Far Cry 2

I just play it on normal and find the difficulty just right for that. It can be tough enough in the middle of a firefight and on normal it's the right balance to let you approach a situation any way you want which is what I love about FC2 rather than being forced down a certain route.

I do find on higher difficulties most of my trouble lies with the shonky controls.

The stick scales oddly in that most of the stick travel results in fairly subtle movement, until you get near the edge of the sticks range of motion then it suddenly jumps into overdrive and spins you 180. So you're fine if your targets are in a 90 degree cone in front of you, but if for whatever reason you have to look slightly to one side you're fucked....odds are you won't be able to line up a shot quick enough, and you may well end up looking in totally the wrong direction.

Even outside of combat where there's no threat, it's just bloody annoying.

Agreed, that's the first thing I noticed - that the controls aren't as responsive as most other FPS's.

If I had it my way I'd just copy and paste the Call of Duty controls into all FPS's, as they're pretty much perfect imo.

I'm an hour in and it's great fun so far, and it looks great. And thanks (and +1) for the no music tip - it really notches up the immersion levels.

I'd forgotten it even had music!

And just to clarify, I don't mind heavy controls per se. For this I actually approve; as I said, it means you have to plan more carefully rather than just react. If you get caught out you're in deep shit, as well you should be.

What annoys me is the way the turn speed is scaled. Usually games seem to have a fairly even logarithmic scaling to the stick....the more you move the stick from centre, the more quickly you turn. In FC2 you get the fairly heavy controls across most of the sticks motion, with little variation in response, until you get right near the edge of the sticks movement where your turn speed suddenly ramps up dramatically.

Instead of scaling evenly, it's two tone - very heavy (fine for aiming around in a narrow arc, but no good for movement) or mental spinning, which is hard enough to even look around with. And tweaking sensitivity to mitigate one just further fucks the other.

Really enjoying my time with this now, forgotten how amazing it looks.

Went on a mission earlier to destroy some irrigation equipment which led me down to a heavily guarded plantation. I'd planned for a stealthy approach with silenced MP5, camo suit and dart rifle, along with an IED to dump next to the equipment then sneak out, of course it never quite works out that way. I took out the farthest sentry with my rifle, skirting the compound until I came up in front of rows of crops. I eased into these, dodging from row to row as I listened for footsteps and, more than once, saw an enemy stroll by a few feet away. By now I was feeling pretty pleased with myself as I reached the side of the first greenhouse, I stepped out and looked up into the face of a guard. He had time to yell a warning before, still kneeling, I comedically sprayed him from nuts to neck with the MP5, and foes began to stream from all around.

I got busy with the molatov cocktails and set light to two rows of shrubs, dropping an IED as I retreated up a nearby path. Fortunately the path was a bottleneck so they couldn't flank me, I dodged behind a tree as automatic fire blew chunks from it and peeked out to give some back with the MP5. Silenced weapons don't have the power of regular ones and I only managed to take out two guys before remembering the IED. I let it off and pulled a 'fuck yeah' face as three mercenaries were sent flailing through the air, now with some breathing space I lobbed grenades down to take out the stragglers, by this point the flames were all around and the only place enemy mercs could run was straight into the path of my last clip.

I let the flames die down, gathered up the fallen weapons to give me enough ammo for one more clip, then mopped up any last resistance before blowing the irrigation pumps.

There's more, but I don't want to overstay my anecdotal welcome. :D

I've just restarted this. I'm about two years out of date. I started it about a year and a half ago and just had so much else to play. It's the only game on my shelf I've yet to play properly and so far, I'm impressed. I've not played a FPS for a while (other than Alien vs Predator which was rubbish) and this somehow feels quite different. It's very brown but really does remind me of Africa, especially the roads :)

I hope you're setting fire to stuff. If I ever show anyone this game, first thing I do is set fire to something.

I was playing it the other day, and threw a molotov at an enemy just before he gunned me down. My buddy rescued me, then immediately said something like "better move if you don't want to get burned!" - only for him to get caught in the burning grassland himself. He went down, but I rescued him, netting me an achievement. Appropriately enough, that achievement is called "...into the fire"! :D

I don't remember this game getting anywhere near the bad press that Resi 5 did. You are essentially shooting a lot of black folk in this

I'm going to have a proper long session tonight once the kids go to bed. I've read this thread a lot, music on or music off? I've also picked the Irish character, is there any difference in the game dependant upon who you choose at the beginning?

Well you're not really a 'hero' in the traditional videogame sense in this game, anyway, so it hardly glamorises it in the way RE5 was accused of. You're just another scumbag making money out of conflict, after all.

Oh and Music Off for sure.

You're more likely to beat your wife and gamble your diamonds away.

It was always a silly argument though. Surely by the logic that Resident Evil 5 is bad becuase you shoot black people, Goldeneye is bad since you shoot white people!

I'd forgotten how brutal the second map is, the thing that hurts you most is far fewer gunsmith shops so your weapons jamming in the field becomes a real problem. I've had to resort to a gold AK-47 I've been storing as it never jams, feels like a bit of a cheat though.

I found the second map easier...I think initially it seems harder because you are so familiar with map one, and you're kind of lost, but once you know your way around the second map is quite comforting.

Apart from that bit in the lake where you get targeted by the psychic mortar guy, it's quite peaceful.

I'm playing it again on infamous now too, chose Frank the Irish dude, and was most pleased to find that gave me Qurbani Singh as my main subversive mission bud. That's who I played through as the first time so it's cool to hear him dish out the lines.

RE5 was bad because it had racist depictions of characters - black people literally started chucking spears, Far Cry 2 did not have racist depictions of characters. Solved, also you are not too smart.

  • 3 weeks later...

Just finished this, all round it was great fun. It was a lot lengthier than I anticipated, the southern area seemed to go on twice as long as the north area. It also had that Red Dead Redemption feel to it in that I kept expecting this mission to be the last one, only for another one to appear on the map. Wasn't complaining though!

I've got to say, slightly awkward shooting controls and repetitive missions aside it was tremendous fun and holds up well even today. Playing with headphones the atmosphere was truly intense and is certainly one of it's strong points for me.

I picked it up for £3 second hand from Gamestation, so for anyone on a budget and looking for cheap quality FPS larks I couldn't recommend it highly enough.

My excitement levels at the thought of a Far Cry 3 have just been well and truly heightened. :)
