Hey guys, my final year of studying animation at University is going to start in late September/early October. During this year I'll be producing another short animation. If any of you checked out the Clouds section on my website you may have seen the "coming soon" section where I pitched the idea for my final year animation, if you haven't then you can find it here: http://fargalex.co.uk/Clouds

The idea in the initial pitch was that the character was trying to bring her parent back from the dead/heaven/enlightenment etc (represented by turning into a fish) and ending up as a fish herself. I'm going to rework the story when I think of something better but it'll involve this character and fish flying through the sky, the original theme was something like "coping with loss" but this will probably change.

Here are some of the first concepts I did (when I was still working on Clouds)

I can't wait, Fargal. The town/sea/city you've come up with looks brilliant, really nice design. Also: I want a wooly-fish hat. :|

Also, do keep this thread updated, it was fun getting to watch each stage of Clouds. Do you have the whole year to work on this, then? Isn't that TONS more time than the last one? Are you planning on making it the same length but with more 'stuff' in, or longer and just as sparse, or a bit of both.. or do you not know yet? It all sounds very exciting, anyway.

Good luck! :3

Cool imagery dude, the citrus colours in your first pic are wild! <_<

Just out of interest, any particular reasons for choosing this idea? Is there anything in particular you're looking to explore from an animation or filmmaking point of view, etc. for example?

The idea came to me when I was still making Clouds and is influenced by a recent animation "Kaiba", what I originally wanted to do is affect the audience on an emotional level but I don't think I'll be able to do that. Then again, apparently someone shed a few tears watching Clouds, hahaha. I'm considering using 3D for the backgrounds in this one, in terms of animation I'd like to use the environment a bit more and make something a bit more detached from reality.

The difference between this year and last year is that I've just gotten started on it a lot sooner. I'll have until May to do this so I do want to use this time to make it more finished than Clouds was. I'll be sure to update this thread with more stuff!

Thankyou for the feedback, I really appreciate it. This idea is still finding its feet and it's a bit wobbly at the moment. Once I think of a good story I can get on with it.

Oh, it's from Masaaki Yuasa?! I'd not even heard of it! Shows how 'in the loop' I am these days, haha.

Forgot to mention, I've been getting a bunch of students in to do work experience from Hertfordshire Uni and got the reel of student animations, imagine my surprise when I saw Clouds!

Great work, where was the scene that you didn't get to finish? Was it in the section with the hat sweeping up the dark clouds? as I felt when I watched it that it wasn't as clear as it could've been, it wasn't until the second viewing that I registered the sunny hole appeared where the hat had fallen through the clouds.

Other than that you did really well, especially the look of the clouds as that's not an easy thing to work with.

Ooh, surprising! I don't get told about this stuff. The bit inside the storm cloud I wanted to change to make it more "readable" but I didn't have time, the part that was completely missing was just before she encounters the storm - there was supposed to be more flying and the transition is very sudden because I wouldn't have met the deadline if I went and animated it all.
