Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland

So is it just a completely different story with the same characters?

Yep it's a few years after the original story.

I was hoping for something much darker, McGee dark, but this trailer just makes it look like Willy Wonker and the Chocolate Factory2

American McGee's take on Alice in Wonderland was awful. I'm not sure what benefit making it 'darker' will have.

Most of the best adaptations have been darker but I agree, American McGee's twist on the material was awful in the extreme.

It's a pretty dark story anyway, but there's quite a big difference between a kids story that's quite dark and alludes to certain things, and making it dark by shoehorning a load of unimaginatve tasteless 'adult' themes. If that makes sense?

My concern is that this film loses the Britishness.

The book and to an extent the Disney film are like a mad example of British eccentricity exploding in a magic world. I don't think Burton can do that, so while it may look interesting enough I can't help but think it will fall flat on it's arse in terms of content. It'll just be a "weird and wacky" Tim Burton standard effort, which if you like that might be quite good. I just don't think Wonderland is the place for it.

Could be quite an interesting adaptation. So long as it, as has already been mentioned, is able to keep something of a Britisg feel to it. I thought Tim Burton did an excellent job with 'Sleepy Hollow'. Seemed like a proper homage to the old Hammer films, so perhaps there's hope everything will turn out ok.

Incidentally, for those interested in a 'darker' version of Alice in Wonderland, you should try to give Jan Svankmajer's version a look. Quite possibly the most disturbing 'U' certificate film ever made. Seriously...

Agreed. I love the look and feel of that flick.

Indeed. It's fantastic and it very much fits into how what I described as a 'good' version of Alice.

Matt Lucas looks amazing :)

The last Burton film I watched was Sweeney Todd which I thought was absolutely diabolical (I didn't know anything about it so was horrified to find out it was a musical).

A work colleague of mine is/was an extra in this film - he opens a door in the film somewhere so we are all waiting to see if he makes the final cut - unfortunately, he hasn't got any insider information. I was surprised at how much obvious CGI there is in the trailer as it doesn't look like a Burton film (perhaps this is the Disney look rather than Burton's).

And, wtf is Disney 3D?

The trailer I saw for this was all Johnny Depp, as in "Johnny Depp! With Johnny Depp. Johnny Depp". It looks like he's a character all the way through the film, as in it looks as if it deviates from Alice in Wonderland completely?

hmm i saw the teaser trailer for it the other day and i really cant make my mind up on it

i mean i have no clue why but johnny depp's mad hatter reminds me of a gay heath ledger joker

and i don't get why the queen of hearts/red queen has such a huge head!? if its to do with the cheese pieces thing why hasn't the white queen got a huge head too!?

well suppose ill have to wait till 2010 to really make up my mind on this film

Now I expect this to suck as much as Burton's recent crop of films but I am interested to see how Mia Wasikowska fares as Alice. I'm midway through In Treatment and she is absolutely fantastic in it. I bet she gets utterly swamped by Burton's usual troupe and ugly production design.
