To add to this, you guys with the JP account, you know you can DL the demo for those without a JP account and with an EU HDD don't you?

What you talking 'bout Willis? Are you saying you can download this for me?

Argh oh man the chainsaw guy.

Ok some thoughts.

LOVE

The atmosphere. Oh man it's horrific. It's not scary in a creepy way, more a fearing-for-your-life way. The music is great. Like Resi 4.

Graphics. It looks amazing, screen tearing aside. It's videogamey and basically Resi 4 in HD, and that's what I wanted.

Controls. Seem to be the perfect balance between maddeningly survival horror/awkward, and FPS. Like Resi 4 then.

HATE

Your partner. This could be a game spoiler for me. Having to worry about her health and ammo, keep her alive etc. I absolutely hated this and I don't see it changing. At least you could tell Alex to stay where she was and not get caught up in everything. I don't really want to play through a survival horror game in co-op, and I really really hope there's some way to turn her off. I bet there isn't though.

So it's basically Resi 4 with an annoying partner. I hope the partner thing works out somehow because, like I say, I really hate it.

No, yes.

You use the d-pad for the inventory. You set up what weapons/items you want on each direction out of battle.

Also massively better, the map, which on the right bumper appears at the top right of the screen.

Nothing is done in out of game menus anymore. You can't pause the game and change items or anything. This made the siege even more tense.

I'm trying to imagine giving a shit about an inventory system in a game as incredible as RE4.

What's your beef with that, again?

Mainly that you had to go in there to swap weapons, especially in the middle of battle. This whole 'OMG I'm fighting a huge crowd of evil possessed Spaniards, OH SHIT HE'S RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME!!! Crap no more bullets, let me get this ... hmm .. groan' (put down suitcase, open it, rummage around, swap weapons, close suitcase, put suitcase away) 'TAKE THIS FUCKER! Oh crap there was only 1 shell' (put down suitcase, open it, rummage around, swap weapons, close suitcase, put suitcase away)-thing. It literally took you right out of the action all the time, and it added absolutely nothing of merit.

The inventory was rubbish and having to go to the menu definitely affected the atmosphere for the worse by allowing you to do things whilst the game world stood still. They seem to have fixed it.

Edit - yeah, what Napoleon said.

That's the first thing I thought when I heard about the partner system..I'll wait to try it, but it really has to be pretty much flawless if she's with you for the whole game. Initially thought it was for a section or two. I don't want to babysit/tolerate crappy AI for a minute, let alone the entire campaign.

Please don't let this fuck the game up, Mr Capcom.

Well it seems like the Resi people went to the same Survival Horror Inventory seminar as the Dead Space people!

They'll do a "push the thumbstick down and chris points the way to go next" thingy too, just you bastards wait.

The number one rule about AI partners is that they should be invincible and stay behind you unless told otherwise. Or they should be able to take hits, but only if their survival is not crucial (ie you can patch them up 'for free' after a battle but you lose the benefit of extra firepower while they're down). Most games having you 'escort' a autonomous AI character are terrible, but it can work well, like in the Rainbow Six/Ghost Recon games where you can give your AI partners simple command like 'go there', 'stay put', 'fire' and 'follow'.

So not much hate for Sheva, or whatever her name is, then? Personally I found her really irritating, stealing my kills, grabbing items and just generally getting in the way. Kept thinking she was a zombie too and shooting at her. Aside from that, well, it's just Resi 4 all over again isn't it? Not necessarily a bad thing.

This is the problem. Co-op is all the fashion at the moment, and Capcom seem to have gone all out to accomodate it. In doing so they appear to have balanced the game with the idea that two players will be going through the whole thing. If a human buddy isn't available, the A.I. fills in. I seemed to spend half my time nursing her, healing her, freeing her from attacks, giving her ammo. This may have been due to poor management on my part, standing in the wrong places etc, but whenever she said "I'm outta ammo!" or needed healing or something, I just groaned.

If she dies, the game ends instantly. One time she stood still while the chainsaw guy came up to her and she lost all her health. Game over.

Every time you come across ammo you have to decide whether you'll have it or her. You have to decide who will use which guns. She heals you without asking and then runs out of healers.

All this is from a short play obviously, and I sincerely hope I'm wrong, but this really could ruin the game.

Survival horror, for me, is about being all alone, the sound of your footsteps the only thing you can be sure of. Co-op would be nice as a tacked-on aside, but the main focus?

This is a very negative post, but only because everything else was so good.

You've been doing just this for the last 2 weeks?!

You're completely right of course, but I bet you know what I mean, though. Resi has always been a very lonely game. You against everything. Traditionally, every time someone comes to help, they die quickly, how it should be! Left 4 Dead has a very different focus.

This is my main fear, have the really dropped the ball on the controls?

Nah its just that I was rusty and maybe some other people- I think the controls are fine unless you really thought the cube version one was unplayable for you after playing through the Wii version. The Wii controls bring that extra "oooh" I'm pointing at the screen and shooting and cocking my shotgun and the shotgun noise is coming from the wiimote awesomeness but it didn't redefine the game for me- the cube one was still great.

The new strafe works well and I really like using the RT for shooting. I've played through the demo twice more now and didn't die once, totally have the hang of it and like the controls

Hard to say so soon. I only went through Wii RE4 about 4 months ago, and those controls worked so well (better/more accurate than the GC original) it's going to be hard getting back to using a normal joypad again. I was having a hard time targetting heads. Not noticed any tearing here, although I'm only playing in SD.
