Sony E3 Conference: Done & Dusted

Nobody in the video said that PS3 was better than 360. Nobody. Or even hinted at it. Tretton lied before it. Not quite as bad as the "billion hardware units" thing, but still a lie! Hilarious spin.

It's basic marketing 101 that you don't mention your competitors by name. They're not going to badmouth the 360 or Wii in their conference when it's supposed to be all about Sony.

I thought that was the best conference, but only by virtue of the fact that they didn't embarrass themselves like Microsoft did with their wholly unimaginative attempts at securing the wider audience or give the core audience a big "fuck you" like Nintendo did.

It was still totally boring.

Well why the Dickens do you not like the PS3? It's mega powerful and has epic games on it. Should be right up your alley.

I like it, nice console. I have one. But it has no epic games that interest me, except MGS4.

It has LBP though and the up and coming Team Ico game. And also GoW.

They are not many, but they will be super duper.

Probably because the point of the video was to say that PS3 development isn't as difficult as it was two years ago. Everyone is making multiplaform games now, they don't need to convince developers to come aboard.

I think MAG is sending out it's shockwaves. NeoGAF is just on the pulse.

Seriously, show that footage to anyone, then say 256 people are playing it, and their skull would cave-in because of how too-awesome it would be for them.

Don't be sill...ugh! I cahnt shpeak...

Of all the 'core' stuff that's been shown, at least MAG is trying to do something that hasn't been done on consoles before.

If they can nail the controls, I seriously think it's gonna be a phenomenon - on Halo levels. Hopefully they can look at how Killzone 2 etc does the controls and improve on that.

Is there an official site for it yet?

I know it sounds pretty closed minded, and it's not helped by the setting, but how brash and American-y were the games on show? Just American football this and shoot the shit out of that. And the best thing was fucking English! And it still never had a release date announced, gurrgh.

The thing about MAG is that it does sound like a nice idea, nobody is going to dispute that. But think how long ago Killzone 2 was first announced, via its pre-rendered trailer. That was three years ago and it's still not out. MAG clearly hasn't been developed anywhere near enough to be shown (they could have greenlit it two months ago just in time to make a movie for the conference for all we know) and we'll be watching trailers from E3 2011 by the time we get to play it.

All of the games MS showed are due in the forseeable future, and we already know of other titles they have in production, like Alan Wake, for beyond that time. They didn't waste our fucking time showing us shit that's borderline irrelevant because it's nowhere near finished.

That wasn't the point of the video, according to Tretton. He said before it that the devs would explain how the PS3 was expanding the "gap" between it and the other consoles. Which isn't what they said at all.

When the archive of the conference is up, I'll give you his exact words if you like.

The vague October 2008.

I'm still waiting for Home's release date. 2009 anyone?

How is resistance revolutionary!? Yes, it's pretty and huge scale. That doesn't prevent it from shit gameplay.

In about 60 magazine and proper online reviews of Resistance, not one mentions shit gameplay. Funny, that. Have you even played it? It's solid - that is, gets everything right such that it's playable and fun to the end (the last few levels are the best in the game, btw). Now it's upto Resistance 2 to 'up the ante' and make it stand out from the crowd as it's no longer the main FPS on the PS3 like it was in the beginning.

I think the skyscraper-tall monster, which moves and is animated in real time (with a ridiculous number of polygons in it's mouth alone), more than ups the ante. It sails right past the ante and hits the stellarsphere.

Yep

I was happy when they unveiled Diablo 3 than it wasn't just a pre rendered movie but demo'd the actual game. All reveals should be like that.

Imagine if you were still at school or whatever and everyone in your year with a console had a PS3 and you all set up Massive Action Game every weekend with everyone forming different parties, taking up their own roles in battle and letting their characters develop over time.

Now imagine your Gran trying to lose weight by jumping and down on a Wii Fit board, while your little sister prtends to play recorder in the corner.

This is why Sony wins.

I tried to buy some polygons the other day but couldn't because Resistance 2 was using them all. They even had to use some of the interior polygons from the game in order to make him so big. I bet there's a soldier somewhere in R2 reduced to little more than a truncated tetrahedron, floating about quietly sobbing because he has lost all his polygons.

Fuck yeah! Resistance 2's trailer reached new levels of AI, scripting and action. The amount of buildings was AMAZING. The unscripted battle with the monster was truely breathtaking. I've never seen anything that big in an FPS before, not without it being in the background anyway. It really felt like being in Manhattan. I think Resistance 2 won't just be the main FPS on the PS3, it'll be the main FPS, at least until Killzone 2 comes along.

So many polygons.

Would Sony still win?

I was at school today and can tell you that wouldn't happen. That isn't to say it sounds bad, just that I need more details before I can declare it anything of anything. Namely: how does the whole thing come together and how do the 8 man squads influence the overarching war.

Oh yeah, and how does building up your character work. I've always been suspicious of that in a game, it just seems to hamper people who can't play it often even more than usual.
