Yeah, I did like the relaxing music and some of the boss patterns were interesting. It's hard to know what's intentional and what's just jank in some of the later stages. It might not be totally unsalvageable.

Like you say, it's cheap enough to keep. Getting caught on the red brick on the last stage and losing all my lives was a bit of a "get out of my life!" moment for me and I cut my losses :D

That's an interesting development!

I'm guessing this doesn't affect anything that M2 are doing.

Steam pages are up for zero wing and out zone already.

Hopefully these "bitwave games" lads know what they're doing.

Where the hell is the console (specifically switch) version of Outzone?!

I need this in my living room.... and on the bog.... and on the plane.

M2, for good and ill, don't tend to rush things, and they seem to be doing the toaplan catalogue in chronological order, so it'll arrive eventually - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toaplan#Developed

Is a steam deck or a similar portable pc an option? You could emulate the game now on one of those.

A lot of people hack their switches or other portable console and turn them into emulation machines as well.

That might be an option if you've got an old vita lying around or something.

I do have an unhacked hackable switch sat as a spare since I got my oled model, but having done mame on phablets in the past not keen on a homebrew solution to scratch this itch.

I'm putting some proper time into Mushihimesama for the first time and I have some observations:

  • I'm playing the most vanilla version of 1.5 and there doesn't seem to be much to the scoring other than "kill everything, collect the amber", is that right? I see the wikis mention talk of a gem counter but either I've customised it out of the UI and can't find it again(!) or it's another variant of the game. It's not a problem or a negative, just oddly... pedestrian.
  • It's amazing how refreshing it is to play a shooter without spacecraft and all thon military motifs from time to time. I've been on an Aleste and DoDonPachi kick lately.
  • Stage 3 - fucking hell. That's a "fucking hell" as in "I'm playing something so wonderfully epic here that I'm so glad I got to experience it without being forewarned." The whole stage is like a pursuit of one massive insect enemy with bits breaking off, numerous patterns and all sorts. Magical, hypnotic and spectacular. And I'm only halfway!

yeah it's probably a guide for mushihimesama futari as that is more well known for it's 1.5 version as that was the main version, google will probably throw that in your face, and that one has a gem counter.

1.5 is amazing! That's always been my favourite mode to play.
It's all about playing aggressively and killing the enemies close up so that they drop more amber.
The rank will tick up the more amber you collect and the bullets will get faster.
That's pretty much it, very simple scoring mechanic. It's all about pushing things as hard as you can without dying.

The overall amber counter isn't shown to the player. Just play aggressively and you'll gobble it automatically.

My highest score is 53,619,313, if you want something to beat.
You get 10,000,000 points for each life remaining when you finish so you want to play risky but not toooo risky!

It's a great mode to start in as well because if you're not playing aggressively, and just hanging out down the bottom of the screen and playing for survival, the bullets won't get that fast and you can breeze through.

There's a hidden extend in that big insect midboss on stage 3, if you didn't know. When you get to the top, blow up his pincers on either side first before blowing up the head and an extra life pops out.

Yeah, mushi is great. If you haven't played futari yet you're in for an even bigger treat :D A friend just beat my score on black label so I'll be dipping back into that over the next few days to see if I can return the favour.

Ah! If you play the first "diffculty", which I took to be the default, there is no counter. I just stumbled upon setting it to "Maniac" mode and one duly appeared along with a shitload more bullets. I was already enjoying this game and I wasn't even playing the real game or something. Woo!

Futari isn't on Switch by the look of it so I'll need to dig that out on MAME at some point.

'Original' isn't necessarily an easier mode, just a very different one to 'Maniac'. The former tends to use fewer but faster bullets, feeling a lot like a modernised Toaplan/Seibu game for the most part (at least in 1.0), whereas the latter is pure danmaku. 'Ultra' is danmaku cranked up to 11...

I've never seriously played Maniac mode for score, but if you're interested there are also all sorts of weird 'optimal' tapping methods and autofire settings for it, which I think are detailed here: https://steamcommunity.com/app/377860/discussions/0/496881136915085552/#c496881136915894986

Just tried mushi mode 1.5 which I had heretofore left untouched as the default mode seemed hard enough (could only get about half way through the second level without continues. 1.5 feels a lot easier even though its much busier you start with a couple of drones from the get go and quickly power up to insane firepower so that nothing barring mini/bosses stays on screen for that long.

Makes the game even more fun than it already was.

Legend - thank you. This is way more involved than I'd assumed in that case!

I like the Toaplan/danmaku comparison, that seems spot on. I'm reminded a little of Ikaruga's easy mode which isn't actually easier but almost a different game without the suicide bullets to build meter.

Astroports new joint is out, but it's one of those mech style platform games which I'm not keen on. I always skip those.
It also has to be one of the worst named games ever "Armored Lab Force Vulvehicles"
Aaaah, because they're women? Well, I say women, most of them look like five year olds.
Labia! Vulva!

Ooh, twin stick shooter "Never Awake" is only four weeks away!
Try the demo if you haven't already - https://store.steampowered.com/app/1727180/NeverAwake/

This looks alright Tanitani Wizard . A bit like Demon Throttle (do NOT buy that by the way. I tried it in a switch emulator and it's bobbins. The boss health bars are ludicrous)- https://sparklewing.itch.io/tanitani-wizard

Would have loved to have sat in on the meeting where they opted for 'Armored Lab Force Vulvehicles'. Mainly so I could have averted the catastrophe.

I was at Arc Club Bury on Friday gone and their Candy corridor is pretty sweet (wish I could have smuggled the Batsugun pcb out under my coat).

Of course I ended up playing games I already have and had a decent run through of Progear where I 1 lifed the L3 boss which I’ve never managed before (still haven’t managed to get to the L4 boss in the wild yet) but that little achievement has given me a boost to get back to practicing via Capcom Stadium.

been playing the newer version of space moth again, it's good fun, think i prefer it to their newer game, and got a 1cc! got an achievement for not using the special mode or something, looked up what that was and yeah i'd forgotten all about that mode, which probably helped as i wasn't trying to use it to get points, although it does cancel bullets so it could have helped too i guess. usually i get annoyed playing without a saturn pad but the xbox series pads seem pretty nice for shmups, so that's good.

Star Hunter is really good, but yeah, I think Space Moth Lunar is their best so far as well. It's great.

Not out until next year but this looks like it might be alright. Eigengrau - https://store.steampowered.com/app/1624320/Eigengrau/

I nearly cleared maniac mode in Futari black label today. Got to the last boss. That mode is really good fun.

Yeah, black label maniac. The bosses can be pricks but you get plenty of bombs for the tricky bits.
The scoring is really good fun during the stages, though that all went out the window during the end of level boss fights. I wasn't confident enough not to bomb and lose my counter so I tried to always cash it out before I got there.

dodonpachi dfk/daifukkatsu/resurrection is available on switch on limited run games tomorrow if anyone's interested.

Indeed. I'm personally delighted with how half-arsed the limited edition looks since I'm weak to tat generally.

I picked up a cheap Deathsmiles 1/2 on Switch today. I didn't even know it had received a European release until I saw it, does anyone know if they ever patched the (non) slowdown issues that people complained about with the Japanese version? It didn't have any updates available so I imagine not but I have no frame of reference with the games.

The first hasn't grabbed me after a quick go but I'll persevere. I have a real problem with shooters that have left-and-right mechanics which has denied me enjoyment of some genre fan-favourites in the past. Even Fantasy Zone I find hard to get on with and that only uses one button and is fucking adorable as a bonus. Hmm. Fortunately a copy of Rolling Gunner also turned up today so my weekend of horizontal Switch shmuppage might be redeemed yet. Woo!

yeah i don't know fully, the slowdown accuracy varies between modes, deathsmiles 1 standard mode is supposed to have pretty accurate slowdown though.

This is great. CrossGunr, a pico-8 game by groovy shmup homie, Aktane - https://aktanedev.itch.io/crossgunr

There's a score to beat.

15,205 - https://streamable.com/ors7re

It looks like terarin is making another game with Toshiyuki Takahashi "supervising" called "Star Gagnant" and it's going to be crowdfunded and it looks like it's a switch exclusive - https://ubgoe.com/projects/249

Spent the day at Heart of Gaming in Croydon again. First time I've been there in a couple of years. It's a very healthy arcade with a great variety of genres represented and lots of unusual dedicated cabs, including multiplayer racing cabs all linked up like it's 1993. Sadly, though, I was the only person who touched the four shmups (DOJ BL, Ketsui, Gokujou Parodius and Ikaruga) all day. I actually took the top spot in DOJ BL with a piddly st3 score, and I'm not sure if this means the arcade doesn't save their scores or if I've just kicked London's ass.

So I spent a few hours at the Heart of Gaming at its new location, been a couple of years since I've visited and the new place is huge. Great selection of games and was able to tear myself away from the rhythm games to play some shmups too, though they're all ones I'm terrible at through lack of practice - from memory there's a Ketsui, ESP. Ra. De, DoDonPachi DaiOuJou, and some kind of Parodius.

Sadly there was a fair bit of broken stuff there - the Outrun 2 cab and the Daytona 2 cab had pedal issues, Lethal Enforcers didn't let you shoot towards the right-hand third of the screen so you hit a hard lock about a minute in, one of the guns on Lucky and Wild was broken, the stick on the SFIV machine didn't work...

But I must admit that the DDP DOJ cab was my favourite broken thing of all and I was able to take out the first level even in this state.

Either way I'd still absolutely recommend a trip there, I could have spent hours playing Project Diva, Vampire Savior, Point Blank, Third Strike... they even have a fucking Prop Cycle there now.

Oh man, I went back there in May and couldn't play DOJ or Ketsui because of the same control issue, and found quite a few other cabs had broken start buttons, etc, so it's a real shame if they haven't done any maintenance since then.

Edit: in fact, I encountered all the issues you've mentioned! Esprade had no working C button, either...

That's kind of heartbreaking if it's been that way for months. I don't know why the SFIV was even powered up given that it's completely unplayable, and for things like Daytona 2 you may as well not bother as you couldn't rev high enough to change gear so it was just like going for a quiet Sunday drive. Ketsui was working at least, the only issue I had with that game is how dreadful I am at it.

Going to drop them a message but that is a real shame to hear.

Whew! I always assumed running a proper arcade nowadays would have to be a passion project, so you would never see things like that.

Sounds like the cabinet has been wired like that since they set it up.

I know beggars can't be choosers, but bloody hell. I think that'd be more disappointing than not finding any shmups. Finding one and it being unplayable like that.
