Anne Hathaway (Rachel Getting Married) and Helena Bonham Carter will star in Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland for Disney.

The movie, which stars Mia Wasikowska as Alice and Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter, will use a combination of live action and performance-capture technology to tell the Lewis Carroll story, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Hathaway is playing the White Queen, a benevolent monarch who is deposed and banished by her sister, the Red Queen (Carter), who has an affinity for crying out, "Off with their heads!" The White Queen needs Alice to slay a creature known as the Bandersnatch.

Richard Zanuck, Joe Roth and Jennifer and Suzanne Todd are producing.

Stolen form AICN

Hey folks, Harry here... Being the voice of the Cheshire Cat in an ALICE IN WONDERLAND film has always been a plum role. In many ways, it has always been the iconic role. Something about that smile and crazy zany existence that makes the Cheshire Cat... psychedelic and freaky. In the classic Animated film, the cat was voiced by Sterling Holloway. However, we've also had everyone from Richard Arlen to Telly Savalas to Whoopi Goldberg playing the pussy with the dynamite smile and cheshire grin. So who has Tim Burton tapped to voice the Cheshire Cat in his partly motion-captured 3D ALICE IN WONDERLAND?

Well, according to Stephen Fry's Twitter he is going to be the Cheshire Cat and he announced it thusly, "Playing Cheshire Cat. Smug, complacent, cheese-eating grin - moi? Walking off to studio in next ten minutes."

Personally, I think he's perfect for the part, you?

Got to say Im really happy about this, Fry should be perfect as the cat :)

Not sure myself. I've never been convinced by him as an actor - I find it impossible to believe he is anyone other than himself playing somebody else (if that makes sense) - and whilst the role is a logical fit I'd rather somebody else.

But then I'm one of the few people who are a bit sick of seeing/hearing Fry. I used to really like him but he is really over exposed now. I'm not sure if that is his fault or the growing wave of trying to make him a national treasure has made me go off him.

Reading this thread, I can't believe some of you think Big Fish was any good. You welled up over the story of some creepy, bullshitting weirdo with a tendency to stalk women? Yeesh.

It's a subject close to many of our hearts.

Who would you rather have then? Him over exposing himself isnt a huge problem for me as there are only a few things that I have seen/heard him in and his voicework for Hitchikers Guide To The Galaxy was for me one of the best things about that film. That was one film where he was perfect for the role and I think the Cheshire Cat will be another, I agree with you that he usually seems to be playing himself but as long as he takes roles that are a good fit for him I dont think that should be a problem, I mean it hasnt hurt someone like Seth Rogen's career has it :)

The USA Today article where the images made their grand premiere, confirms our previous report that the film is actually a sequel to the original story in some ways. The movie begins at a party held at a Victorian estate where Alice, now 17, finds out they she is about to be proposed to in front of hundreds of snooty high society types and makes a run for it. Of course, she ends up following a white rabbit down a hold, back to Wonderland, a place where she visited a decade prior. The White Rabbit is convinced he has the right girl but Alice doesn’t remember he past visit to Wonderland. The creatures of Wonderland are ready to revolt and are hoping/waiting for Alice to help them.

I like the sound of most of that, but as a general rule hate "so and so returns, but doesn't remember" plots. I would have preferred a "had convinced herself the last time it was a dream" if they had to go down that route (unless there's something in the original story about her forgetting when she returns home).
