So do your old horses just disappear? I take it you can't collect them like cars in GTA.

Also, you can find and break the War Horse in the game without the DLC code, right? I want it now

I can't quite work out the horse controls. I read the manual and followed it. There seems to be 3 modes of movement for the horses. I tend to have tap a one to get into the first another tap to get to the next and can hold the a button to sustain any one of those speeds. The stamina bar for the horse seems a bitcredundant as never have to tire the horse to go into a full on gallop. I prob doing it wrong.

You prick, John Marston. I'd just tamed a magnificent stallion and then almost immediately got "horse jacked". I tried to shoot the bastard off my horse but the fucking lasso was still equipped. Horse FAIL.

Same thing happened to me. I just shot the stallion instead. In the ass. I whistled for that motherfucker to come back, soon as he didn't he was dead to me. Let that be a lesson to all my future horses.

the naughtiness is ace.

hehehe so much fun the 3 of us just pissing about. Stopping being like no wait we'll do a serious mission. BANG. Dave White shot your horses head off and it all starts again. Moment of the evening for me was me & mr hoodedclaw beating up a horse with our fists as you try and nail us with throwing knives. Amazing lols.

They've really missed a trick or two with the multiplayer. Character customisation and persistent nameable posses a must, please

Open up the Muiltplayer menu and visit the Outfitters. You'll need to gain ranks to unlock stuff.

And I keep seeing fools mentioning that there's no Co-op in this game? Wat? Make a posse and go attack Gang hideouts or go hunting and doing the challenges together - how is that not Co-op?

I did read that hitching your horse 'saves it', but I'm not sure if it works properly.

The way I understand, its all about the tempo of the A button (or X I guess, on PS3) presses. So for full speed you tap the A button quite quickly but this will deplete the stamina if done too quick, while slowing it will allow it to recharge. There's a definite sweetspot where you can get good speed without losing the stamina bar. I thought holding A just kept a solid slow speed, or when in a group, matched the speed of who you're following (the bar turns green when this is happening).

Yup, that's true.

All you have to do is get used to the stamina levels of your horse, since each bread has its own.

Ok, time to post some impressions here. Firstly, for me it is GTA-with-horses, the feel and structure of the game is identical, making allowance for the completely different setting - walking out into the street with a posse shooting at something is no different from walking out of a safe house and finding a gang banger going at it round the corner. Having multiple sources of missions and other side missions / collectibles goes back to the earliest GTA games.

There is nothing at all wrong with that but it does bring up one major and one minor irritation. The major one is failing missions for no apparent reason or not understanding the criteria for success (which sometimes amounts to the same thing) - for example, I was supposed to bring some medicine to a woman but I couldn't remember whether it was specific for her and when I found I had some generic medicine already I decided to bring it to her to see if it would do, but as I approached her the second time I just got a mission fail announcement. Weird.

The more minor irritation is the way the various techniques are very briefly introduced but can easily be missed - case in point, I was trying to cheat at poker, pressed y and by the time I had read I was supposed to be doing something with the left stick to maintain an arrow in the purple zone or something, some geezer caught me out and challenged me to a duel and I lost all my winnings from the game thus far.

Other likes and dislikes:

Like - poker and dice games (but would have helped to have had a crib sheet for beginners which can be skipped for the experienced)

- main story missions, especially the ranch based ones, something rather different here

- music

- environments - bright, dusty, empty, just as I imagine it would be in south texas

- so far checkpoints seem sensible and progress is saved at each stage

Dislike - horseshoe throwing - can't get the hang of this at all

- suffering a hit to rep for returning fire, rather than being the perpetrator

- not being able to invert the x axis - I now find I am a double invert

Strangely there seemed to be no tutorial for using deadeye and reading the manual it seems I should have pressed right stick in for this

Five hours went by playing multiplayer last night - it really is a lot of fun when it clicks. At the start of the game I was geting merry hell in Black Water from a well-equipped gang of three guys who'd chase me down on horseback every time I spawned, and with me not knowing to press up on the d-pad to call my steed and with nothing but a lowly pistol it was a tad frustrating. Fishyfish joined the game and I inivited him to form a posse, then we mosied off and defended a fortified town against online interlopers and the Mexican army for a bit, collecting a few better weapons along the way. Mr Monkey joined and we set off clearing out a couple of gang hideouts on our donkeys, looking like the Three Amigos, pausing only to laugh as my mount occasionaly sent me flying. Pretty soon we were all levelled enough to get the heavy repeater rifle and a few other goodies, and set off to the nearest town to get our revenge on the gang that had given us a hiding before.

On the way we spot Pete from here wandering along the road and recruit him to our gang, then notice some guys hiding on the other side of a canyon. I headshot one with my scoped rifle and drop him from his horse. Pete hijacks a stagecoach and blasts the other guy from the top, narrowly avoiding sliding it off the edge of a nearby cliff. Fishyfish shoots both his horses for larks. My gang members unfortunately leave me so I make my way to Armadillo, where I had spotted the three-strong gang hiding out on the map screen. When I arrive they are on the main street shooting up the locals. I take position on a nearby ridge and manage to snipe one of the guys from distance before riding in guns blazing, dropping another with my heavy pistol, then blowing the last off his horse with a with a fire-bomb before finishing him off with a well-placed throwing knife.

I spent the rest of the session trailing that gang across the plains for miles as they legged it out of Armadilo with me in hot persuit, occasionally stopping to take pot shots back at me. I gate-crash a few of their gang hideout attacks taking some of the XP for myself and blasting a few of them in the process. At one point I see them chasing down some poor unfortunate level one player on foot. I take out two of his persuers with buckshot before getting nailed by the third. I respawn and approach the victim on horseback, proposing an alliance. We glare at at each other for an uneasy second, hands on holsters. He doesnt try to shoot so I put away my gun and get closer. Suddenly the swine rushes, grabs me and throws me from my horse, before jumping on and nicking it. I stagger to my feet and shoot him three times in the back of the head as he gallops over the crest of a nearby hill. His body hits the ground with a wack as I reclaim my steed. The pesky varmint.

This may be a totally idiotic question.

How do you capture a bounty alive? I shoot them in the legs but they still fight back and I end up shooting them dead. Assuming I am doing something wrong.

Really? I found once I'd sussed it that I'd win every time. Quite a satisfying game, I like the feeling of momentum in your arm swings.

Just had a go at the Dice game (Liars dice I think?). Great fun! Much better at that than I am at poker. Makes me want to give it a go outside of the game!

Quick question, how do I initiate some sort of mission in free roam? Are the gang hideouts marked? A friend of mine wants to kill some enemies with me before we jump into multiplayer proper.

Yes, the hideouts are marked. You don't have to initiate anything, just go to the hideout.

 I don't think I have a Lasso yet. Either that or I completely ignored part of an early tutorial.

Do all the tutorial missions for Miss Bonnie to get your lasso (she's marked as 'B' on your radar and map) instead of immediately abandoning her after she saved your life and paid your medical bills you ungrateful varmint!

Well. This is great. The tiny tiny bit of multiplayer I had a go at last night with some of your guys was brilliant. Add me to the tag if there's any space left. I'm loosing my internet tonight until I can sort out a new contract with virgin though. Enjoyed just riding around in the free roam much more than doing capture the bag or whatever it's called.

The fast travel is confusing me. Out in the middle of nowhere it makes perfect sense, but if i'm at the farm, and i want to fast travel to the sheriff, i have to bugger off somewhere, set up camp and then fast travel? Cus that is fucking daft.

Or take a stagecoach at said farm. Using a camp to fast travel is for when you're not in a town or settlement.

Myself, I wouldn't think of using fast-travel in this game. Riding around is such a jiy in itself, the world is beautiful, and there's loads to discover and see. I like to take my my time getting anywhere

Like last night in Free Roam with you and me on a Stage Coach shooting bandits and animals on the way to one of the gang hideouts whilst the 'lesser' individuals used Transport ;)
