FUEL - Openworld racer from Codemasters

Presentationally this game is like a release from 2006 with its appalling loading times (which are the biggest flaw, imo) and some pretty horrible design issues.

Seriously, the basic design flaws (and some of them are so, so basic) are flabbergasting. Stuff like the Live multiplayer grumbles already mentioned. I wonder whether devs live in some kind of bubble when they make games, as there are the same kind of issues that have been in tens of games this gen, and every single development team out there should now know what not to do - particularly since FUEL has been in the works for four years.

When I'm actually IN the game and racing around, though, it's getting better and better. I'm shaking my head at the missed potential here. The load times... jesus. There's a really fantastic game here trying to get out.

Well I took my PS3 copy back this lunchtime and swapped it for the 360 version., The fact that I can listen to my own tunes on the 360 version is a major factor for free roam. I know I'm going to have to trudge through about 15-20 races and challenges before it opens itself up to me again but having a decent soundtrack should ease me through it.

Slightly off-topic maybe, but I thought all PS3 games had to support custom soundtracks now?

Yeah. I'm sure they can patch some of the niggles out, but I doubt the load times thing will go away.

I don't have a problem with the load times, anyway. The vast majority of my play time is spent driving, it's only ever half or hour or more that I even see one.

Thankfully, the load times don't bother me at all so I'm not worried about that. If they get the multiplayer patched it would be so fun playing races/freeriding with folks from here. Here's hoping it happens pretty quickly.

I wish I could be as zen as you folks who don't mind the load times. Personally, I think they're a tyranny, exacerbated by honking great design mistakes

I don't enter events all that often, as a percentage of play time, so I don't see them that often, really. And when I do, I have good tunes on the custom soundtrack and like to see how my stats are going, so it's okay.

God it's such a shame!

the barebones online is so broken, I am so disappointed, the intent, the environment and everything is awesome.

But its so buggy and not the 4 wheeled versions

What a fucking shame

TDU was broken online when released. Completely broken. They fixed it and I see no reason why Fuel's problems won't be addressed. Usually quite quickly when there's a lot of people complaining. I shat out of buying it on Friday and went for a cheap rebuy of GRID. Glad to read so many positive views in here despite the problems.

When Edge used to do a monthly FAQ with a game developer (individual not company), I was amazed how many said that they rarely played games. I guess they just don't play enough games to see common problems and useful/good soloutions.

The game testers may of picked these things up, but will have been told that thier job is: "to hunt for bugs and leave the games design to the 'experts'".

Is it possible to keep the compass up but remove the GPS? The GPS is seriously annoying but I'd like to be able to keep my barings too. And this game seriously need manual gear shift, the number of times I've been hill climbing and it has shifted up a gear when I need it to stick has proved very annoying (it's not like L1 and R1 are being used). And is anyone else on the PS3 version suffering the sound cutting out problems? Or has everyone else got the 360 version?

Nope. Another design decision that makes me scratch my head.

Surely it should be a three-position switch - GPS+Compass on / Compass on / off

I have known many developers where that is true, but not in this case. Edge got it pretty much bang on - eye too long on the bigger picture and left the fundamentals too late*. But then if they hadn't people may not be enjoying the game at all

* as in, 'make something without precedent, and do it in exactly this time frame

Just got this.

It's fun and I think I'm going to like it.

As has been said, it's too dark, the menus look like they're from a PSone game and the graphics aren't exactly amazing. I want faster vehicles ASAP as well. I wont be playing it online just yet, but it looks decent enough.

Also, why put the logo the wrong way round on the spine? Ridiculous!

That logo thing is annoying me far, far more than it should. It's the only game I've got that's that way round!

Also, I upped the brightness to just over half in the menus. Night is still dark and dangerous, as it should be, but not stupidly so.

Bought it yesterday along with Red Faction. The first hour was pretty frustrating, but the sheer scale (It's ridiculous) kept me playing. After I unlocked Tsunami Reef, I was totally sold. I has that just-a-bit-more thing going for it. I kept telling myself: Enough of this, it's time for Red Faction ,but I just had to scale that next hill. Tonight,I'll be off exploring, but I'm putting on my own damn music. :)

I'm getting REALLY fucked off with this game at the moment. It just keeps on crashing.

Was driving last night, and got a message, so i opened up the Dashboard, and read it. Went back to the game, none of the buttons would respond. Had to reset the machine.

Did a race, won it, got to the results screen, controls stopped responding, game didn't save, reset console.

Driving across the map, game randomly freezes, reset console.

Racing up near dry rigs. Car sinks into ground, game freezes, reset console.

Free-riding with friends online, then every one vanishes, we can stil talk, but nobody can see anyone.

This game needs a patch NOW. It's really fucking me off :)

I haven't had any problems (360 version) and am really enjoying gradually unlocking the challenges or bombing across the map with some good tunes on :).

The loading times are a pain in the hoop though!

I haven't had a single crash in nearly 20 hours of gameplay. The game has its problems but I haven't found anything related to bugs or crashes. Could it be your xbox at all ?

As for the game I'm just loving it more and more, it's been a bit of slow start but it's one of the finest racing games I've played in ages. Absolutely love it.
