Sony E3 Conference: Done & Dusted

Doesn't mean it can't.

True, but have you played games with that many players? I have played with close to that, and it was riddled with problems.

It's very, very difficult to make balanced, cohesive, and fun for everyone.

The more players there are, the more chance you have of getting shot in the back, getting killed at spawn, getting killed over and over again by vehicles you can't destroy, or getting ganged up on by a squad of 10-30 players.

This normally leads to two teams moving around in one huge cluster-fuck of players, which generally ends up being pot-luck as to who gets kills (whoever shoots at the enemy horde first with the fastest connection).

There's a reason 256 hasn't really been done in PC FPS games, even though it could have been done years ago. That's because it's generally very, very hard to make it fun for every single player.

Surprised that Planetside isn't being mentioned more here, Sony have effectively already done a futuristic version of MAG. Perhaps they'll be helping the SOCOM team.

Meanwhile, I've got a feeling this is going to need hefty, EVE-like servers to cope.

Which raises the question of whther it'll have a subscription fee.

Haha, love the sour grapes in this thread!

256 players. Battles. Not skirmishes. Not one man vs hordes. Actual battles, with real people, with ranks and a chain of command.

Glorious. CS, Halo etc are gonna feel so tiny afterwards.

Yeah, of course it'll work...when you can't even manage to get a 12 vs 12 team on CS to work because of one or two pricks going commando/postal/teamkilling, it sure as hell won't work with 128 vs 128

Their are some real idiots in this thread. Of course MAG is going to be shit - apart from it's groovy name, everything about it points to stinker. But Sony are all about the long game, and it should be obvious to anyone but the most rabid and blinkered fanboy that MAG is all about proof of concept. When Sony fail to pull it off, it will be because it's simply a tentative and experimantal step in the direction of the nirvana of online gaming - THE 512 PLAYER FPS!

Remember when Sega used to advertise that they had 6 billion players?

Was that a special version of Chu Chu Rocket or something?

:)

Seriously though; MAG has potential to be like Planetside-lite - sure it's being made by SOCOM people, and we haven't seen anything but a CG trailer. But I mean, the premise isn't a bad one.

Internet people. They'll argue about any old fucking thing.

Good man, I was just scouring the thread for a mention of Planetside.

I've been saying for ages that it was years ahead of its time, and that one day someone would announce basically the same game and get a shitload of attention for it. Not that I'm saying MAG won't be any good - it's just kind of funny.

The only idiots are the people who can't see what a brave step Sony are taking. When we're all playing MMMAG (MASSIVELY MULTIPLAYER MASSIVE ACTION GAME), the first 1024 PLAYER FPS, we'll see who the idiots are!

Doesn't mean it can't.

yes it does.

Look, WOW is the most popular MMORPG out there, it's not even twitch based, it struggles like fuck when you get 100+ people in the same area. There is no way in hell that this will have 256 players in one place. I gurantee it will be done in bubbles, so it will seem like there are 256 players.

It's impossible to get enough bandidth over the net for that many in one place unles syou have a 100meg connection to each player.

100meg will probably the standard connection once this beast finally sees the light of day.

I know it's not a fair comparison because there are orders of magnitude more things going on in EVE compared to an FPS, but a couple of hundred people in the same system in EVE and things slow down markedly, despite the absurd server clusters the EVE lot use.

I think I read somewhere on this forum that some things were done client side in Planetside, presumably to help with lag. It'll be interesting to see how Zipper go about this.

There's no way they're going to fork out for the insane clusters that CCP do for Eve, and that lags to hell and back when there are over a hundred or so in fighting in one area. If Eve was a twitch game - which it could never be - it just wouldn't work at all.

A few of the other points made about blobbing and not being able to tell who shot who are well made, also. There are just so many technical issues with fighting on this scale - any fighting, not just stuff that relies absolutely on timing like FPSs do - that it's hard to see how it will be successfully accomplished. And then there's the tactics evolved to cope with this by the players: tactics which are, to be fair, pretty unattractive. I suppose you do have to look at something like Planetside to see how it could work out in a more positive light.

So, sure, it's an interesting premise, as someone said (although nothing ground-breakingly original). But it's just that - a premise and a piece of FMV. It's not a game. Not yet.

And like Uzi, if they can overcome the technical and design limitations I rather wish they had found something a bit more interesting than dusty infantry battles to do with it. It has to be the most oversubscribed online theme of all.
