In some ways it's good because he has an innocence or unknowingness about the subject, but that also means he can't get as close as someone with better person skills would, and open up for better interactions and stuff

 

It's odd because you look at some of his older stuff in the 90s/early 00's and he's more relaxed, more "into" stuff, fun (kinda) and open to things and it seems he's kinda retreated back into his shell a  bit idk? Dont wanna seem too harsh, i have been critical of him before and it's usually directed at him not his work... so that.. makes me a good person?

 

Whatever, looking forward to the next one. I quite like the cringe element to it he sometimes brings, but also hate it yknow. I do appreciate how him being seemingly stoic all the time makes for an interesting comparison to the more outlandish and varied characters we see in the series

Who would you say that is then?

 

Some of these people are so damaged or vulnerable, I imagine as an interviewer you have to let them come to you emotionally. As soon as they feel like they're in therapy or someone is probing they probably stop answering the phone and you've lost them from your film.

During the part where the boy had been murdered and his mother was crying on the pavement I thought there was no way he'd be able to approach the mother. Who else has the right personality to get close to someone pretty much at the moment they've been told their son is dead, and is lying in full sight in front of them? I think his personality helps a lot more than it hinders him.

Hmm, good point. He gets himself in some right pickles. With the damaged and vulnerable people you mention, his methods are perhaps good, as theyre not judgemental. But for other people, people more 'together', they often voice their annoyance with Louis and he doesnt seem to pick up on it.

 

There are few times Louis genuinely annoys me, such as his old series (maybe few years ago) where he was with a girl, maybe a prostitute or something. Anyway she was very nice, friendly, talkative, open, and she wanted to go around topless. Louis made a huge fuss over this and discredited the woman and kinda shamed her for being topless and kept asking her to put clothes on because it made him uncomfortable. That's why im 50/50 with the bloke.

I didn't see that part, is that a new episode of Dark States? I'm not sure i finished watching episode 2. That's why im playing devils advocate somewhat. It's both good and bad, but honestly I don't think theres many filmmakers like Louis and his interviewing technique is sorta unique and i do appreciate it.

Best episodes of LT? There so many from 90's onwards from multiple seasons and shows, whats everyones FAVOURITE LT?

 

I feel like ive watched alot but i want to watch more! Havent seen the Jimmy Saville one, thatll be fun to watch tomorow.

The way the wife is running a business and trying to appear confident and  happy with her husband banging everyone in the group room with a scuba mask.... that episode never stops.  The girls' complete change of opinion in the closing credits just about sums it all up.

 

Also Lake Palmer getting a Thai bride.  "I love you, I need you, I want you", and the woman replies, "I understand".

Watched a couple more last night, the living with Saville one was creepy to watch. Esepcially with what we know now it's like everything he did had a layer of maliciousness to it. There was a bit where he broke his leg off-cam skiing, and in hospital he personally called in press with cameras, which coincidentally was in paper next day. When he was on the phone to the hospital, he was asking if he can take cameras and Louis round and i think they said no, so you could hear Jimmy saying "remembering how many beds ive got you" and bam-next scene in the hospital. Wow, so humble.

 

It made me feel kinda gross the whole episode and I didnt realise the extent of what Savilles had been accused off till after i googled him. Everything he did was fake and phony and he was preaching happiness and kindness while being a passive agressive psycho pedo two-faced fuck. God damn.

 

Also watched that episode where he lived with those Baur(?) people, self proclaimed racists (some) who live amongst the black people who work for them, but not allowed to live among them. This is the best kind of LT episodes, seeing people who you think only exist in movie parodies. They had like their mega-racist chief leader dude who was like almost threatening Louis and when he did a hand shake really gripped Louis' hand and i was scared for a second that he was gunna just reck shop. Louis cluelessness surely gets him into wacky situatiouns. I kinda like it, cause theres people who really dont take his shit and get riled up and thats pretty fun to watch.

The follow up he did recently to this was some of his best work for years I think, certainly check it out if you haven't already.

Yeah couldnt find that one but i know it exists. iplayer doesnt have a huge selection. Ill try and find it.

 

I saw the black nationalist one, and honestly everytime i see louis interacting with black people i always cringe (at louis' attempt at ...charm?). i dont know whats really in his noggin but he comes across as so aloof and naive its likee agghh stop louis, if thats his game he sould utilize it in situations more necessary. he was just standing around like eerrr ummm like they must think the bbc are real dopes if this is the best reporter they have, struggling to make convo with the nationalist leader in the church. Their costumes were pretty crazy

 

For some reason i dont want to watch the alcohol one, sounds like it would just be a depressing lark . Ill check out the rap one think that was on iplayer.

I can't be the only person that watched that last night? Came across as a group of married people looking for fuck buddies their partners would be ok with. It struck me that none of those other halves were entirely comfortable with this arrangement despite what they might have said. Witness the lady reeling in horror at the prospect of her husband watching her and her fuck monkey getting jiggy with it.

 

Astonishing tv really.

I've seen a couple of other documentaries about Poligamy and there's always a moment where the interviewer is with everyone at once and it all starts to fall apart.  There's always someone who's very obviously hiding what they really feel, and someone in the group that's way more into it than the rest.  It feels as if, however the original plan for a Poliamorous relationship came about, one of the couple is going along with it because they don't want to lose their marriage, while the other is really into it with someone else who's also going along with it because they can't be with that person any other way.  There's always a separation to the arrangement, where the hubby stays at home while the wife is with the other party and you can see the documentary is the first time they all end up in the same room addressing questions that make them face up to the reality of what they are doing.  It would be really interesting to see a follow up documentary a couple of weeks later to see if anything changed. There's loving someone enough to make you want them to be happy, but there's facing up to the misery of knowing the person you love is shagging a bloke with a beard on Wednesdays.  It's like the Swingers episode I referred to in a post last year (above on this page) where that girl from the end credits spends the whole episode explaining how free she is as a woman and how she loves her empowerment, then at the end she's given it all up as she realised all that was happening was blokes were fucking her at parties.

Another difficult episode last night which I thought he did great justice to the subject matter. To a degree, you kind of think yourself fortunate that taking your own life due to a medical condition or terminal illness isn't really an option over here. Therefore, it kind of stifles the options.
