Finally got around to playing Crimson Clover: World Ignition. Bought it in the Steam Christmas sale for something daft like 70p and wow, what a superb shooter. Excellent presentation, bastard hard, but really responsive controls and satisfying shooting make it very worthwhile.

I've never played it before, mainly because I generally avoid shmups that feature cute girls instead of space ships (I know, I know...).

I absolutely adored the system in DoDonPachi Resurrection, which is by far my most played. Can anyone explain to me what sets Mushihimesama apart from the rest? It seems to get a ton of praise which I can't really understand from watching videos alone.

This first entry isn't strictly bullet hell either, right? That was the sequel from the looks of things.

I'm still going to buy it today, just want to talk about the game because I have fuckall else to talk about.

both games have 3 modes:

- original - which isn't really bullet hell compared to most of cave's stuff - fewer, faster moving bullets

- maniac - bullet hell

- ultra - like maniac but harder

Thanks.

I managed to fit in a quick go at lunch time, although I only stuck to normal mode for single credit. I did notice some slight delay occasionally prior to some big enemies appearing on the screen. Anyone else experiencing this?

After experiencing true 'tate mode by standing my laptop on its side like a book I figured I'd buy Ikaruga too. For around a fiver why not? It looks slick with the HUD properly set up to native pixel display as well.

For some reason I wasn't able to play at my in-laws' over the weekend. The game kept freezing on the title screen after pressing Start. :(

Now that I'm back home a quick update seemed to fix it. And shit, if this isn't one of the most addictive games I've played recently. It's incredibly moreish. Most of the patterns seem to have pretty obvious safe routes (especially when all the bullets slow down the action. :D ) and the scoring system really goes berserk on Ultra. I need to look at some guides though; the hitbox seems to change around at times, or it's me being shize. Anyway, I'll go back to Normal after I've hulked up on Ultra for a couple more days.

The stage 5 boss seems like a real coin guzzler though, with one of its patterns in particular. I'm bombing my way to safety as it's a complete gamble trying to navigate that mess otherwise.

What's the deal with the Arrange and 1.5 modes?

Oh yeah, this seems to have gone now.

the hitbox shows up when you hold the fire button down - not sure if that's what you're referring to.

the mushihimesama section here would be a good place to start for guides:

arrange and 1.5 are slightly different versions of the game with different scoring and enemy placements maybe. arrange mode for example has an auto bomb where if you get hit it uses all your bombs instead of losing a life.

Thanks, that link is fantastic. Here's what I'm reading through right now: http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?t=9671

That's amazing about the shot system, and explains why some people are getting over 200k counter on their hits.

As if dodging all of the bullets wasn't enough to contend with.

Edit: After the latest update I'm getting some horrible screen tearing which is giving me a headache. I could instantly tell the difference with the shot rates as mentioned in that link, too. Oh well.

ha yeah, i've always sort of ignored the scoring system, all the different auto fire rates seem pretty confusing. the config that gives you an extra powerful shot sounds handy though, i need to learn how to do that.

and it sounds like the mushi update fixed some things and broke some stuff too, still a patch within a week of release is a good sign that the problems will get sorted out.

Indeed. They have a developer who is super active on their board too.

I'm still concentrating on survival and working out how best to evade the shot patterns, however using the slow-tap method on bosses is very nice indeed.

You can set up the auto-fire intervals in the options too. But I have no idea how it works because it's not very descriptive.

another patch for mushi, with a vsync option:

"Additional vsync parameter now available in ini file

File Mushihimesama.ini in the install folder : C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Mushihimesama

Vsync=1 Vsync On

Vsync=0 Vsync Off

If you experience screen tearing, please try to turn it on.

However, turning vsync ON might create some slowdown on Windows 8 or later system."

And now G.Rev's XBLA shoot 'em up Strania: The Stella Machina is on the Steam store with a Nov 26 release date. I loved the dual weapon wielding and gameplay of Strania but it was pretty tricky when you went into stages blind and had to negotiate winding tunnels before finding out that you needed to collect a sideways-firing weapon ten minutes ago. :hmm: Even so, the presentation is nice, the music isn't bad and (on XBLA at least) it has really solid netcode in the online two-player mode, with no game-breaking input lag or slowdown. :) The video provided on the store page also mentions that the Steam release contains the Vower DLC that was released separately on XBLA, which is nice.

DARIUSBURST Chronicle Saviors dated - Nov 30 for PS4 and Vita, Dec 3 for Steam...

Time to get a dual monitor setup? :P

Any info on this? I've only played Darius R on the GBA (a port of the original I think), which was pretty mediocre. But my mate at uni had G-Darius on PSone which was awesome!

Will probably pick it up regardless as I'm desperate for a decent hori after getting my teeth stuck into Gates of Thunder on Wii VC recently.
