Sony E3 Conference: Done & Dusted

In terms of making a statement about the next year for PS3 owners, and what potential PS3 buyers would be investing in, and it was a fucking disaster from start to finish.

That's just nonsense. If you were to say that about Nintendo then you'd absolutely be right, but although they didn't make the most of what they've got there was certainly enough there for me to be happy with as a PS3 owner. Microsoft just about managed to do the same, but coming out of their showing all I could think about was their Singstar and Eyetoy knock offs.

Sony's, JESUS.

You aren't actually serious.

Hi Guys

I missed the conference, but the sarcasm vapours are so strong I literally cannot tell how shit this conference was. I've read a few pages, mainly about MAG and neogaf, and am sadly none the wiser as to just how shit it was.

Was it microsoft shit, nintendo shit, or shit of a maginitude not previously comprehended?

Microsoft showed some cool games (GOW 2 being the highlight by far), Nintendo fucked their core audeience even harder up the arse with yet more mini-game peripheral bullshit, and Sony blew everything away by having most everything decent on the 360 anyway plus Ratchet and Clank, Little Big Planet, Infamous, Resistance 2 and MAG goodness.

Of course he is.

And he's right, man.

Seriously, leave everything out of the 360 conference that isn't on PS3 (as Sony did for vice-versa) and what have you got left? Two decent games and a bunch of wannabe Nintendo bollocks. Compare that to the list above and tell me he's right.

I don't really care for Gears 2, Ratchet & Clank, Little Big Planet, Fable 2 or Resistance so, honestly, nobody's coming out of this whole affair looking good. MAG certainly is a nice premise, but then again so is some of the social stuff Microsoft are doing.

If we have to stick ribbons on the thing, it's a dull draw that we'll be seeing again next year.

All the sarcasm aside, I think Sony have done really really badly here. Sure, Nintendo's show was awful, but they're selling Wiis and DSes like motherfuckers, they could have shown Miyamoto yawning for an hour and got away with it. While PS3 isn't doing quite as badly as it seemed they might from the famous Giant Enemy Crab conference, they're stll in third. And what was there to change minds and bring in the PS3 customers? Resistance 2 the stairs and scripting game. The ability to pay money for boring motorsports programmes. A video download system completely eclipsed by MS's partnership with Netflix. Little Big Planet, a game that looks nice, but we've also seen a thousand times already (if there's ever been an example of a game over-exposed before release it's this one). Home and Killzone being swept under the carpet. God Of War out at some time before the end of the next millenium.

So all they have is some nice looking PSN games, Infamous, and MAG, a game that we have no information about at all other than it will have 250 person battles.

I mean the 360 show was hardly super-incredible, but at least they delivered a bit of an OMGasm with FFXIII. Sony needed to have shown more.

Gotta love how MSs attempted megaton game didn't even get a mention in Sonys presentation! Just another release for the PS3, no big deal as it already got talked about a year ago.

Bet that HD movie service is getting a battering tonight in the US.

At least the two MS games are coming out this year.

Sony are still living in "here are some games, we don't know when they're coming BUT ENJOY THIS LOVELY CG TRAILER!" land.

Personally, I'm sick of getting hyped for games that are more than 6 months away.

A Sony exec just posted on Neogaf that MAG will integrate seemlessly with HOME. Apparently all 256 players will be able to mill around in the Home lobby thingummy choosing uniforms, watching adverts and telling jokes, and when the party 'super commander' presses 'X' the floor disappears and everyone drops out of the sky onto the battlefield. Erm...in bases. Facing each other.

As someone who is toying with the idea of getting a PS3, the hour or so I saw of Sony's presentation pretty much put me off.

Home looks like bollocks to me but what do I know, I'm too old to appreciate social networking stuff I guess.

I'm only really interested in games and I've seen nothing that the 360 can't offer in some shape or form and since MS are already adding extra functionality with the new dashboard and other bits and pieces, even if that kind of stuff swayed me I'd be happy to stick with the 360 offerings.

However, having said all of that, I don't think that I'm really relevant to the market that Sony are pitching to now. All the things they offer probably will sell systems to gamers who don't come on forums like this. PS3 owners I know will certainly be wooed by the ability to watch Top Gear on a console.

I'm left wondering if you're the one being serious. What did Sony show that's out this year? Two games? One of which we've been seeing footage from for the last two years?

Actually fuck that, what did Sony show that will be out before the next e3? Even if you take away all the multiplatform stuff, MS still had a shitload more games that are, ironically, far more varied despite the stick the system gets. The PS3 has next to nothing.

Stuff like MAG and God of War 3 aren't games, they're ideas scribbled onto pieces of paper with a rendered movie attached. They're at the drawing boards, filler because they had nothing left to pad out the conference with.

Why? It's still the best Blu-ray/MGS4 player on the market, that hasn't changed.

They relegated quite a few 2008 exclusives to those stupid montage trailers. That was their biggest fault, it's not that the games aren't there, it's just that they spent too much time on the PS2, video store and fucking Gran Turismo TV and ignored what they should have been talking about.

Bingo. The presentation wasn't the best itself, but when you consider what you can take from the 360 one, everything they left out, and all that promise for the future (when Microsoft will probably jump ship to the 1080, or whatever, at the first sign of flagging sales, just like they did with Xbox) it adds up, baby.
