My favourite reggae track of all time is "Riding For A Fall" by Horrace Andy. In fact anything he did is pure gold. Its all roots stuff mind you so there is very little bassline. For a big bass line dance hall tune check out "Oysters & Conch" by Beenie Man. Awesome. Im hoping this thread stays. I will be back later with some tracks!

Mr Do knows his reggae, Thats some fantastic suggestions there. I was thinking some King Tubby, I will have a dig through my collection of 7s latter. I was thinking "Went to a dance of a Greenwich band" or maybe "Roots Natty Roots" both excellent King Tubby tracks. Just call me Raas Abbott :-)

I'm ignorant and stupid: Can I have a top five LPs for each genre, please?

I'm not too knowledgable about individuals but apart from a few budget skatalite CDs this is the only ska album I've ever purchased and I don't feel the need to get any more, so many classics on there, including:

Lord Tanamo - I'm in the mood for Ska

(minus the cheesy keyboard)

Lloyd & Glen - Jezebel

The Skatalites - Guns of Navarone

If you like those, you'll love the CD

Thanks for all the reccomendations so far....the thread's off to a banging start - great to see some lovers in here.

Apologies on the 1st post. All links should now be intact n working. I'm really lazy with my playlist's so excuse the mix of genre's.

Re: Heads High

I bloody love that track!

It's pure and unapologetically amazing innit. I've got the original and a remix - let me know if you need.

Utterly essential.

On the subject of voices here's a few of my faves:

John Holt - Police In Helicoptor**

Tenor Saw - Ring The Alarm

Half Pint - Greetings***

Barrington Levy - Under Mi Sensi

I wake up to 'Greetings' on my alarm, it sends the missus bananas...but I'm besotted with the tune. (It's also the ringtone on my phone) [/goosebumps] ;)

It's not really an 'album' genre tbh. There is some great albums though - Heart of The Congos by The Congos (production like that is why Lee Perry is idolised, not because he's barking mad), Skylarking by Horace Andy, the soundtrack to Rockers. Or anything on the king of album reissue labels, Blood and Fire.

There's tons and tons of great compilations though. Trojan and Soul Jazz are probably the pick of the reissue labels. Try some of these:

Soul Jazz - 100% Dynamite (and the follow ups, 200%, 300% etc), Studio One Story

Blood and Fire - If Deejay was your Trade

Trojan - any of the box sets.

Heres a fact for you fact fans. Ini Kamoze of the awesome "Here come the hotsteppa" fame went on to produce the frankly brilliant Damian Marley track "Welcome To Jamrock"

Sorry to be a pedant but Ini Kamoze did the original 'World Of Music' tune which the Damien Marley track sampled.

BIG TUNE: World Of Music

heres a more recent tune:

one for the junglists:

Top Cat - Push Up Your Lighta!!!!

I'm a massive fan of vintage roots music, i'm currently recovering from dancing to King Tubby all day yesterday!

Esar, You sound like you know your stuff, I just dabble but in the inlay card to Welcome To Jamrock it says the title track is produced by Mr Kamoze. Some fantastic tracks you put up there. Would you consider blessing us with one of your heavy mix tapes on a Roots tip? Please! :-)

It would be a pleasure to do a reggae mix! I'll give it a go when I get some spare time.

I love Reggae and there's been some excellent suggestions already, but there is nothing for me that can compare with these two albums.

Ijahman Levi - Haile I Hym

Deeply spiritual Rastafarian reggae. Levi's voice is heartbreakingly sweet.

And a rare record these days, but a record I've listened to my whole life (my Dad bought the vinyl the week after I was born) Jah Lion's Columbia Colly http://www.amazon.co.uk/Colombia-Colly-Jah...6500&sr=8-1. Deep dark minimal music, with rumbling basslines and scriptural recitations by Jah Lion himself (it was produced by Lee Perry).

It will cost you a fair bit to get hold of it legally but I promise you, if you like reggae you won't be dissapointed.

The following three albums are highly recommended for the new reggae listener.

Madlib - Blunted in the Bomb Shelter

I reckon long-term reggae lovers will appreciate that. I grabbed it from somewhere (newzbin I think) a few years back. Proposterously good, including: The Aggrovators, King Tubby, U Roy, Zap Pow and The Upsetters - definitely recommended. Just a shame they're not the full songs, but hey.

Slowing it down for the lovers:

Mad Cobra - Flex

My 12" of this is nearly worn out, crank the bass to 11 and get it on.

And here's that riddim used on the infamous and politically incorrect anti-gay anthem:

Buju Banton - Boom Bye Bye

...it doesn't get much slacker than this, apologies if it offends anyone - but the download is up to you.

Let's not forget Buju does 'right-on' music too smile.gif

The older this music gets the better it sounds. Bless Reggae Music.
