Shmups

I guess i understand what youre saying about getting new players to play properly but i dont believe thats the right way to do it (doubt id play shmups at all if they all took this approach). If the unlocked continues were easy to unlock and the continues were not checkpointed then id be fine with it. Anyway bad times for me if thats the way these games are going :(

ive been playing it a load more today anyway, the actual game is so good, i should be loving it but am half loving it and half super angry at the checkpointing. you can unlock continues by doing the training mission things, the first 2 are tutorials and easy so you can get 3 pretty easy but they are still to checkpoints and not normal continues. The rest seem like they are going to be really hard to unlock, i finished one but didnt get anything because there are score and time goals to beat. Ill have to have a look at practice mode but its unlikely going to be my preferred way of playing.

Is the first ship/pilot the best one? Ive been using the second one because i struggle to get up the screen to lock onto stuff sometimes with the first one. Seems like the wide shot is a bit pointless because im always holding the lockon button anyway.

So far, the first ship feels like the easiest clear for intense. feels like the blue ship lacks a bit of oomph towards the end, though the slower speed does make dodging some patterns a lot easier.

Third character requires lots of point blanking so I'd leave that for now.
I haven't played mild, but the the blue ship might be really good for that if the bosses have lower health. You can at least stay down the bottom of the screen for some of the patterns where that makes sense, and keep out of trouble.

Yeah, it's a legit way to teach yourself a game. Just keep credit feeding until one day you don't need to anymore and get the 1cc.
Hopefully in the practice mode you can just play the full game through and keep continuing, or maybe you can earn credits from practising.

Cheers, ill try the first ship a bit more. Yeah i tried the last ship too, its interesting how its completely different with those charge bomb things instead of the lockon stuff. Practice mode doesnt let you play the whole thing and doesnt unlock credits as far as i can tell. Im going to try and ignore/stop moaning about the checkpoints now!

When I used to play on pad I liked to use right trigger as autoshot, so you're just keeping that held down all the time, and A for focus/lock on with your thumb, and then b for bomb, if that's any help, though I'm guessing you've already tried that.

Managed to beat intense with the blue ship. I really like that ship despite it being less powerful. It feels great. Stupid death at the end, but I beat my score at least.

I've already posted this in the retro section last night, figured it would get a bit more exposure to right crowd in here.

Dinoforce, an unreleased PC Engine game that is finally getting a physical release towards the end of the year, is having the rom released to the public this coming Friday. The best bit is this rom download will be free. Details in the link.

I can't seem to find Gunvein on the eshop, is it not out yet for Switch?

Switch first early next year, and then ps4/xbox later on

Heads up though, we're not sure if Boghog will be handling the ports.

Guy who made Dead End City said he got excited imagining a game where "caveman waifus rode dinosaurs" and was disappointed when he saw the screenshots, so he's gonna make the game he imagined instead :D

I'm a bit behind on my Nintendo Switch gaming - how are we doing with Cave re-releases on it? Stalled I bet - did it get to 5 games?

I’m not sure of the number so far, but Akai Katana is due out next month.

So far we’ve had a Dodonpachi title, Mushihimesama, EspGaluda 2 and the Deathsmiles 1 & 2 pack, and EspRaDe came out in Japan. Not sure if I’ve missed any?

There’s a couple on PS4 (and Xbox) that haven’t been ported over for some strange reason.

edit: I forgot ProGear in that Capcom Arcade Collection

Yeah, that's a good round up, you haven't missed any that I know of.

The second caravan stage in Gunvein is even more fun than the one we got in the demo! Blue ship is the absolute boy!

I do dig the third ship, but it feels a bit too much like cheat mode the way you can just obliterate all the enemies before they get a chance to shoot, and the slippery speed feels like it's been toned down since the demo so it's way more manageable now.

Beat my score in intense by a little bit today as well.

I should be moving onto expert, I think, but intense is proper comfy, I just want to keep playing that.

Revenge from beyond the grave! Reminds me of the martyrdom perk in cod 4 :D Close to getting the 1cc with the third ship now though.

Still using my patented "clench sphincter and flail" technique during that final pattern.

Got a type c clear there later on. Not a great score though. I think I need to let the screen fill with baddies before using my bombs, and I wasn't doing that all the time.

Moving on to expert now. It's loads of fun, feels way more intense.

^ nice one. i saw someones name in the credits?!, pretty cool! :D

been playing it a lot, managed to finish the game with a million retries and a lot of luck from that last cheeckpoint, and got to stage 5 for the first time on one credit. stage 3 boss is where i start to leak deaths.

anyone got any tips for the caravan/missions, i can clear a few but not sure how to score better and need to do it faster - again not sure how to go faster? i mean i can kill the boss faster but i don't even get there in the time required.

also noticed something which i guess i might have missed in the tutorial but you seem to fire more bullets the higher up the screen you are.

Ha! Yeah! That was a nice surprise seeing that when I got the first clear :D It was just for joining in the score competition.

Yeah, only a certain number of player bullets allowed on the screen at once, so like you say, you see your firing rate increase the higher up the screen you get.
It's a way of beckoning the player higher up the screen, encouraging them to play aggressively and teaching them that they'll do more damage quicker the closer they are to enemies.

It's a nice way of making it intuitive and having the player figure it out themselves.

During the caravan stages, the sooner you kill certain waves of enemies, the sooner the next wave turn up, so there isn't a set point in the stage when the boss will appear, it'll just arrive after you've killed all the enemies.

You figure out as you play which enemies you need to chin fast to get the next lot to come quicker, some enemies don't count so much and you don't have to prioritise them, but often they'll be the ones that are filling the screen with bullets so you do need to keep an eye on them as well.

I think a good example of this is the tanks towards the end of the first caravan just before the boss, you have to focus more on the enemies at the top of the screen.

So it's all about just getting familiar with where the enemies are gonna be and just going proper ham and trying to kill them as soon as possible.

Here's my run of the first caravan stage from the demo. I make sure I bomb the bigger bullet sponge enemies to get them out of the way as soon as possible, and you can see I'm using the wide shot sometimes when enemies are spread out over the screen.

Yeah, stage 3 boss is tricksy. Not so bad once you get a handle on it, but yeah, it's a good day if I don't lose a life there.

Some more footage from that "Armed Eats" game.

Reminds me of mr heli aka battle chopper. That was one of the arcade games at concordia, my local swimming baths for a while. I used to love playing that!

I'm top of the pops on all three caravan stages now!

Awesome skillz!

i'm really happy having got all the requirements in 2 of the caravan stages, not really sure i'm getting the hang of it, seems more down to luck, well and staying near the top of the screen, which is why the luck is needed even more. the green/3rd ship caravan/mission is really good fun despite being really hard, i got to the end once but again it seems like more luck than judgement. that one i did spot that you need to kill all the vans that come up from the bottom of the screen to trigger the next lot of enemies.

am getting a little better at the main game though got to the last boss twice now but am still really bad at the last boss.
