Yeah your right Art, 7.99 for Prime (I think?) then another 7.99 for Mubi via Prime. It all mounts up*

Although there's literally hundreds of hours worth of stuff on vanilla Prime plus the other perks (delivery/kindle unlimited etc).

*Edit- going waaaaay off topic here, but a quick calculation of my subs

Netflix 11.99

Prime 7.99

Tennis vi's Prime 6.99 (currently suspended)

Nowtv 7.99

Google Music 9.99

Disney+ 5.99

Xbox Ultimate 15.99 (?)

That's nigh on £70 per month FFS,  ridiculous! I need to seriously reconsider some of those subs

Mubi have opened up their ‘library’. Hundreds of film that used to be on the service are now available to watch. It’s not everything due to rights issues but there’s a lot of good stuff.

Including my film of the year so far A Portrait of a Lady on Fire.

I"m just seeing the 30-day selection still, on the Apple TV app.

Oh My God!!

Was just having a look through the films and they're streaming some random Japanese films that I watched on flights to / from Japan back in 2010 & 2013 which I've never been able to find on Blu-ray with English subs.

Awesome!!

Apparently it’s web only for the moment, apps to follow. No time scale given.

Seems a bit of a PR fail, really. But then I suppose there’s a lot of work required to implement it.

I know the team at Mubi.  They are titanic film nerds (that's an expression of scale, not the DiCaprio movie) who are genuinely passionate about what they do and deliver.  It's a tough market but there they are.

That's my concern. I think I have room in my life for another film service as Netflix's selection of oldies and foreign language stuff is a bit lacking, but can't really justify shelling out £15+ to catch a handful of flicks a month.

bfiplayer is £4.99 a month at the mo.

I love Mubi too. You just don't know what you are going to get. Wouldn't recommend if you don't love foreign cinema (though they have a lot of decent classics too) but if you do you'll be in heaven. It has to be said there is some awful arthouse tosh (and some of the most explicit stuff you'll see outside actual pornos!) but there will always be something excellent there. You can pay for a whole year of it at once and it's cheaper.

Yes I have BFI player and I don’t think I can really justify having MUBI too. In an ideal world they would offer an amalgamated service.

Morally questionable, but you can get a years access to Mubi for free with a free trial to Scribd (be sure to cancel that though) https://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/1-year-free-mubi-subscriptionlegal-and-more-via-scribd-perks-3470068

Edit:

It's been removed. Basically, sign up for a trial to Scribd's subscription. Go to Perks and there's a link to Mubi that gives you a code to redeem. There are other services you get free access to. I'm now a Pro member of Peak for 100 years, apparently.

Edit V2:

And don't forget to cancel the Scribd subscription unless you want it!

Well that worked. Thanks. I will give Scribd a go for a month or so as well but initial perusal leads me to believe that there is not bags of stuff on there that I would want. Though all the usual mag subs are on there including Edge.

You can cancel it now (if you haven't already) and still use it for two months.

There’s a slow as molasses but quite lovely Japanese doc on MUBI at the moment called Around the World When You Were My Age, a young filmmaker interviews her dad who zipped around Europe in the seventies in an old car.

He basically narrates his photos for 90% of the film, it’s a real downbeat treat.

How do I sub to this through Amazon? There’s no big ‘SUBSCRIBE’ button on the Prime or shopping app and like a hungry gorilla trying to open a coconut I’m left both bereft and furious at my failure.

Easiest way is to find a movie on their service and when you click through to it there is an option to start the free trial.

Also if you have MUBI check out Ema, it’s a great flick.

I really enjoyed this although I'm not entirely sure what I took away from it. I can't tell if we were meant to be rooting for the main character or not - a lot of what she did in the movie was pretty objectively awful and manipulative yet I've read comments suggesting this is about celebrating female empowerment and similar which I don't think I really agree with. She's a fascinatingly complex character and beautifully acted though.

Yes, I’d agree with all of that. I don’t think you need to take anything away from it though - I think it’s just a study of an interesting character.

Agree with this. I pretty much despised everyone in this, but what an experience.

And the score absolutely canes.

Got Mubi for free but hopeless with following new releases past few years and googling each film is a drag and basically none of them are known to me.

Any recommendations? I've got Annette on the list

Azor was one of my favourite films of last year. Definitely recommended.
