Official Mixed Martial Arts Thread

Couldn't find a thread for this, and wondered how many people on here are big on UFC or MMA in general.

Also what people think of the news that Randy Couture is coming back to fight Brock Lesnar in a title fight in November? Personally I think it's gonna be a tough fight for Lesnar, but due to his size and strength, Randy could really struggle to get any advantage on him. They should have let Lesnar get another fight under his belt first though before having him fight Couture. Plus surely Couture should have faced Noguera to detrime the true HW Champion first.

Other news is that Kimbo Slice is to face Ken Shamrock sometime in the near future. I can't understand why Shamrock is still trying considering he's lost his last 4 fights and got KO'd in his last fight in the 1st round. Even though Kimbo isn't an experiance MMA fighter, he's still got a huge ammount of strength and power in those arms. Shamrock needs to give it up imo, he's dragging his own name through the mud.

Any other chat\news, feel free to post.

Anyone going to any UFC event soon? I'll be heading to Birmingham for UFC 89.

I was there went Gonzga knocked Cro Sops head off, it was insane, everyone went mental. The reception Bisping got that night was nuts too, I fully expect him to get the same reaction in October in Birmingham.

Current Champions of UFC

Heavyweight - Randy Couturz, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (Interim)

Light Heavyweight - Forrest Griffin

Middleweight - Anderson Silva

Welterweight - Georges St. Pierre

Lightweight - BJ Penn

Brock Lesnar is a two-time NJCAA All-American, two-time NCAA All-American, two-time Big Ten Champion, and the 2000 NCAA heavyweight champion with a record of 106-5 overall in four years of college. He then wenton to be a Pro Wrestler in the WWE (WWF), he was a massive name when he was there, one of my favoutires. Left there after a few years to do American Football, but didn't succeed and then after floating around for a bit, he starting MMA training, had one match in K1 and was eventually signed to UFC. He lost his first UFC fight but only due to a rookie mistake, he was all over Mir but left his legs open and got caught in an angle lock. He then faced Heath Herring who he beat. Lesnar has a MMA record of 2-1. This is him, he's an animal

The card this weekend looks decent. Liddell vs Evans and Franklyn vs Hammill both interesting fights between [sort-of] aging UFC stars and Ultimate Fighter alumni. The undercard has Dan Henderson, Karo Parisyan and Nate Marquardt on it too so should be fun show.

Brock vs Couture should be entertaining and will draw huge PPV numbers in the US. Sadly I reckon it would draw more than Couture vs Fedor would as well. Thats the fight that really should be being made though.

Kimbo is a joke. I actually give Ken Shamrock a chance at beating him even with how shit he is nowadays.

I used to watch UFC every week when I was at Uni, it's the only thing I used to watch on Sky. I watched Mirco Cro Cop get absolutely knocked out by a head kick. It was absolutely epic.

I was there, it was absolutely awesome, just so unexpected.

Yeah, seen him fight a couple of times now and although the fights were never great he gets an incredible reception. Might be worth making this the 'Official MMA Thread' or some shit like that as they usually sink pretty quickly.

Lesnar/Couture will be pretty interesting if only because Lesnar has got to be the biggest fighter Randy has ever fought who also has some decent wrestling skills. I still expect him to win as Lesnar just doesn't have the experience. Hopefully Couture will then go on to fight Fedor.

I'm looking forward to seeing who Silva fights over the next year or so as he can pretty much fight who he wants and in whatever weight class at the moment. I'd love to see him take on (and most likely beat) Liddel, or even step up and fight some of the heavyweights. The last fighter to actually have a good fight against Fedor was Matt Lindland after all!

Yeah I'm really looking forward to Silva in the Light Heightweight, I'm pretty sure he'll do well. Be good too see him fight against the like of Lidell, Jackson and Griffin.

Can't wait for the BJ Penn\GSP match either, that'll no doubt be one hell of a fight

So what's the story behind UFC, is it all real? What's not allowed?

I saw Kimbo Slice on youtube once. Scary man. He needs to become a vigilante or something.

From Wikipdeia (pretty much explains it)

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is a U.S.-based mixed martial arts (MMA) organization, currently recognized as the largest MMA promotion in the world.[2] The UFC is owned and operated by Zuffa, LLC, headquarted in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The UFC began as a single-event tournament to find the world's best fighters irrespective of their style, and was based upon Brazilian vale tudo fighting. Although there were a few limited number of rules, fighting in the UFC was marketed as no holds barred, and contests were often violent and brutal. Early UFC fights were less sport than spectacle, which led to accusations of brutality and "human cock fighting" by Senator John McCain and others.[3] Political pressures eventually led the UFC into the underground, as pay-per-view providers nixed UFC programming, nearly extinguishing the UFC's public visibility.

As political pressure mounted, the UFC reformed itself, slowly embracing stricter rules, becoming sanctioned by state athletic commissions, and marketing itself as a legitimate sporting event. Dropping the no holds barred label and carrying the banner of mixed martial arts, the UFC has emerged from its political isolation to become more socially acceptable, regaining its position in pay-per-view television.

With a cable television deal and expansion into Canada, Europe and new markets within the United States, the UFC is currently undergoing a remarkable surge in popularity, along with greater mainstream media coverage. UFC programming can now be seen on Spike in the United States and Canada, as well as in 34 other countries worldwide.

There are other companies around the word, but the only other good promotion is K1. Pride used to be around but UFC bought it out. All other promotions are pretty lasckluster.

Basically UFC could be seen as the best of the best MMA fighters.

Anderson Silva has cleared the UFC middleweight division out. Unless they bring in Lindland or Robbie Lawler theres not much else he can do at middle. If Bisping gets past Leben they could sacrifice him to Silva as a PPV main over here i suppose. Theres quite a few huge fights he could have as PPV mains against the Light Heavys vs Liddell, Vanderlai, Griffin Rampage etc.

Yeah Dream is decent and is pretty much like the old Pride. Big crazy shows, same ring announcer and refs, the crazy woman who screams the fighters names, similar ring girls and Bas on commentary. Plus shows that have a million fights and run for about 5 hours.

Yeah, my brother went to see Cage Rage just over a year ago and said he got really bored cause they had like 16 fights on the card. To be fair I havn't watch much outside the UFC, I've seen bits of other stuff but from what I've seen I'm not impressed. A lot of the time all I saw was just two hard guys throwing punching widely, no other techniques or stlyes used.

I've been to a few Cage Rage events. There pretty fucking shambolic tbh. They are the biggest European MMA organization sadly. Alot of the guys they book are former bouncer types lacking skills and you end up with alot of shitty brawls between fat bastards.

I've been to tons of boxing events over the years but never have I seen a crowd as moody as the Cage Rage ones. Its just full of drug dealers and cockney gangster types. There was almost a full scale riot at the first one i went to and almost non stop fights going of all over the place. Its run by a idiotic Dave Courtney wannabe too.

I'll have to check out some of the DREAM events.

As Orion has said the Cage Rage events are pretty ropey. The UFC events i've been to have all been fairly jovial with a good mix of people. Cage Rage is the complete opposite and the atmosphere can become slightly hostile. Saying that a couple of people kicked off at one of the UFC shows we went to, quite amusing in the end. I think Cage rage will start to pick up a bit when the younger generation of fighters start coming through (they already are to some extent) as like Orion says the big fights are generally populated by cockney hardmen or foreign journeymen who would get slaughtered in any other show with a few exceptions.

Although it is an experience going it can be fucking boring with all the waiting and also a fucking long day if you don't live too near them. We went to the first Manchester show not really knowing how many more shows they would have here and we live near Oxford. That was a long mother fucking day.

As someone said Silva doesn't have an awful lot left to do in the middleweight division, and apart from beating Leben (again) or Bisping he is better off fighting at the other weights. If GSP loses his next title defence it wouldn't surprise me if they fought, although other contenders in the light-heavyweight division will probably come first.

Stigweard, when the fuck did Forest step up to light heavy? I thought he was always middle?

What was that massive black guy called who knocked out chuck? I take it he's been defeated?!

I think you might have mixed him up with someone else mate Forrest Griffin has always been a light heavy. Maybe your thinking Rich Franklyn ?

Rampage Jackson as said above was the guy who ko'd Chuck. He lost a close dec to Griffin in a great fight recently in which he lost the belt.

Alot of the most recent UFC's will be on the main torrent sites.

UFC 88 on tonight

* Light Heavyweight Bout: Chuck Liddell vs. Rashad Evans

* Light Heavyweight Bout: Rich Franklin vs. Matt Hamill

* Middeweight Bout: Dan Henderson vs. Rousimar Palhares

* Middleweight Bout: Nate Marquardt vs. Martin Kampmann

* Welterweight Bout: Matt Brown vs. Dong Hyun Kim

Top 3 fights should all be good ones. Looking forward to seeing Matt Hamill again, he had a great fight against Bisping last year, haven't seen him since.
