trhe game in prison and you get out of the Hood as soon as you're able.

As a counter point, both Truth and James Woods' agent are awesome GTA characters.

Funnily enough I got a real hankering for Ultimate Destruction myself the other day, despite finishing it 100% back when it first came out. This then lead on to me playing Ultimate Spider-Man and then I really wanted to play Voodoo Vince and Timesplitters 2/FP but none of them work on my 360. I check the xbox.com/games and fuck me, fucking Barbie Pissflap Adventures or some shit is BC but Timesplitters isn't??? What the hell is the world coming to?

I only just bought PS2 for the first time ;) thus:

Final Fantasy X - too long for me.

Pro Evo 6 - it isn't ISS98 to my bitter disappointment. It is like playing real football - problem is real football is generally boring. I can't even score most games. Not my thing.

Ico - what I've seen excellent, but has strange picture issues on my telly. Hoping new cables will sort it.

God Hand - probably the best game ever made. Some of the posters carping on in the first few pages of the original thread should be ashamed of themselves.

Everybody's Golf - I adore this. Excellent learning curve.

Beyond Good & Evil - haven't tried it yet

Ring of Red - ditto

Kingdom Hearts - watched my girlfriend play this. Not a fan.

Also Resident Evil 4 on the Gamecube.

I've always wanted to play Hulk bit it's not BC, is it? Can anyone say if the PS2 version is as good? I do still have an original Xbox, is it worth hooking that up or is the difference negligible? My PS2 still gets loads of use. Easily the best console for diversity and quality in its top 10% of software. God Hand, Guitar Hero and Persona 3 still get regular run outs. The brilliant DMC3:SE got cut short because of the stupid save system whereby Dante and Vergil are saved seperately and not under the same file. Resulting in me accidentally saving over my 6 hours of Dante with 6 minutes of Vergil. Grr. Amazing machine though, and I still quite regularly get games for it. Kill:Switch was a nice distraction for £3.

Games which 'upgrade gracefully' (not sure if that is a good term to use there) on current hardware often don't feel much behind the latest games, especially as you can use wireless pads rather than dusty, years-old pads with gunked up analogue sticks. I went back to Ninja Gaiden Black and Flatout recently and they both look great on the 360.

I'm a bit bummed I've got one of the new PS3s now, as I'd really like to play some of my fave PS2 games upscaled at some point (i.e. MGS3).

I'm currently playing through all the Gamecube Resident Evil's on the Wii, which I'll top off with Resi 4 Wii Edition. Then I'm going to work my way through all my PS1/2 games. Which are (deep breath) Final Fantasy IX, Forbidden Siren 1+2, Global Defence Force, God Hand, Haunting Ground, Ico, MGS 1+2+3, Project Zero 1+2+3, Rez, Silent Hill 3+4, Spaaace Channel 5 and ZOE2.

Look, I've finished MGS4, what else am I going to do for the foreseeable future? ;)

I've been playing Skies of arcadia legends recently. I know that's really previous previous gen but that counts surely. I've still got a huge list of previous gen games to start including Okami, FFXII and tales of symphonia.

I'm absolutely convinced that now is the right time to re-discover the previous gen. You can get some great console bundles on ebay right now as the mainstream are starting to step up to the next gen.

I have Second Sight sitting here unplayed - is it worth me chucking it in the drive for a few hours, or should I just skip it now?

I loved it. The story was lush and whilst the psychic powers seemed underdeveloped and underused (Especially compared to Psyops which came out around the same time), the style, storytelling and atmosphere suck you right in.

Add Ghost Hunter, ICO and a rerun of SOTC to your PS1/2 list and this is mine too!
