Far Cry 2

I couldn't find a main thread about Far Cry 2 anywhere. There is only one talking about videos of the map editor from the summer, and various mentions in different threads. Since the game is coming out very soon, I thought it maybe deserved its own thread for discussion.

Far Cry 2 is coming to PC, PS3 and Xbox360 next month, on October 24th for the UK, pretty much in the middle of the wild "Quick release all the games at the same time!" season.

Moving away from the hero, location and sci-fi elements of the first game, Far Cry 2 takes place in a war-torn African nation. The game is a first person shooter of the sandbox variety, allowing you to roam free over 20 square miles. Apparently though it's not just a lot of empty space with a corridor shooter stuck in the middle of it, game and plot progression are meant to be as free form as the traveling around.

The PC version was recently reviewed in PC Gamer UK and they awarded it 94%. Scans from the issue can be seen at this fan site.

A list of Xbox achievements has been released here. The PS3 version supports trophies, so we can expect them to probably be the same as the achievements.

Gametrailers etc has a lot of videos on the game, some of which you can find here.

When I first saw the game I didn't think much of it, but the more I watch the gameplay videos that are scattered about, the more it looks pretty cool to me. Just cruising around, finding little outposts, raiding them for supplies, doing a mission from time to time. And the way the story changes around your buddy system could be really interesting. On the other hand, it might just be more big talk like so many games have done, and I don't like the degrading weapons. Still, I'm probably willing to give this a try this October, alongside Fallout 3 for a big explorin' autumn bonanza :D

It's so easy to miss certain games coming out because of the sheer amount of stuff being released next month. Thanks for the reminder- might be one to look at and research a little for DK26.

I remember enjoying the PC original to the degree where the pink monsters appeared and it all became a bit serious sam.

Taking bets on the main fault why this will be shit, most likely be obvious to everyone except the developers (and bought early reviews).

3/1 starts out sandbox, and ends up completely linear after 2 hours

7/2 classically tragic ubisoft AI, enemies walking backwards up trees

4/1 end up fighting aliens

8/1 stupid technical shit, can't even the the analogue control right and game streams textures right in your face

33/1 to defeat the final boss you must find a special gun, split into 7 parts scattered across these landscapes..

Does this use the Crysis engine? Should be interesting to see how cut down the console versions are if it does.

It doesn't use the Crysis engine no, it uses their own one they've made.

I think out of angels bets, the most likely would be AI or some mad problem with the technical stuff. But I'm still hopeful!

I like the environment visuals and the gameplay certainly sounds promising, but those character models aren't too convincing and I've been burned badly by Ubisoft games in the past so I'll hold off until the 'big game splurge' season is over and pick up / neglect the 360 version based on forum consensus.

Well the developers were asked about the aliens and they stated categorically there would be no aliens in the game at all, it's all going to be in the environment against humans (bloody well better be)

Any problems will probably be technical things such as AI I'm guessing.

won't be able to afford to eat anything else once I've upgraded my PC to play this...

Yeah, it'll almost certainly be better on PC (it looked much nicer when I saw all three versions at Ubidays) but the 360 version's holding up very well so far. The world itself is really quite special - it genuinely marks a change from the norm for the genre, and it looks beautiful.

I'm pleased to hear that and esp from you, you're usually pretty bang on the money with sharing my excitement/cynicism so this is cool.

One thing really confused me though when I first heard about Far Cry 2, is that I thought that Crysis was officially Far Cry 2 in spirit (open jungle, gorgeous, pred abilities). Crytek made the original Far Cry right? Who's making this? Sorry for the ignorance.

Really looking forward to this, I loved the original Far Cry (except for the ending of course). As long I can use the stealth approach most of the time, I'll be happy.

Looks like you can to a certain degree. If you come across an enemy camp, there are usually several entry points, and you can scope out the area beforehand from a distance with a monocular, and it'll mark key points on your map. One of the first ones I captured, I took out two wandering guards, but shooting the second alerted the third, so I just ran in guns blazing to deal with him.

I do enjoy tropical island games, but heard this all before with just about every game someone plays early. Saying that, i finished far cry on the xbox and enjoyed it immensly.

I can see it being 20 quid after a month though, i noticed too human is down to 17.99

Stop ignoring the important question, HoC.

How's the fire? Can you ignite the entire savannah?

I'll let you know when I've experimented with it a bit more. It is possible to set an entire enemy encampment on fire, though. And then leave yourself with no choice but to run through the flames if you want to escape.

May I venture:

2/1 has hardware requirements that make most people not bother with the game

you know what i mean....but big games have hurt me before

Like Half-Life 2 and Bioshock. I remember you saying you hated them.

I really do like the sound of this game. Interests me far more than Crysis ever did, which is weird considering that usually I'm right behind the 'spiritual successors' rather than official sequels when the name/IP rights diverge.

yep, winner...I gave up the pc arms race long ago, my current main pc cost me £100. console only for a good 4 years now.

oh come now, havent you ever bought a game because you "should" like it then been bitterly dissapointed. saying that i just did halo 3 on ledge (finally got round to it) and gta iv before that, both completely fulfilling their hype.
