That gameplay preview has really turned me around on the game. It might just be a return to form for Bioware which is exciting considering the drivel they have released since Baldur's Gate 2. I really want to play as an upper class Dwarf just for the crazy intrigues they were describing on Idle Thumbs.

Drivel, what drivel?

It looks amazing. I think the silent player character approach looks a bit weird because of the perspective, though. It's funny because it's like the NPCs are all clinically insane. It's like half the game mechanic revolves around the scenes in I Am Legend where Will Smith has conversations with the mannequins.

Icewind Dale 2, Neverwinter Nights 1 and 2...

The IWD series was made by Black Isle Studios and NWN2 by Obsidian Entertainment. Also, NWN was excellent. The problem was a lot of people misunderstand it's purpose, instead expecting a successor to Baldur's Gate.

Jade Empire

One dud in 8 years is hardly a bad record.

It wasn't helped by claims that the Bioware devs themselves made in the run up to the game's release.

Well as I recall most of it was that there'd be all this super multiplayer stuff but that the singleplayer wouldn't be neglected. I think the quotes that were being thrown around at the time were that the singleplayer campaign would be of equal quality (and length? I'm not sure if this was mentioned) to BG2's.

Ah okay. I don't remember that. If they said that then it's understandable some people were disappointed. I always understood the pitch as an attempt to bring pen and paper style role-playing to CRPGs which I think it did very successfully.

What a strange trailer. The way it's edited makes her dialogue seem even more stilted than it is already. I also can't understand why they cut out the violent death when the trailer is age gated and carries all those ESRB descriptors at the beginning. I'm finding it increasingly hard to get a feel for the overall tone of this game. Based on that trailer, it seems like some dark comedy fantasy.

I read the edge preview in the issue with the Rage cover today. Dragon Age is now a must-buy for me, it sounds like this will be a proper RPG, one like they used to make in the old days. And it's not often that a rpg on a console doesn't get simplified to fuck (hello, Oblivion), so this is all sounding great to me. Especially since the 360 version of The Witcher was cancelled - I'm still angry about that.

Mate of mine saw a behind scenes video demo of this at one of the recent conventions and said it instantly sprang up to one of his most wanted. The graphics weren't stunning he said, but the gameplay/choices/storyline stuff on display really blew him away.

Indeed. All signs point to a continuation from where Baldur's Gate 2/Neverwinter Nights left off, which is one of the best thing imaginable. I can't understand why anyone would want to buy it for a console though - I can't imagine it will control as well (PS3 might have mouse support, I suppose but I haven't heard about it) plus you miss out on the mod support.

I don't play games on PC, it's just a weird thing of mine. I'll always wait for a console version, no matter how long it takes, always hoping that it won't be simplified. I'm still hoping for a 360 version of Stalker and The Witcher. I don't care about all the other PC games (99% of which are either FPS games, MMO's or RTS games anyway) but those two I would love to have on a console.

Edit: that's not completely true. I do play games on PC or else I would have missed out on such brilliant gems as Thief, Thief II, Outcast, Planescape, Grim Fandango, Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines, and others. If there's a decent console version available though (like Morrowind on the XBox) I'll usually go for that.

But anyway, Dragon Age, eh? Phwoar ;)

I'm still hoping that Bioware weave their magic and it turns out all lovely in the end, but all the trailers I've seen so far make the game look fucking terrible. It just looks so stilted and wooden. That, and it doesn't look like much fun ;) . I don't feel that 'big budget film' - effect that Mass Effect had in spades.

My fingers are crossed - I love fantasy RPGS!

It is a good thing that it isn't trying to be a film like Mass Effect. At least in my opinion. It is an adventure, not a space opera. Have you played Baldur's Gate 2? I imagine it will be like that.

Also I wouldn't pay much attention to the marketing; it has been bizarre and schizophrenic - there were some particularly embarrassing and jarring adverts with cheesy heavy metal stylings. Awful and completely unfitting. Then the next moment they are pushing the deep dialogue options.

They've adjusted the controls etc to fit the platform. The PC version will control like BG/NWN with a similar camera view, the console version will have a closer camera more akin to KOTOR with actions/spells being selected on an evolution of the action menu ring from Mass Effect.
