This is great. CrossGunr, a pico-8 game by groovy shmup homie, Aktane - https://aktanedev.itch.io/crossgunr

There's a score to beat.

15,205 - https://streamable.com/ors7re

2,904. This is a lot of fun though, does not mess around at all and instantly goes in to some pretty mean bullet patterns from the off.

This one also very good, but I need to try it with a pad as I'm constantly running in to bullets using the regular shot and it's ever-so-slightly-too-twitchy move speed.

Got about 28k on Storm Vulcan mode which is probably the more enjoyable mode of the two I've tried so far.

There's a focus button as well. Shift I think, if you're using keyboard, slows you down to the same speed as the second shot.

You can hold down both buttons at once and your bomb will deploy automatically when it's ready, that's a good way to play for survival just to get a feel for the layout of the stage at first.

Was getting proper judgement silversword vibes from it. It's been designed so that the limitations of the system really compliment the game and don't hold it back. I was genuinely blown away by the quality of it. Let's just say 99% of the pico-8 games I've tried haven't been on this level.

I think it really shows how being well versed in the genre and understanding the different hidden systems and why they're there, it goes such a long way when you come to making one.

Missed the posts about the Heart of gaming machines being broken.
When I went to Arcade Club Bury, I met the guy who fixes and maintains all their dance and rhythm games and I mentioned the In the Groove 2 machine which was running a PC with custom software.
Long story short; the machine was fucked when they got it, the board was beyond repair, and he says it's a nightmare to work with. I asked him if it was the one HoG used to own and he said yes.

They have a reputation for this it would seem. I think they are mainly invested in running tournaments on consoles these days.

I presume everyone’s first reaction to Radiant Silvergun is “HOW many fire buttons?!”  Christ. I can’t imagine trying to learn this in an arcade.

My initial impressions are amazement at how quickly a credit can disappear at times and how similar Ikaruga was as I’d no idea. The chaining and the early level design is striking in resemblance though.

Radiant Silvergun was one of my most disappointing arcade purchases I ever made. I really don’t get the hype around it and Ikaruga, neither are the sort of shooters I like. Interesting tidbit though, if you put a Radiant Silvergun cart into an ST-V board with a US BIOS you only get 3 shot types 🤔

Is that right? Blimey. I always thought you got all 6 shots by combining the button combinations.

A, B, C, A+B, A+C, B+C, A+B+C (for the sword)?

In the Saturn version, doesn’t one of the modes only use 3 buttons too.

Yep, my understanding is they're only mapped to all 6 buttons on the Saturn pad and the sword on a shoulder button since it has that many buttons available, otherwise you have your 3 core shot types and the other 3 are a mix.

I absolutely love this game, playing on the mode where you can save your weapons for the next go is brilliant.

And let's not forget the searcher weapon that also detects the merrychans / dogs :D

Yeah I feel the same, it lets you play the game with a different mindset. I love the music and the atmosphere and just seeing how far I can go and which weapon to use when. I suspect if you play for score it's much less fun.

It’s just a quirk, you use the combos for the Japanese version, RSG doesn’t take a kick harness so only uses 3 buttons. The US BIOS only lets you use 2 buttons.

Oh weird! Yeah I misunderstood what you meant. Apols.

Absolutely, this and Battle Garegga are my personal favourites and I get my enjoyment from progression not scores, which I know is not the same for everyone.

Same with Ikaruga, didn't bother with the chaining either, just made the most of the risk / reward mechanic of being more powerful against enemies of the opposing colour, getting through the stages and boss fights :)

Yeah, it's a 3-button game with combos for half of the weapons. I've always got on well with its weapon system, and I absolutely detest shmups with too many buttons - it always feels horribly inelegant and cumbersome, completely at odds with the genre. You couldn't pay me to play Caladrius, but RSG is a delight to control once everything has slotted into your muscle memory...

Make sure you switch fellas get cosmodreamer when that comes over as well. It's immense!

This is good fun - CyberBlocker Complete Edition

You can request access to the playtest on the steam page.

I'm enjoying Bullet Hell Monday, it clicked for me the other day that you can suicide when you run out of bombs and get 3 bombs for free, so my scoring got a lot better. Got a "U" rank on everything bar the last stage now. Someone on the leaderboards is getting U++ ranks, but I haven't gotten there yet!

So I can't quite make my mind up about this one:

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1378800/Squad_51_vs_the_Flying_Saucers/

Absolutely amazing production values, but the gameplay is very... straightforward. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, as sometimes a simple blaster can be entertaining. And it does that very well. But definitely feel like it needs more.

Does anyone know how one can get hold of the Rolling Gunner sound track?

A quick Google suggests there’s several sites where you can download it.
Legally purchasing it however, not so sure about that.

edit: there’s a few copies on eBay that ship from Japan. Fairly pricey though…

Haven't played a shmup in anger for a little while for various reasons and have some unfinished business. It is officially close enough to Halloween for it to be Time For Deathsmiles.

I'll be putting in a bit of time to Deathsmiles Black Label to try and pick up the 1cc I never quite managed when I first started playing it, and would invite anyone else in the same situation (or who just fancies a bit of score-chasing) to join in. The goal is to have at least achieved the 1cc by Halloween 2022 and as a sidenote am gunning for having that second score-based extend reliably in the bag too.

Current status is that I can get to the final boss about 50% of the time, I'm avoiding all the extra stages for now, and always forget to use bombs.

Join me in being Bad At Shmups!
