Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

I've been playing Uncharted for quite some time now - at no point have I ever had the concern that I'm a rampant murderer... certainly no worse than any other game.

AND IT'S A HOOT!

I'd give it a bit more thought. I don't see how anyone could miss the weirdness in Drakes character when set against his actions. Drake is apparently fine with creeping around and breaking necks like a heartless special forces bastard. It's actually creepy and weird, precisely because the whole vibe is predicated on him being a normal, witty and charming guy. The game presents him as mentioned by TSH as Rambo and Lara Croft. I really had hoped they would move from pure combat to more general adventure and daring-do. Indiana Jones kills people but that is not gunning down people relentlessly whilst apparently being a super swell guy.

Loving it so far. On Chapter 7. But Borneo was a shitty level. Beautiful to look at but shitty level. Chapter 5 onwards though is stunning to look at.

Yup, just passed that myself. Considering the percentage in my save file the game takes a hell of a time to warm up. The jungle was horrid. It's now back to the 'old values' of the first but dear lord, did they really need to waste so much game up front?

At least it finally managed to make me care again.

This probably just isn't the game for you. Indy kills people because he has to and so does Drake.

He actually refuses to kill the museum guards in Turkey because they're innocent guys doing their job, instad of armed goons who are out for his blood.

Every other enemy in this game wants Drake dead, so it's basically a matter of kill or be killed. What else should he do? Offer them a cup of tea?

And he while he is a nice guy and certainly one of the most charming protagonists in gaming, he's not an ordinary guy. He's an expert thief and adventurer who obviously knows how to handle himself. In the context of the game I don't see what's wrong with breaking the neck of a Serbian war criminal who wants me dead. There really isn't that much difference when compared to Indy. Yes, Drake kills more but that's only arguing statistics. And games are a different medium to games anyway.

Me too I did a

when you light the resin in the torch

Stunning effect

Yeah that was the best bit of the jungle level. It was the first bit which made me think 'ooooooh' which is odd considering how much more elaborate the train bit was. Though the train bit did make me jump a couple of times.

I think Indy would've killed many more people if it was an action game that lasted over 10 hours. Apart from being interactive, games are differently structured and paced.

Well, just my two cents.

I wish I could actually play it right now, because luckily this is one game that is more fun to play than to talk about. :blah:

I agree with you, you just put "And games are a different medium to games anyway."

I imagine I'd find it way more boring if you had to talk your way out of trouble or run off all the time, or just tie people up. Unless the baddies were female then tying them up would be sweet.

Up until Nepal, I thought the train bit and the snow effect were the most stunning scenes, but there is some gorgeous stuff in the jungle as well. And the cut scenes and general animation are just fantastic. They were good in the first as well, but it's stunning how Naughty Dog upped the ante without sacrificing frame rate while also removing the tearing that plagued the first. Cut scenes look a lot better as well.

It's the first PS3 game I witness on my own telly, but it makes every other game in my collection look very dated.

Paging dork knight to the thread :)

Chloe's eyes are my only beef with the game. Thats nit-picking to be honest.

Her other assets though.

Like Drake says at one point: It's a shame you have to sit on that.

:blah:

What after seeing it for the second time? You lot are weird sometimes. ;)

I imagine it's still stunning after seeing it for the tenth time. It's just a gorgeous game and one that really makes my Panny shine. :(

Come on its a bit more impressive 2nd time around. I'd also like to take offense at weird sometimes. All the time dude, all the time

Heh, I didn't find it impressive at all. Found it quite jarring considering how all the other stuff was immediately switched to off. But that's me. The game has been annoying me with little 'niggles' ever since it started. They are slowly moving to the background,

especially now that I've passed the temple and the game seems to have finally decided to be Uncharted again.

In terms of graphics the thing isn't even that amazing; it's approaching a sort of uncanny valley wherein nothing is impressive, just 'normal'. The voice-acting though, dear lord, now that's something. The little quips and banter,

combined with the 'group mentality' at one point

, now THAT is something to get all worked up on. It makes it feel far more alive than any amount of shaders could accomplish.

Awesome stereotype evil guy btw. :blah:

Oh, c'mon. It looks aboslutely astounding. What are you playing it on, a black & white CRT?

They're not even attempting to break the uncanny valley, it's too stylized for that. But the animation, the incredible vistas, the amazing textures, the water and snow effects, the little details that are everywhere, the complete lack of tearing, the smooth framerate, the lighting and shadowing, the insane amount of geometry it pushes... Nothing comes even remotely close, Uncharted 1 included.

When that building came down in Nepal... Fucking hell.

See, that didn't affect me. I just sat there, watched the screen and went, "OK... this part is probably falling but I can't see shit because of the claustrophobic camera."

Sure it's technically accomplished and impressive, it just doesn't add anything to the enjoyment of the game for me. The banter more than makes up for that though. I just don't see the appeal in the graphics with this game. Not that they are a problem. God no. They just don't make me up my personal score for the game.

Putting

Chloe, Elena and Drake in a room for half an hour babbling to each other

would, though. :blah:

To be honest you could just say Nepal full stop. But yes in most games that would have been a cutscene, It's playable.

Absolutely. I loved the whole sequence leading up to that with

the pool and stunning view, the descend by zipline and the heli destroying bits of scenery left and right. And then that scene happens... Stunning. Another bit I really loved was the bit where he ran towards the screen while shooting at the truck behind him. The way he reacted to the truck exploding... Astounding animation. He really reacts to what's going on around him, instead of canned animations being used over and over again.

Seriously, how can you not be impressed by the graphics in this?
