So in other words they've included about as much altitude change as they possibly can without sticking wings on your car.

Excellent.

Having said that, I'd be surprised if you can't unlock the helicopters at some point as an easter egg. Probably really difficult, mind.

You tried it online yet? EG reviewers indicated they had but unsure against whom ...

I played a bit of the online when I previewed it at Codemasters' Leamington Spa office. Haven't been able to really test it since (I'm connected, but there doesn't seem to be anyone else around). But then I've made that clear in my review. To be honest, it's going to be very difficult to score it fairly until the game's been out a couple of weeks and the netcode can be properly tested. Again, that's a point I've made clear in my review.

I think online reviewers often follow each other. The first score out setting a precedent.

From looking at the videos I'm struggling to understand any reason for such low scores.

I'm disappointed of course but I can understand the scores. if it looks like something else but doesnt play exactly like it, e.g. have Pure's trick system or Motorstorm's deformable track, then it's immediately a lesser offering. Conversely, if it claims to be the biggest evah but then doesn't fill every square kilometre with something different then it made a rod for its own back. All these are valid criticisms and if the game had nothing else to offer, or lacked the ability to make gameplay out of every area (free roaming, or a tracker editor, both of which it has) but a weaker version of what was already available then the scores would be easier to take. But I don't believe that, personally. I thought the OXM review was spot on.

I think a lot of it is down to expectations not being met (or rather being slightly confounded). It might look to some like an open-world Motorstorm, but going into it with that mentality is only going to bring disappointment.

I'm not a massive fan of racing games, but this is one of very few I can see myself continuing with after I finish my review.

Wait, so Washington is actually really mountainous? Goddamn you, Bethesda, you owe me some mountains.

My FUEL pre-order is now placed. We'd better get a nice online community going, fellas.

Im in!

Also i think you are getting Washington state mixed up with Washington DC.

I don't understand why they do this. It just doesn't make sense and is terribly lazy. Its almost as if reviewers have no confidence in what they review.

(another topic - i know).

I think the game sounds very reviewer-unfriendly. Or maybe deadline-unfriendly. Most of the joy of it seems to be just kicking back and going for a drive without any aim in sight, which for someone needing to play as much of the game as possible before a deadline just won't work. I think many reviewers will be using the menus to get as far through the career as possible as quickly as possible, only going for a quick token drive around just so they can say they did.

Whatever their justification for the score, I doubt handling is the issue.

Personally I always found Dirt's handling very light and low on feedback, but that got great reviews.

So it's either far worse (which I find unlikely) or simply doesn't factor in at all. Which would lead me to hope it's a better game than they're letting on.

Most likely it is issues with the structure of the game itself, as you say.

Here's the EG preview from a month earlier

It's not possible to draw conclusions on vehicle handling at this point as there's still work to be done, but in the preview things already seem impressive. There's a separate learning curve in place for each vehicle type, bikes requiring a completely different approach to offroad buggies or reinforced rally cars. The speeds you can reach are extraordinary, and there's a great sense of the ground beneath your wheels.

Does anyone have any info on PS3 vs 360 version? I realise it might not be appropriate for linkster to say anything.

The Edge review does not mention which format it is based on, I would go with which ever system has your preferred online service.
