Batman: Arkham Asylum

Bit disappointed they haven't gone with a new setting. The asylum was great, but unless they radically change its structure, it might play a little familiar. Guess we'll have to wait and see.

The trailer suggests that a part of Gotham has been cordoned off as as a new Asylum. I would assume the area comprises all the buildings which don't have any lights on — there's a big chunk of the city viewable behind that which is all lit up — which would provide Rocksteady with several very useful gameplay conceits: the player's walled in to an area of a manageable size, they can control progression through sector barriers/checkpoints, etcetera. Certainly seems like a sensible route to go down, plus the gargoyles won't seem so out of place this time!

I'd assume the second game won't be coming out until at least February/March 2011. Anyone know anything otherwise?

I think it's pretty safe to assume that the ripped Uncle Sam poster on the site

is Two Face, and the Sionis sign refers to Black Mask

.

You're right. It was hard to tell in the blurry youtube video, so I could only make out the shape of the hat, which reminded me of riddler's hat.

Ok so the joker is laughing again and harlequin is fine? cheers for the spoilers second trailer >:[ i'm still finishing the first one. either way, seems like it's all about gotham city this time, which isn't a bad thing. however, one thing i get from the trailer is that the environments are really close and tiny. one day i would love to play a free-roaming batman game with the scale of something like gta, with that true 'i'm in charge' free-roam feel.

Nooooo- smaller enviroments allow it to stay focused and brilliantly paced. GTA style games all have the same type of gameplay for a reason- in an enviroment that big you can't have the depth and pacing you get in something like AA

It's like when there was some dude wishing Hitman was in a GTA world! Well it wouldn't play like Hitman anymore!

Maybe. I don't think a fresh-thinking free roaming Batman would be that limited though - there is nothing stopping a GTA-style batman game having the same addictive, free-form combat, for example. Nothing at all. These 'small room' Batman games are great, but I await the next step for reals. Batman needs to own Gotham, not be locked in an asylum/street-scene (in order to fulfill the potential of the franchise.) It's all very suited towards the engine and development path at the moment, but I think they can do mooore and give more freedom. Here's to waiting for more details.

I had this on hold while I played some PC stuff, but wow, I just got to the

morgue

where you get affected by the

scarecrow

and taken in to

a bizarre dreamworld

. Absolutely fantastic, innovative, creative, and lots of other words ending in -ive.

After playing the demo I was skeptical about the game. I was surprised at the high scores it was getting, but after picking it up and getting to where I am, I totally understand all the  for it.

Pretty much confirms it...

I've returned to Batman to finish off the challenges. Am I the only one who still can't get 3 boomerangs on the combat challenges to save my life? Whatever I do, I always make one mistake of some kind, whether it's leaving it too late to counter, attacking in a direction there is no enemy, taking a punch or not mixing it up enough? This is just the first combat challenge. My high score is about 15000 (the target is 18000), I've never managed flawless combo on every round and only once managed the dark knight ultimate bonus for taking no damage for every round. Am I missing some obvious technique, can I change my play-style, or do I just have to accept my reactions/brain speed aren't good enough for this kind of game. I've never been very good at beat-em-ups. It just feels a bit unfair sometimes (wah).

My frustration is compounded by the agonizingly slow in-between round score tally and compulsory level load and intro whenever you have to retry. Why the hell didn't they let you skip any of this? It always annoys me in games when challenge modes/time attack modes don't let you get right into the action, as you're always inevitably going to have a lot of retries. Grr. Wonder how long I should try before I call it quits, in total playtime I must have spent over 3 hours cumulatively on this challenge.

And on the opposite end of the scale, the stealth challenges are pretty fun!

EDIT - Some more issues with the game I have in the combat challenge:

- The camera, I often can't see where the next enemy is, and where enemies are charging in from, when I'm in mid-combo. This leads me to guess where enemies are when I'm striking at distance, and gives you very little time to counter enemies that suddenly attack into your view.

- The special moves (on Xbox A&X, B&Y), I don't find it clear when I can use them, it's hard to keep an eye on the combo counter to see whether you can pull them off. Try to pull them off when you haven't got enough combo and you end the combo prematurely or pull off a move you didn't want to. Grrr. I especially find this hard to keep track of in the middle of massive combos when you've already pulled off a few special moves.
