Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

Uncharted was my first ever PS3 game. I bought it because you lot recommended it. I loved it, one of my favourite games ever. The platforming was really lite, as has been said, and there was far too much emphasis on gunfights, which was really repetetive. The thing is, I loved the characters, loved the story (In the context of what it is) and loved the experience of playing it. It was a romp, as Smitty said, but it was an enjoyable romp for me. It was like being a part of an Indy movie or 80's flick.

I put it on again today, I'd completed it on normal first time through so I put it on Hard. Man, it's still really good. If this had come out this week I would still be loving it, it hasn't aged at all in my mind. Well, it was hardly old but you know. The AI actually seems good, I mean, they're pretty agressive but they seek cover and really flank you. Anyway, you've all played it, you know the deal.

So yeah, really looking forward to Uncharted 2

I loved the amount of action in Uncharted and was quite happy that the platforming wasn't exactly complicated. Never got bored of the gunfights once. Not that I'd complain with more puzzles/more complicated platforming but found the mix in the first one pretty sweet.

All I want is smarter AI and no monster shit. Give me those and a fun script like the first game and I'll be very happy.

I've rebought Uncharted for a tenner as it now has trophies compared to when I originally played through it. As gorgeous as it looks I hope the transition from light to dark sections is improved in the sequel. Maybe it was, at that time for me, a poorly calibrated tv but it seemed to go from bright and beautiful to far too dark to see much.

Looking Slick. The enemies this time around don't appear to be bullet sponges anymore, so it looks like the devs have been listening to the community feedback. Lets hope they sort out the inconsistent platforming logic, and use of waves of enemies too.

What's the estimated release date?

They never were.

Ok, they don't take a couple of shots, but any less than that and you threaten to make the whole experience more slight than it is.

Imagine the waves of enemies in Uncharted, but with health that is depleted in a few shots. Urrrgh.

Okay I'm now worried ;)

It sounds like naughty dog have now introduced co-op to this game, which if done exceedingly well and doesn't effect the single player game at all will be okay I guess, but also some kind of competitive multiplayer too :). The lunatics are finally taking over the asylum in that it now seems that every big budget game being made has to tick every frigging box! And reviewers marking down great single player games for lack of co-op or multiplayer are part of the problem.

I don't like this either.

Do you have a link to an article about this?

Uncharted doesn't need multiplayer does it? It's not a shooter, and even if it was it isn't a good shooter. But no, just use lots of resources on multiplayer and lower the quality of the single player. ^_^

Exactly what I was thinking.

Getting a bit pissed off with every game crowbaring in some co-op multiplayer mode (Banjo Kazooie!??). Such a massive waste of time and effort. I'm hoping it's just a phase.

Separate co-op missions and competitive multiplayer mode in the game?

http://www.screwattack.com/HardNews/042209

I can live with that, (if it's true), though putting any sort of effort in to competitive multiplayer is most likely going to be a complete waste of time with a game like Uncharted. The other thing that concerns with having a full co-op single player is the potential effects it could have on the story and the sense of exploration. However, if we're talking completely separate missions (like Splinter Cell?), then I guess that could potentially be decent enough.

.::: And lo! My prophecy in the PS3 thread is already coming true. :)

But as I mentioned there, I wouldn't mind an "Uncharted Fort Boyard" multiplayer obstacle course or something like that. Just an Echoes alike MP-section because it gives another bullet-point on the back of the box seems a bit misguided...

And co-op better not be through the entire single-player (or at least not be an official story-part of it, for some reason only Halo picked up on this).

[edit] Just realised the MP mode might only be there to make DLC development quick and cash-worthy.

The singleplayer will be just that, I'm sure. Do you remember that leaked Uncharted 2 footage from GDC? Co-op wouldn't work even in that small segment due to various handholds falling away once Drake has moved past them, not to mention the floor giving way beneath him right at the end; unless they drastically changed the game during co-operative play it simply wouldn't work.

That said I do think some form of co-op is quite likely given that a multiplayer mode is confirmed. However, I'd imagine it to be more in the Mercenaries/Horde vein as opposed to adventuring with a partner.

There's a trailer here. I'll try to summarise what I've read so far from different places:

Co-op

  • Two- or three-player online.
  • Consists of "three big sections" from the singleplayer but players will move through them differently via teamwork hotspots; giving a player a leg up so they can drop a ladder down, that sort of thing. It sounds a bit like Left4Dead in that the missions are unrelated and non-canonical but will still retain a sense of theatre.
  • Gears of War style bleeding out/revival system; if everyone dies you'll restart at the nearest checkpoint. Enemies can grab you from behind, requiring some assistance to get them off.
  • Primarily combat focused and there's a scoring mechanism. There will be mini-boss enemies of sorts, such as a heavily armoured shotgun toting mercenary or a chaingun wielding maniac. It appears that enemies attack in waves and will keep coming if you hang about too long.

Competitive

  • 10-player matches, five-on-five. Two modes shown so far, team deathmatch and a CTF variant, Plunder; the differentiator of the later is that you can throw the capture item, allowing you to sling it on to rooftops out of pursuing enemy's immediate reach or toss it to a team-mate.
  • Has taken a lot of lessons from CoD4: playlist system that can be updated without the need of a patch, Boosts (Perks, two per character) and some form of exchange system for points earned to unlock new character skins and Boosts — more about this will be revealed at E3, apparently.
  • Gun combat is obviously rather like Gears but the hand-to-hand system from the singleplayer is also present; sneaking up on an enemy will allow you to take them out in one. Climbing is the big difference to other third-person shooters, especially as you can shoot — with your pistol, at least — from any position.
  • All matches are recorded and dumped to your HDD for later viewing; free and follow cameras, can apparently watch with other players at the same time. It seems that there's automatic lip-syncing for voice-chat, too, so I guess that audio must be recorded with the replay data? There will be a website that ties into this as well. Finally someone's copied the best idea from Halo 3!

It certainly all sounds a lot more full-featured than I was expecting. Naughty Dog claim they hired more people to work on the network aspects rather than cannibalising their current staff, so hopefully it won't have a negative impact on the singleplayer; we all know what happened to Resistance 2.

Panic over \o/

Naughty Dog went this route with the co-op because it wasn't prepared to compromise the true single-player adventure that fans of the first Uncharted expect. "The thing is, when we started work on Uncharted 2, we developed the story for the single-player at the start and then we decided to do co-op," says Balestra. "You'll be able to play three big sections of the single-player with different set-ups, so the enemies aren't exactly the same, you might need your friends to progress through the level. We still wanted to not take any shortcuts in the story just to make it work for multiplayer or vice versa - we wanted to make the single-player as good as we can."

Thinking about it, the leaping around + shooting reminds me a little of Action Half-Life.

This sounds pretty cool:

Every multiplayer game (deathmatch, anyway - "we're not sure yet" if it will be supported in co-op, says Balestra) will be recorded to your hard drive. It can be replayed from any player's point of view or from a free camera, and broadcast online to anyone in your party. Characters' lips will even by synced with voice chat, allowing virtual movie directors to act out scenes.

Excellent, glad to hear that the single player aspect still seems to be the main focus. I must admit I thought the multiplayer gameplay videos looked pretty cool. Might have to give that a go*!

* As long as Sony get me my new HDD caddy some time this year.

So, who wants almost 6 minutes of single-player footage?

I can very well see this being my game of the year.

That looks bloody awesome. I loved the first game.

UNcharted 2 looks wayyyyyyyyyyyyy better than queers of war 1.1 and Geow 2. Geow2 looks like a ps2 game vs Uncharted 1 so not to even mention U2. KZ2 is the only game that can rival Uncharted 2 but nothing on that shitbox 360
