Batman: Arkham Asylum

I finally finished this last week. I can see that it is a good game, but I never felt any compulsion to go back to it once I stopped playing. I did enjoy it whilst playing, but never felt any kind of obsessive hook to put it back on once I turned it off. The combat is good but so many times I found it not doing what I was telling it to do; not hitting in the direction I was pointing and just punching thin air so I lose the combo, not countering when I press Y etc etc. I dug the whole look and feel of the thing, the characters were beautifully realised and the whole thing had a great sense of solidity to it. However, I thought the bosses were a bit on the weak side throughout (except the Scarecrow bits which were easily the stand out moments) and usually resorted to nothing more than running about and flinging your batarang at stuff. Which was a shame.

Still, a decent game.

I had no luck finding this in HMV today, was a it limited release similar to the Sith Edition for Force Unleashed? (which I still haven't been able to find)

Sith Edition of Force Unleashed was recalled for a reason I can't remember right now.

I was looking into it the other month, will cost you silly money on ebay if you fancy it.

I think they eventually released all the DLC though.

Oh yeah Batman, great game.

I bought this yesterday as I had a load of credit in Game. I already have the 360 version as I bought it on import before the release last year, I bought the PS3 version for the joker maps.

The 3d element is really good imho. The depth it adds to the game is very good, and there is some colour bleeding around some edges. The bits that do stand out are when you go into detective mode. Maybe its to do with the colour. Overall though, if you have the spare cash, or never played this before, I highly recommend it

if anyone else wants to know anything more, let me know

Cheers

Al

I'd love it if this sort of tech was somewhat passable for 3D. I've no intention of buying a 3D TV until they can achieve the effect without glasses, something which is nearly there, but I wouldn't mind experiencing 3D games for short bursts.

Hi Robo,

I would also say it depends on what screen your playing it on. I am lucky to be able to play it on a 46 inch LCD which is in my home office, and when i get home this evening i will upload a couple of pics if i can. Like i said before, the 3d effect on the corridors is really good and one of the main areas I noticed was the architecture of the environments. You really do see fans/pipes in the background stand out. I for one would like to see if this can be used for existing games.

If you dont have it, its worth a punt.

Cheers

Al

Cheers for that Al.

Is it giving you headaches to play it for any length of time, and how are the colours? I'd certainly appreciate seeing any shots of it. I'd be tempted to double dip once it gets to 19.99.

Hi Sean,

The actual colour playback in game is not as bad as the youtube vid. I dont know if it was the recording, but the colours on that were all over the place. The acutal game is pretty solid on colours, and only on the edges do you see bleeding.

Batman: Arkham Asylum 2 will miss its 2010 release date, according to a report.

A senior UK retail source said that it would delay the title until early 2011 to avoid the busy Christmas release period.

"We've been told that Warner has acted early to avoid releasing the game into a heavily congested pre-Christmas market," the source told CVG.

"It wants to dominate the first quarter of 2011 instead, when it can get maximum retail space and mindshare amongst gamers."

Although the title was originally scheduled for this year, a Warner representative said that no release date has been announced.

Think this is the first time I've ever been glad of a game being pushed back! I hope it's more like Summer 2011 to be honest.

Niceeee. There is no way I could play the whole game like that, just watching that has my eyes hurting and now I have a little headache.

I regret nothing!

Stuck this on and played the intro bit for a mate who was over who's mad on Batman/Joker stuff. Hadnt even opened my £15 sealed copy till then :)

Combat was quite fluid and not at all frustrating like I thought it'd be, yet to see any of the other parts the game, but seemed promising. I just hope the stealth bits arent of the type where if your discovered its instant game over. Hate games where stealth is like that :(

you can evade, and you only got to wait for the count-down, ala MGS...

Ah, I guess they just shoot the shit out of you or something? I'd have thought Bats coulda took on some armed thugs though. Is that where dropping in on them using stealth comes in, and you can actually take em out one on one? Seen that in some the vids at least.

Yeah, it's where the game gets that 'I'm the Batman' feel from. Taking out hoodlums 1 by 1 really puts the fear in the rest of em until the last one is firing blind at any passing shadow, only to cower in fear when you appear from nowhere behind him.

Started playing this the other day. Against Poison Ivy now. What a marvelous game.

Never been into Batman or comics but the detail put into the character bios, interview tapes and the very decent voice acting and pacing of the game have me totaly engrossed.

Just when you feel repitition might be sneaking in something hits you by suprise, like running through sewers from Croc or Scarecrow providing you with another trip or Joker planting bombs on the gargoyles. I like that the Joker is a constant presence - while feeling tense sneaking about some armed guards, he'll likely say something that makes me laugh at the whole situation. And despite Jokers jibes, the AI is smart enough.

And the equipment is a delight, making way more varied and fun ways to kill goons than the early Spinter Cell games. And the characterization and the graphics and . . . . I must stop gushing - going off now to try me best against Ivy.

And dont forget the Joker.
