Sony E3 Conference: Done & Dusted

Are you really going to pay an extra $50 a year on top of the $8.99 a month that you are going to have to pay for unlimited streaming with Netflix just so you can rewind, pause, and fast forward what you are streaming from Netflix?

If you already had Netflix, you'd be streaming on your PC most of the time, and the sudden availability on your Xbox would be a free perk, not a negative.

Also, you're wrong:

Microsoft, Redmond, Wash., claims Xbox 360 will be the only game system that lets users instantly watch streaming movies, which will be available to Xbox LIVE Gold members who are also Netflix subscribers, according to the company. There is no additional cost to stream movies, above the cost of Xbox LIVE Gold.

Especially when as Raize said, you get the same functionality for free on a silver account with Viceo Marketplace downloads.

I might. But I'd be really, really annoyed when I paid the chiselling bastards.

Right, so you can't even use it unless you have a Gold account.

That makes it even worse then!

Not really, it's just another feature included in Gold subscription. If you don't want Gold, then don't pay for Gold, surely?

Ok, say you are someone that doesn't like playing games online with people, and are happy waiting a few extra days for demos so you are perfectly happy with your Live Silver account.

I dunno, how often do you rewind, pause and fast forward films? You'll have to make that decision. However, with some really basic maths, it's easy to work out that if you watch more than a couple of films a month, the Netflix deal is better value for money.

I'll "do the math" for you, as they say, if you want.

I'm sceptical about LBP..

User created content loses it's appeal VERY quickly when it's limited to a certain number of assets etc. so unless you can paint and texture your own objects, and freehand-customize their shape that could be a problem.

I'm pretty sure you can. As for the other thing, it really will depend on how creative people are, but more importantly, how the user created content is sorted and ranked.

I don't know about you, but when I think of gold subs, I think of games not movies.

As Super Stu said, even with the $50 a year and the Netflix sub it's still better value than Sony's Video Store. So really I don't know what point you're trying to make any more.

It's a bit irrelevant now, since it appears you need Gold just to access the service, but there's absolutely no way to defend holding back functionality like that at all.

No, of course not, it's a barely veiled attempt to pinch more Gold subs money.

However, things aren't so tediously black and white as some would have you believe. For some people, this is pants. For people who rent a lot of films, this is good.

The other concern is that although it may have advanced physics etc. when everything you create is limited to that engine and those characters it's bound to end up feeling the same no matter what environments people come up with.

I'm only sceptical because I haven't seen the process of how someone comes up with the kind of level seen in the graphs section of the Conference. Where are the scripting controls, for example? If that stuff can be done easily, as the devs have claimed throughout, then the game is going to be outstanding. If, however, you can only place objects without the kind of scripting that's been shown in the demoed levels, then I'm not so excited.

If you dont have a netflix and live sub then that is $158 that you aren't already paying. With Sony you are just paying for the movies that you actually rent which is why Netflix isn't "destroying" it.

Actually, I think Gold users only for netflix streaming is better than no pausing for silver members. It feels like you're getting some sort of value for your money that way. It would also have been OK if Silver users had a reduced set of films they could stream or something. But having to pay Microsoft before going for a wee or you'd risk missing a good bit of the film, that would just seem mean.

But that feature is already there on the 360 too, in the form of the Video Marketplace. The Netflix content is just a nice addition. Again, do you actually use your 360?

You can just rent too on the 360- been able to for ages.

A lot of people in the US already have netflix subs (the dvd posted to your house ones)- this means they can download stuff for essentially free if they already have a gold sub or the price of a gold sub.

Indeed, for casual rentals (as in the kind of person who wanders down to Blockbuster of a saturday night), the Sony and normal Live marketplace system (been around for ages) is better.

For people with netflix, amazon, <insert rental company of choice> type subscriptions, this is good value for money.

Hopefully that clears that up.

Yeah I'm not sure what WK is on about. If I wasn't at work I could switch on my 360 and rent a movie in SD or HD right now.

EDIT I was seriously thinking about buying a PS3 this year which is why I've followed the conference quite closely. All I can say now is that reading this thread has saved my money.

Surprisingly enough, I do use my 360. For games.

That doesn't negate the fact I'm not talking about Video Marketplace. If I was going to compare Sony's video download service to anything, it would be video marketplace but I'm talking strictly about the addition of Netflix.

Edit: I think I'm just going to blame that article really for making it look like the netflix service was available to everyone with added perks if you have gold.

Disappointed we have to wait until Fall for the PS3 Video thing. Xbox 360's service is utter crap. There are like 5 which are new-ish. Most of it is all old movies and uses their bullshit points system.

Is the delay related to the Sky TV on PSP thing you think?
