bit about Dan Hardy and his upcoming book in the Guardian today

https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2017/apr/18/ufc-dan-hardy-last-great-test

Got the book after reading the article. Dan Hardy is a fascinating man, and a very good pundit, so expecting a decent read.

Would be excited to see him in the Octagon one more time, the GSP fight was one of the first that made me really fall for MMA. But feels like it's just been a little too long away.

Doing some admin bits for work and happened on the current UFC Pound-for-Pound rankings... even as a fan of his mystified how McGregor is #2 without a single title defence.

Can't argue DJ at #1, think Joanna Jedrzejczyk should be close to the top 3, certainly top 5 (she's #7).

Anyway, rankings are usually always going to be subjective but just curious as to the metrics behind them.

Why are the men and women mixed together also? they don't do that in tennis, boxing, well anything else.

I actually think that is appropriate - you are taking an already subjective call (is a heavyweight better than a middleweight, the 2 will never fight) so its not that big a leap if you are trying to compare skillsets of fighters who won't meet to chuck the ladies in too

pound for pound lists are already a bit worthless and silly, chucking the ladies in doesn't make them any more so, and further vindicates the UFC as one of the most inclusive sports going.

Pound for pound lists are a useful promotional gambit, and a good way to get more exposure/credibility for excellent fighters who aren't quite the top of the mountain, like an Edgar or Benavidez.

Sure they're pie-in-the-sky, but so is wondering about a 'motivated' BJ Penn, or a MW Shogun. Doesn't make those discussions worthless.

Before it descended into madness, the latest JRE mentioned rumours of Woodley vs Connor UFC 213 iirc. Its been said every fight almost but thats a bad match-up for MacGregor with the power Woodley has, yes he fought Nate Diaz at 170lbs but Tyron is a different kettle of fish.

For reference, here's the UFC's current top 15 P4P rankings. As pretty much everyone has said, they're fairly meaningless and pretty arbitrary, although at least good for a chat over a pint.

1 Demetrious Johnson

2 Conor McGregor

3 Daniel Cormier

4 Jose Aldo

5 Cody Garbrandt

6 Stipe Miocic

7 Joanna Jedrzejczyk

8 Dominick Cruz

9 Tyron Woodley

10 Michael Bisping

11 Amanda Nunes

12 Max Holloway

13 TJ Dillashaw

14 Khabib Nurmagomedov

15 Yoel Romero

Conor at 2 wtf?

I'd have it as

1. Johnson

2. DC (Jones if he wasn't suspended)

3. Jedrzejczyk

4. Stipe

5. Conor

The rest is a cluster fuck.

DC has only lost to Jones so he should be above conor anyway.

Conor's 2-1 in his last 3. I reckon you've got to be on a bigger streak than that to be top 5.

You know, as far as any rigour can be applied to this kind of thing.

Arbitrary interpretation time: to make the list, I think you should've won... 8 out of your last 10 in the UFC. Or not lost to more than 1 person in your last 10.

Some good fights on the Nashville card. Really want Cub to beat big mouth Lobov, he irritates me Lobov for some reason. Pointless nationalism should make me want Stevie Ray to win, but im a fan of Lauzon so aslong as its a good fight in not fussed who wins. OSP needs a win big time, his opponent, Marcos Rogerio De Lima whom i dont really know, missed weight by 5lbs ( 210lb), so fuck him. Iaquinta is back after 2 years out in a probable war with Nightmare Sanchez not sure who'll win but i'll go with Ragin' Al. Dodson by points over Wineland and Jake Ellenbergwr onnl points over Mike Perry. Leites will sub Smiling Sam, and thats enough for now.

Sounding salty, but I really don't get Lobov, think he's lucky he's at SBG with a certain other fighter because his record is fairly uneventful.

Hope Swanson lights him up, he's a far more exciting, main-event-worthy fighter.

Didn't get subbed against Ryan Hall so I think it will be a decision win for Cub. Kavanagh is in Australia so won't be cornering Artem tonight. That's never a good thing for his fighters (i.e. He wasn't in Paddy Holohan's corner when he lost to Chris Kelades).

Don't worry Lobov has zero chance. The guy has a 65" reach and likes to stand - For perspective Mighty Mouse has a 67" reach and cub 77".

It's going to be like watching Ken Shamrock fight.

isn't Lobov just the MMA equivalent of that bloke who was briefly famous solely for hanging round and being mates with Robbie Williams (but absolutely wasn't his boyfriend at the time), Jonathan Wilkes ?

Artem 'The wilkes' Lobov.

Sounds about right.

Some really good fights and some nasty/awesome KOs.

Mike Perry might be a wanker according to some, but that was a gorgeous elbow KO on Ellenberger who will be Bellator bound sooner rather than later i think. As Diego Sancez should be to, or retiring Iaquinta put him down and out hard. Ray/Lauzon was a tough fight and Ray did well to survive round 1. The elbows he landed from Joes guard in the 2nd were audible on the microphone and were slightly nauseating. Stoke Cub won and Artems stock will rise after a solid performance for a loss, ibhope Cub gets a title fight but he'll probably be waiting awhile.
