Learn the one you've got first! Otherwise you end up being a collector rather than a player. "One thing at a time" has improved my life more than I can say.

If you're looking for more switch recommendations, Black Bird and Dezatopia are good fun.

Abnormal Palm all the way.

Wow, he really tears through bosses once his shots powered up a bit, game feels much more visceral, bodies hitting the floor left, right and centre.

I must have gone reco/normal straight off the bat and just stuck with that. Gonna play palm for a bit tomorrow.

Still scoring better with Reco though, done a little bit better tonight, 16,839,370.

Despite thinking I'd go Ape, I actually switched to Reco, too. He's great for survival because you can basically negate certain boss patterns but his normal shot is a bit harder to control. I found myself blowing stuff up by accident (as blue/green changeover discussion above). I imagine he's the actual best for score if you can get him under control.

Your score tells an interesting picture, there. You got more airborne gems so you've got a route/tactic with more potential there than mine. I got more ground gems (which are worth quite a lot more) which is why I'm just in front. Make sure you scoop them up and you're on to break 17m.

I think you're right, there's definitely a few moments I can think of where I see them and I know they're there, but if I'm using normal shot, I'll often not bother sucking them up because I'm concentrating more on grabbing the ones in the air.

Good advice! I didn't know they were worth more.

Reminds me of when you'd see that one smart lad in the dome at the end of the crystal maze, stooped over, his daft mates flailing their arms around wildly while he's howking big armful's of golden tickets, shovelling them into his bulging half zipped down jacket, going around the edges where they've piled up heavy and the fans haven't been able to lift them.

Yeah, palm might be a bit of a poisoned apple because although bosses cower in fear of that laser, you really do need a decent wide shot with lots of coverage for the last few stages and he might not cut it when you get there.

Cave region free shooters for the 360 are...

Mushihimesama Futari

Espgaluda II Black Label

Muchi Muchi Pork! & Pink Sweets

DoDonPachi SaiDaiOuJou

...everything else was region locked as far as I know. All essential IMO apart from the Muchi / Sweets comp I'd say. If you only get one, make it Futari, although there will be a missing piece of DLC you won't be able to get.

I was hoping that with the PS4 being a big success in Japan that they would end up all being reissued on the machine forcing them being region free

Of course, Cave, nope. I think there have been 3 so far, Ketsui, Dangun Feveron and ESP Ra.De. Psi, all exceptional, but now we are talking PS5, the PS4 window clearly not long enough. Dangun Feveron wasn't produced physical either I think.

Cave made/make some of the greatest arcade shooters, but are the shittest company ever.

Not forgetting Rising Star Games released Dodonpatchi Ressurection, Akai Katana and Deathsmiles for the UK market. Again, if you can only get one, make it Dodonpatchi.

Yeah, the PS3 port is good and possibly the cheapest way to get hold of the game at the moment. It has an "X Arrange" mode that probably differs significantly from the arrange mode in Deathtiny (which I haven't played yet), too.

I sold my 360 copy of SDOJ a few months ago, figuring I hardly ever played it and shouldn't have so many games around just for the sake of having them. Recently I've had the urge to play it again, so I... bought another copy last night for £20-30 more than I sold it for.

As for switch recommendations, the ACA Neo Geo games are must-haves (Blazing Star, Pulstar, Last Resort), Dragon Blaze is one of Psikyo's best (and this port is one of Zerodiv's least iffy), and Psyvariar Delta adds an excellent new mode and a playable character to what was already the most endlessly replayable game ever. Seconding Rolling Gunner and Neko Navy, too - I've only played them on PC but I haven't heard of any issues on the consoles...

I love muchi muchi pork! You don't care for it much? Didn't really get round to playing pink sweets, I'll have to dive into that some time. All I remember about it was that I didn't really know what I was meant to be doing and it seemed really hard!

Awesome work :D Seems you actually didn't need to scoop too many more off the deck, just beasted the point blanking even more instead! This is no cowardice or excuses but my hand is still pretty sore from yesterday so I'll have to watch from the sidelines for a couple of weeks. Back for another push before the end of Sept though, defo. This is fun.

Liquid football!

I promise I'm not making excuses, by the way. It felt all right yesterday, just being upfront that I'm going to ease off to make sure it's actually better. Might just get a bionic one fitted to try and catch that last score.

It's a small price to pay. Runs great in some xenia builds nowadays anyway, and there's the exa version coming too - https://exa.ac/en/2020/03/19/dodonpachisdoj-exalabel/?v=0f177369a3b7

Aggressive play is the closest you'll get to capturing it, and this is a Danmaku shooter with a Rank System.
Defeating enemy, Graze a bullet, Shooting enemy...
All of these active actions lead to Power Up.

You can use the power you've saved to maintain a strong shot and attack it,
You can also use a buster attack to eliminate enemy bullets while blowing them away,
Your play style depends on your ability.

The beauty of the Danmaku and the pleasure of the Shooter is Here!

Looks a bit touhou but also not boring. Might be worth a try!

Also zenodeath coming in a couple of days (4th September). Still not sure about the on foot sections, but fingers crossed it'll feel good.

Crisis Wing trailer

Zenodeath is out and it's fun, has the same sort of system like in Jet Buster, I think.

in this game you kill enemies with your main shot and they drop gems. When you collect a certain amount of gems, it raises the value of the medals which drop out of dead enemies when you kill them with the focus shot.

Getting killed drops the medal value level so if you're playing for score it's a case of grabbing as many gems as you dare before cashing out, going for the medals.

The on foot stages feel decent, I wasn't sure at first but quickly got used to them.

Died on stage 9 on normal difficulty and that's the last one so hopefully that wasn't a fluke and I can get my 1cc if I get a chance tomorrow and move on to expert.

Fun game, I'm really enjoying it so far!

Yay! Managed to finish normal mode of Zenodeath tonight. Got the first clear according to the leaderboards and I'm right at the top! Well chuffed with that.

My only complaint is that the game is too long, though I suppose it's the end of the trilogy and they wanted it to feel epic.

Love the 8 bit style graphics and the muted tones. It really feels like you're playing something from your childhood.

Tried expert and it really ramps things up! I only tried a few stages because I was tired but it looks like it ramps it up a lot, the later parts of the game will be insane.

Really fun game!

Anyone playing anything for the Calice Cup at the moment?

I could have used something like that during the first month of lockdown when I was climbing the walls.
Careful what you wish for, I suppose!

I've got that alltynex trilogy on steam but not really played it yet. How do you rate kamui?

i signed up for it and was playing stuff, enjoyed going back to play stuff like crimzon clover/neko navy/mecha ritz/blue revolver (turns out i'm particularly rubbish at blue revolver). but there was a lot of games to play - messing around getting a game to run full screen, then work out what the buttons and stuff do, then have a few goes, submit a score at the bottom of the leaderboard, and repeat, was getting a bit annoying so i've sort of given up for now. shame as there were some cool games in there, i probably should have just played a small selection of the games. the only one i think i did ok on is neko navy, cleared hard mode which i don't think i've done before, it's mostly really good fun, second stage boss is a bit of a difficulty spike, and the last level is really hard, had 5 lives and gained 2 more during the stage and used them all so it took me 7 lives just to do the last stage!

congrats on the kamui clear! i enjoyed what i played of it but spent a while playing without knowing you can lock onto stuff in the background, well i have played it before and thought i should be able to but the buttons weren't setup right. don't think i got very far in.

edit - does anyone know how you select different routes in mecha ritz? i've played it quite a bit and didn't know about it but apparently there are multiple routes or something.

Yeah Neko Navy is a belter! I kinda wish the comptetion was for the hard mode, though - on normal it's pretty tricky to score big points, but on hard there's gold flying all over the place constantly, making it a lot easier to get onto the Ura route, etc.

Don't feel you have to engage with all of the games in the cup, by the way. I've only submitted about three scores so far, and I think most of the other players are just choosing a handful they're interested in and sticking with those. It's very low-pressure and not just about the best players in the world, thankfully. :p

As for Kamui, it's one of my favourite games! It's essentially a Rayforce clone with a slightly different emphasis (you target the whole screen at once instead of tagging individual enemies, so it's often about finding the best moment to fire rather than chasing groups). It's an easy one to get into, too, as it's so lenient - the bullet-cancelling laser offers a nice crutch or panic button to use while you're learning the stages, without allowing itself to be abused constantly so that you ultimately learn nothing. You also start each life with four shields, and can earn a couple more from shooting down popcorn enemies (I'm not sure if it's random or score-related, but I usually get two or three per run). If you like Rayforce even a little bit I think you'd get a lot out of it!

It's those little bits of text in between stages, you can choose the top or the bottom, for example

thanks! think i miss those due to hammering buttons to skip the story stuff

^ oh nice, think i only just unlocked that mode, haven't tried it yet.

oh and about a week ago but forgot to post, switched to reco and improved mushi 2 scores:

stage 1 - 16'379'050

overall - 168'435'594 (last boss)

thought that might be my highscore but checked and have a slightly higher 1cc score with abnormal palm from 10 years ago or something.
